On December 22, 1885, American composer, radio commentator, music critic, and author Joseph Deems Taylor was born. Despite minimal musical training he took to music composition. The result was a series of works for orchestra and/or voices. In 1916 he wrote the cantata The Chambered Nautilus, followed by Through the Looking-Glass (for orchestra) in 1918, earning him public praise and recognition. He acquired several students, including composer Mary Watson Weaver.

In 1921 he secured a job as music critic for the New York World, a post he held until 1929. When approached by the Metropolitan Opera to suggest a composer to write a new opera. He put forth his own name, and was accepted, the result being The King's Henchman, with the libretto by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Peter Ibbetson followed in 1929. He was a promoter of classical music throughout his life.
He appeared in the Walt Disney 1940 film Fantasia as the film's Master of Ceremonies, and was instrumental in selecting the musical pieces that were used in the film, including the then-controversial Sacre du Printemps by Igor Stravinsky. That same year, he served the same role as Master of Ceremonies for the classical portion of a Carousel of American Music, a famous concert series held in San Francisco on September 24. The concert had Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Jerome Kern, Hoagy Carmichael, WC Handy, Johnny Mercer, and many more of America's top songwriting talents performing their own compositions.

20,000 vinyl LPs 340: Bette Midler ~ The Devine Ms. M

 ~

Today is the birthday of The Devine Ms. M, Bette Midler who was born December 1, 1945, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Midler released her debut album, The Divine Miss M, on Atlantic Records in December, 1972, which reached Billboard's Top 10 and became a million-selling Platinum-certified album, earning Midler the 1973 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. It featured three hit singles one of which was Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy; it became Midler's first No. 1 Adult Contemporary hit. Bugle Boy became a successful rock cover of the classic swing tune originally introduced and popularized in 1941 by the Andrews Sisters, to whom Midler has repeatedly referred as her idols and inspiration.

Bette Midler, released in 1973 on the Atlantic Records label, was the follow up to Divine Miss. Produced by Arif Mardin and Barry Manilow, The album includes Midler's interpretations of the Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael song, Skylark, the Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill song Surabaya Johnny from Happy End, a three-act musical comedy by Kurt Weill, Elisabeth Hauptmann, and Bertolt Brecht which first opened in Berlin at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm on September 2, 1929, I Shall Be Released by Bob Dylan, In the Mood by Glenn Miller as well as a Phil Spector medley.

Most of the songs on the album are ballads, Skylark, the 1962 torch song, Drinking Again written by Johnny Mercer and Doris Tauber, and my favorite song on the album, Surabaya Johnny by Kurt Weill.

Then, just for yuks, there's the silly little ditty, Optimistic Voices from The Wizard of Oz which is sung when The Gang awakens from the poison the Wicked Witch of the West has sprinkled in a poppy field . . .

The Wizard Of Oz

. . .  which mixes very nicely into Lullaby Of Broadway written by Harry Warren with lyrics by Al Dubin, published in 1935. The lyrics salute the nightlife of Broadway and its denizens, who "don't sleep tight until the dawn."

Another great medley is Uptown, originally recorded by the Crystals in 1962, which blends quite nicely into Da Doo Ron Ron written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector.

Additional recording at A&R Studios, New York, NY, Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, NY, & Kaye Smith Studios, Seattle, Washington.

There are several versions of this album with varying label typeface and matrix suffix. This has the MS suffix on the labels matrix. This version also has the 1973+ Rockefeller Plaza address in the rim text and on the back cover. There are several other pressings with the pre-1973 1843 Broadway address on the label rim text, but all have the Rockefeller Plaza address on the back cover.

Although "PR" is etched in the run-outs on this version, the single 1⅛" press ring is inconsistent with this being a Presswell pressing.

B3a. Thomas McKinney credited in error as songwriter on both sleeve and label, correct songwriters are Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil. Later issues of this release would correct the error.

