Exactly fifty years ago today, on Sunday, October 24, 1971, Pablo Casals conducted the premiere of his Hymn to the United Nations with text by W.H. Auden, in New York City, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the United Nations.
The work is a beautiful, glorious and exuberant paean to the hope of peace in the world by a mixed chorus of what sounds like a bazillion people with full orchestra (link below).
