 Sculpture by Bella Feldman

The first group exhibition at the Galleries on 25 (link below) had a remarkable number of attendees as well as favorable online reviews (links below).

In conjunction with the Gray Loft Gallery, the Galleries on 25 is preparing for it's second round of amazing visual, sculptural and installation artists with the following announcement:

You are cordially invited to the
Opening Reception of THREE Exhibitions
at The Orchard / Galleries on 25
Saturday, February 28, 2:00 - 5:00 pm

The Orchard / Galleries on 25  and Gray Loft Gallery
are pleased to present three exhibitions:
  • The Orchard is honored to present a solo retrospective of the 50-year international career of Bella Feldman.  Bella Tabak Feldman (1930–2024) was an American sculptor and installation artist whose work merged steel, glass, and wood into psychologically charged, often surreal forms that probe themes of war, sexuality, vulnerability, and the anxieties of the industrial age. A pioneering woman in sculpture and a Professor Emerita at California College of the Arts in Oakland, she is widely recognized for innovating techniques that combine blown glass with fabricated metal, producing works that are at once physically imposing and emotionally fragile.

  • We present nationally recognized metal sculptor Joseph Slusky  with a selection of recent and past work. He is best known for his whimsical painted metal sculptures made from recycled scrap metal. Influences include metal toys, LA car culture, Constructivism and other twentieth century art movements. The sculptures explore realms of the subconscious and are fossilizations of the imagination. Joe taught drawing and three-dimensional design at the UC Berkeley Architecture Department for thirty-two years.

It began in 1989 as a salon for African American artists known as Colors of Black, organized by artist and professor Marie Johnson Calloway.  This exhibition features 19 artists selected from the Richmond Art Center AOTAD roster, all of whom live and work in the Bay Area.

Art of the African Diaspora opened last weekend at The Gray Loft Gallery; it is the third satellite exhibition the gallery has hosted (link below) for the Richmond Art Center (link below).

Art of the African Diaspora is the longest running event of its kind in the Bay Area. It originated from a salon for African American artists known as Colors of Black that was organized in 1989 by artist and professor Marie Johnson Calloway.

In 1996 artists Jan Hart-Schuyers and Rae Louise Hayward established the exhibition The Art of Living Black at Richmond Art Center. Many of the artists from Colors of Black participated in the inaugural exhibition, which presented the work of emerging and established African American artists.

Over the next twenty-five years the exhibition ensured the increased visibility for African American artists in the Bay Area that Hart-Schuyers and Hayward conceptualized.

The next stage of the events development happened in 2018, when a Steering Committee comprised of participating artists, presented the exhibition. In 2019, the Committee became aware of the necessity to incorporate a broader vision of the African Diaspora and consequently renamed the organization Art of the African Diaspora.

The exhibition will run until March 11, 2023

Closing reception:

Body as Agent: Changing Fashion Art

                 Styrous®

Last night I caught the opening of a new exhibition that features wearable-art at the Richmond Art Center. The exhibition runs from September 12 to November 15, 2015.

Work was shown by many of the original designers from the iconic Art-to-Wear store from the early 70's to the mid 80's, Obiko, Sandra Sakata was the inspiration for the store and encouraged the designer/artists who showed in her store. The Textile Arts Council at the San Francisco De Young Museum is in the process of documenting and conserving work from that period (link to more info on the TAC below).

The exhibition shows wearable art but has added the vibrations of upcycling which enhances the visual vocabulary of artists. In addition, this exhibition of California artists further expands notions of clothing to include works of art with garment forms serving as metaphors for social, political and social issues as found in painting, photography, print making and sculpture.