Kurt Weill song lyrics

~

Oh, show me the way to the next whiskey bar
Oh, don't ask why, oh, don't ask why!
For we must find the next whiskey bar
For if we don't find the whiskey bar
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die
I tell you
I tell you
I tell you we must die!

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say good-bye
We've lost our good old momma
And must have whiskey, oh you know why!

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say good-bye
We've lost our good old momma
And must have whiskey, oh you know why!

Oh, show me the way to the next pretty boy
Oh, don't ask why, oh, don't ask why!

For we must find the next pretty boy
For if we don't find the next pretty boy
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die
I tell you
I tell you
I tell you we must die!

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say good-bye
We've lost our good old momma
And must have boys, oh you know why!

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say good-bye
We've lost our good old momma
And must have boys, oh you know why!

Oh, show me the way to the next little dollar
Oh, don't ask why, oh, don't ask why!
For we must find the next little dollar
For if we don't find the next little dollar
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die
I tell you
I tell you
I tell you we must die!

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say good-bye
We've lost our good old momma
And must have dollars, oh you know why!

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say good-bye
We've lost our good old momma
And must have dollars, oh you know why!

The Bilbao Song
(Kurt Weill / Bert Brecht – English Lyrics by Johnny Mercer)

Recorded by: Chet Atkins; Clusone Trio; Dave Douglas; Eastside Sinfonietta; Gil Evans; Marianne Faithfull; Jacqueline François; Greta Keller; Masabumi Kiluchi; Ute Lemper; Lottie Lenya; Frank Portolese; André Previn; Martha Schlamme; Sextet of Orch. USA; Tethered Moon; Cal Tjader; Julie Wilson, Andy Williams.

That old Bilbao moon, I won't forget it soon
That old Bilbao moon, just like a big balloon
That old Bilbao moon would rise above the dune
While Tony's beach saloon rocked with an old-time tune
We'd sing a song the whole night long and I can still recall
Those were the greatest (those were the greatest)
Those were the greatest (those were the greatest)
Those were the greatest nights of them all

No paint was on the door (no paint was on the door)
The grass grew through the floor (the grass grew through the floor)
Of Tony's two by four (of Tony's two by four)
On the Bilbao shore (on the Bilbao shore)
But there were friends galore (howdy do, howdy do)
And there was beer to pour (chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug)
And moonlight on the shore (and the moon shines above)
That old Bilbao shore (on the shore, not the rug)
We'd sing all night with all our might and I can still recall
Those were the greatest (those were the greatest)
Those were the greatest (those were the greatest)
Those were the greatest nights of them all

That old Bilbao moon, I won't forget it soon
That old Bilbao moon, just like a big balloon
That old Bilbao moon would rise above the dune
While Tony's beach saloon rocked with an old-time tune
We'd sing all night with all our might and I can still recall
Those were the greatest (those were the greatest)
Those were the greatest (those were the greatest)
Those were the greatest nights of them all

(Extra verse not used by Andy Williams)

Those old Bilbao Guys, they loved to harmonize
Who stopped to realize how fast the summer flies
The moon was on the rise, we'd catch the ladies' eyes
And whisper Spanish lies, They never did get wise.

We'd sing the whole night long
And I can still recall
Those were the greatest,
Those were the greatest
Those were the greatest days of them all.

Lost In The Stars

Before Lord God made the sea or the land
He held all the stars in the palm of his hand
And they ran through his fingers like grains of sand
And one little star fell alone

Then the Lord God hunted through the wide night air
For the little dark star on the wind down there
And he stated and promised he'd take special care
So it wouldn't get lost no more

Now, a man don't mind if the stars get dim
And the clouds blow over and darken him
So long as the Lord God's watching over them
Keeping track how it all goes on

But I've been walking through the night and the day
Till my eyes get weary and my head turns gray
And sometimes it seems maybe God's gone away
Forgetting his promise and word he'd say

And we're lost out here in the stars
Little stars, big stars, blowing through the night
And we're lost out here in the stars

Surabaya Johnny

I was young, I was just sixteen then,
when you came up from Burma one day.
And you told me to pack up my suitcase,
and I did, and you took me away.
I said, "Do you work nice and steady,
or do you go sailing and roving out to sea?"
And you said, "I have a job on the railroad,
and baby, how swell it's all gonna be."
You said a lot, Johnny. It was all lies.
You sure had me fooled, right from the start.
I hate you when you laugh at me like that.
Take that pipe out of your mouth, Johnny.

