On December 22, 1885, American composer, radio commentator, music critic, and author Joseph Deems Taylor was born. Despite minimal musical training he took to music composition. The result was a series of works for orchestra and/or voices. In 1916 he wrote the cantata The Chambered Nautilus, followed by Through the Looking-Glass (for orchestra) in 1918, earning him public praise and recognition. He acquired several students, including composer Mary Watson Weaver.

In 1921 he secured a job as music critic for the New York World, a post he held until 1929. When approached by the Metropolitan Opera to suggest a composer to write a new opera. He put forth his own name, and was accepted, the result being The King's Henchman, with the libretto by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Peter Ibbetson followed in 1929. He was a promoter of classical music throughout his life.
He appeared in the Walt Disney 1940 film Fantasia as the film's Master of Ceremonies, and was instrumental in selecting the musical pieces that were used in the film, including the then-controversial Sacre du Printemps by Igor Stravinsky. That same year, he served the same role as Master of Ceremonies for the classical portion of a Carousel of American Music, a famous concert series held in San Francisco on September 24. The concert had Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Jerome Kern, Hoagy Carmichael, WC Handy, Johnny Mercer, and many more of America's top songwriting talents performing their own compositions.

Modest Mussorgsky ~ Pictures at an Exhibition

 ~
English: The cover of the first edition of Mussorgsky's Picture at the Exhibition (edited by Rimsky-Korsakov).
Русский: Обложка первого издания «Картинок с выставки» М. П. Мусоргского (под редакцией Н. А. Римского-Корсакова).

Deutsch: Das Titelblatt der ersten Ausgabe von Modest Mussorgskis „Bilder einer Ausstellung“ (bearbeitet von Rimski-Korsakoff). Die Aufschrift lautet:

MODESTE MOUSSORGSKY

Today, March 21, is the birthday of Russian composer, librettist, director, and playwright Modest Mussorgsky who was born in 1839. He was one of a group known as "The Five" and an innovator of Russian music in the Romantic period. He strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music.

Modest Mussorgsky
 date & photographer unknown

Many of his works were inspired by Russian folklore, history and other national themes some of which include the opera Boris Godunov, the orchestral tone poem Night on Bald Mountain and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition.

Pictures at an Exhibition is based on paintings in an exhibition at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg by the artist, architect, and designer Viktor Hartmann who with Mussorgsky, was devoted to the cause of an intrinsically Russian art. Each movement of the suite is based on an individual work from that exhibition.

date & photographer unknown

As with most of Mussorgsky's works, Pictures at an Exhibition has a complicated publication history. Although composed very rapidly, during June 1874, the work did not appear in print until 1886, five years after the composer's death, when an edition by the composer's friend and colleague Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was published. This edition, however, was not a completely accurate representation of Mussorgsky's score but presented a revised text that contained a number of errors and misreadings.

In 1922, Maurice Ravel wrote an adaptation for orchestra and it is the most recorded and performed. There have been dozens of interpretations of Pictures by world renown classical music conductors as well as popular musicians over the years.

The suite has inspired covers in a broad range of popular musical styles. The Emerson, Lake & Palmer version incorporated elements of progressive rock, jazz and folk music. An electronic music adaptation by Isao Tomita was done in 1975 and in 2005, Animusic 2 created an amazing animation that included a track entitled Cathedral Pictures, which used only the first Promenade and the final two movements from the suite arranged by Tomita. On the topic of animation, one unforgettable endeavor was the 1940 Walt Disney animation Fantasia which used Night on Bald Mountain. I remember when I was a little kid I loved Fantasia but this segment totally creeped me out!

In 1984 the metal band, Armored Saint, utilised the Great Gate of Kyiv theme as an introduction for the track March of the Saint in the album of the same name. In 1990 a heavy metal arrangement of the entire suite was released by the German band Mekong Delta; In 2002, electronic musician-composer Amon Tobin paraphrased Gnomus for the track Back From Space on his album Out from Out Where. In 2003 guitarist-composer Trevor Rabin released an electric guitar adaptation of the Promenade that was originally intended for the Yes album Big Generator but later included on his compilation album, 90124. The Michael Jackson song HIStory samples a short section of The Great Gate of Kiev.

20,000 vinyl LPs 321: The Magical Music of Walt Disney

 ~
detail photo of album cover by Styrous®

One hundred and twenty years ago today, on December 5, 1901, the most famous cartoon animator in the world, Walt Disney, was born. This is a tribute to Disney who besides being an animator, was an entrepreneur, writer, voice actor, and film producer. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he introduced several developments in the production of cartoons. As a film producer, he holds the record for most Academy Awards earned by an individual, having won 22 Oscars from 59 nominations. He was presented with two Golden Globe Special Achievement Awards and an Emmy Award, among other honors. Several of his films are included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

This is a collection of music from cartoons Disney created. The voice of Mickey Mouse, who appears on the cover of the album, was provided by Disney until 1947.

There are dozens, if not hundreds of great songs from the Disney films; how they managed to choose which ones they did is a miracle to me. The packaging for the set is beautiful. There was also a beautiful book issued at the same time and I wrote about it on the 90rh birthday of Micky Mouse three years ago (link below).

