Like a tattered old teddy bear whose eyes have been lost and replaced by buttons, I discovered my Fisher x-202 amp in my storage where it's been living for over 30 years.

Manufactured in New York in the early sixties, it was state of the art at the time and became the workhorse everyone used for their hi-fi sound systems.

Specifications

Speaker load impedance: 4Ω to 16Ω
Valve complement: 4 x 7189, 2 x 7247, 3 x 12AX7, 3 x 12AT7, 1 x 5AR4

It uses 7591 output tubes for about 30 WPC and a 5AR4 rectifier. There are controls for: Stereo Balance, Treble, Bass, Mode Selector, Low Level, Input Selector, Center Channel Selector, Lo Filter, Hi Filter, Loudness Contour, & Master Volume. Stereo Inputs: Mic, Tape Head, Phono, Tuner, Aux.

  1. You errantly mentioned the output tube as 7591's with 30 watts RMS per channel. The X202B and X202C had the 7591 power pentode output tubes. The original X202 as pictured, had 7189 output tubes. The 7189 is of the el84/6bq5 family. The difference being that the 7189 is a heavier duty, higher output variant resulting from increased plate voltage. The 7189 has 400 volts on the plate as opposed to 300 volts for the el84/6bq5. This squeezes out an additional 3-5 watts per channel out of the amplifier. After purchasing my X202 I bought a pair of Klipsch Tangent 30 loudspeakers because of their 94 db sensitivity. They weren't horrible, but Klipsch speakers never blew my dress up. I own a pair of Vandersteen 2Ce Signatures and believe if or not this amp makes them sing beautifully! I'm not saying I would turn my nose up at more power, but rarely do I need it. The X202 is a much sweeter sounding amplifier than my Fisher 400 receiver with 7868 output tubes wich a similar to 7591's but about 5-7 watts less output. One other major difference between the two that could açcount for the perceived sweetness is that the X202 is tube rectified it uses a 5AR4 rectifier tube. The Fisher 400 utilised a selenium rectifier in the earlier production, and was changed to a much more reliable silicon rectifier in late production models. The first order if business when purchasing any vintage tube gear is replacing the selenium rectifier if so equipped.