Surabaya Johnny. Is it really the end?
Surabaya Johnny. Will the hurt ever mend?
Surabaya Johnny. Ooh, I burn at your touch.
You got no heart, Johnny, but oh, I love you so much.

Oh, at first you were kind and gentle,
'til I packed up and went off with you.
And it lasted two weeks until one day
you laughed at me and hit me too.
You dragged me all over the city,
up the river and down to the sea.
Now I look at myself in the mirror
and some old woman looks back at me.
You didn't want love, Johnny, you wanted money.
I gave you all I had. You wanted more.
Oh, don't look at me that way.
I'm only trying to talk to you.
Wipe that grin off your face, Johnny.

Surabaya Johnny. Is it really the end?
Surabaya Johnny. Will the pain never mend?
Surabaya Johnny. How I burn at your touch.
You got no heart, Johnny, but oh, I love you so much.

When we met I forgot to ask you
why they called you that funny name,
but in every hotel on the seacoast
I found out, and I loved you all the same.
I'm tired. I'm worn out.
The sea's pounding in my ears.
And I reach out my arms to hold you.
You're not here and who even cares?
You got no heart, Johnny. You're just no good.
You going now? Oh, tell me why.
I love you after all, Johnny, like that very first day.
Don't laugh at me no more, Johnny.

Surabaya Johnny. Is it really the end?
Surabaya Johnny. Will the hurt ever mend?
Surabaya Johnny. Oh, I burn at your touch.
You got no heart, Johnny, but oh, I love you,
I love you, I love you so much.

20,000 Vinyl LPs 136: Frank Sinatra ~ Strangers In the Night 4.11.66

The song, Strangers in the Night, was recorded by Frank Sinatra on April 11, 1966, one month before the rest of the album with the same title. From May 11 to May 16, 1966, Sinatra, recorded the album, Strangers In the Night. Hal Blaine was the drummer on the record and Glen Campbell played rhythm guitar It was issued by Reprise Records on May 30, 1966. It marked Sinatra's return to #1 on the pop album charts.

Sinatra recorded for Columbia Records in the 40's then for Capitol Records until 1960 when he started his own record company, Reprise Records, and after a string of successful albums, he recorded the pensive and nostalgic, September of My Years.

Strangers In the Night was a combination of Broadway show tunes and standards. My favorite from the album is Summer Wind which is a 1965 song, originally released in Germany as Der Sommerwind. It was written by Heinz Meier, a German pianist, songwriter and arranger, with German language lyrics by Hans Bradtke. Johnny Mercer re-wrote the song into English using the same themes as the original, which talked of the changing of the seasons using the Southern European sirocco wind as a metaphor. In America, it was first recorded by Wayne Newton, Bobby Vinton and Perry Como. Heinz Meier, Hans Bradtke, Johnny Mercer) (arranged by Nelson Riddle).

At the Grammy Awards of 1967 Sinatra won two Grammys for this album, including the Record of the Year for the title track, Strangers in the Night, as well as Best Male Vocal Performance for the same song. It became his most commercially successful album.

The song, Strangers in the Night is credited to Bert Kaempfert with English lyrics by Charles Singleton and Eddie Snyder. Kaempfert originally used it under the title Beddy Bye as part of the instrumental score for the movie A Man Could Get Killed. It was initially given to Melina Mercouri, who thought that a man's vocals would suit more to the melody and therefore declined to sing it. There are several disputes about who wrote the song (link below).

It reached #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the Easy Listening chart. The song also reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart.