By today's standards there are ethnic issues with many of the films but it was another time, another world and the wonderful music shines through.

To start off, for sheer beauty and hope there is nothing like When You Wish Upon a Star from the film Pinocchio sung by Cliff Edwards as the character, Jiminy Cricket.

For introducing kids to the issues of life, Bambi is chock full of life realizations as when he meets Thumper who says, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." And the tragedy of the death of the mother of Bambi. There is beauty as well, as in the song, Little April Shower which is quietly bouncy and sung by a full chorus.

He's a Tramp, sung by Peggy Lee in Lady & the Tramp, is a smooth and sensual jazz vocal that is Le Jazz Hot! She also sings the exotic Siamese Cat Song.

Once Upon a Dream from the film Sleeping Beauty is sung by opera singers Mary Costa and Bill Shirley. Its lyrics were written by Jack Lawrence and Sammy Fain while the music is adapted by George Bruns. The song's melody is based on the Grande valse villageoise (nicknamed The Garland Waltz), from the 1890 ballet The Sleeping Beauty by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Mary Poppins (1964) had the impossible to forget song, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! It also had the lovely Feed the Birds (although I do hate pigeons) written by Robert B. Sherman with lyrics by his brother Richard M. Sherman. Then there are a couple of dance segments, The Penguin Dance which had no vocal but a lot of silly dancing by Dick Van Dyke with animated Penguins; the other is Step In Time with a gaggle of chimney sweepers.

Pete's Dragon has a lovely song, I love you Too,  the film stars Sean Marshall, Helen Reddy, Jim Dale, Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Jeff Conaway, Shelley Winters, and the voice of Charlie Callas as Elliott.

Happy Birthday, Walt Elias Disney

 ~

Today Walt Disney would have been 119 years old, if he were still alive. He was born on December 5, 1901, at 1249 Tripp Avenue, in the Hermosa neighborhood of Chicago.

I don't think I need to say who or what he did; everyone knows him, Mickey Mouse, irascible Donald Duck, wacky Goofy, adorable Pluto, the Divine Ursula . . .

. . . and all the hundreds of other colorful characters and creatures he and his group created in the span of his life.

Who can forget Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Dumbo and, of course, never to be forgotten, the 1940 film, Fantasia with Mickey and Leopold Stokowski!

He was a genius with a vision but unlike most of us, brought his visions to life in startling and stunningly beautiful ways. There are so many segments of his films that are favorites of mine; Pink Elephants on Parade from Dumbo is one, Ursula transforms Ariel in the Little Mermaid and Alice In Wonderland when she meets the catepillar is another. It's three of many that I wonder who was on what when they were making it (links below).

The Art of Walt Disney ~ Mickey turns 90 years old today

~

Mickey Mouse is 90 years old today; he was born on November 18, 1928. Mickey first appeared in a screen test of the American animated short film, Plane Crazy, directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks but debuted publicly in the short film Steamboat Willie (1928), one of the first sound cartoons. He went on to appear in over 130 films, including The Band Concert (1935), Brave Little Tailor (1938), and Fantasia (1940).

Mickey was in over 130 films, including The Band Concert (1935), Brave Little Tailor (1938), and Fantasia (1940) (link below). Mickey appeared primarily in short films, but also occasionally in feature-length films. Ten of Mickey's cartoons were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, one of which, Lend a Paw, won the award in 1942. In 1978, Mickey became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Beginning in 1930, Mickey has also been featured extensively as a comic strip character. His self-titled newspaper strip, drawn primarily by Floyd Gottfredson, ran for 45 years. Mickey has also appeared in comic books such as Disney Italy's Topolino, MM Mickey Mouse Mystery Magazine, and Wizards of Mickey, and in television series such as The Mickey Mouse Club (1955–1996) and others. He also appears in other media such as video games as well as merchandising and is a meetable character at the Disney parks.

From 1928 onward, Mickey was voiced by Walt Disney (link below) himself, a task in which Disney took great personal pride. However, by 1946, Disney was becoming too busy with running the studio to do regular voice work which meant he could not do Mickey's voice on a regular basis anymore. It is also speculated that his cigarette habit had damaged his voice over the years. After recording the Mickey and the Beanstalk section of Fun and Fancy Free, Mickey's voice was handed over to veteran Disney musician and actor Jimmy MacDonald. MacDonald voiced Mickey in the remainder of the theatrical shorts and for various television and publicity projects up until his retirement in 1977.

Voices of Mickey:
Walt Disney (1928–1966)
Carl W. Stalling (1929)
Clarence Nash (1934)
Jimmy MacDonald (1947–1977)
Wayne Allwine (1977–2009)
Les Perkins (1986–1987)
Bret Iwan (2009–present)
Chris Diamantopoulos (2013–present)

The Mickey Mouse Club was revived from 1977–1979 and 1989–1996 in varying guises and titles. Mickey Mouse himself appeared in every show not only in vintage cartoons originally made for theatrical release but in opening, interstitial, and closing segments made especially for the show. In both the vintage cartoons and new animated segments, Mickey was voiced by his creator Walt Disney.
