Kate Smith ~ God Bless America, the Ku Klux Klan & Politics

 ~
God Bless America

On Tuesday, March 24, 1939, God Bless America was recorded by Kate Smith. It is an American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin during World War I in 1918 and revised by him in the run-up to World War II in 1938. The later version was recorded by Smith and became her signature song.

Music critic Jody Rosen says that a 1906 Jewish dialect novelty song, When Mose with His Nose Leads the Band, contains a six-note fragment that is "instantly recognizable as the opening strains of 'God Bless America'". He interprets this as an example of Berlin's "habit of interpolating bits of half-remembered songs into his own numbers." I think that's kind of stretching it but judge for yourself (link  below).

In 1938, with the rise of Adolf Hitler, Berlin, who was Jewish felt it was time to revive it as a "peace song", and it was introduced on an Armistice Day broadcast in 1938, sung by Kate Smith on her radio show. Berlin had made some minor changes; by this time, "to the right" might have been considered a call to the political right, so he substituted "through the night" instead. Woody Guthrie criticized the song, and in 1940 he wrote This Land Is Your Land, originally titled God Blessed America For Me, as a response. Anti-Semitic groups such as the Ku Klux Klan also protested against the song due to its authorship by a Jewish immigrant.

Berlin gave the royalties of the song to The God Bless America Fund for redistribution to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in New York City.

In 1940, God Bless America was the official campaign song for both President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his Republican opponent, Wendell Willkie. At that time, the song represented cultural and religious tolerance (my how times change).

The song was used early in the Civil Rights Movement as well as at labor rallies. During the 1960s counterculture, the song was increasingly used by Christian conservatives in the US to signal their opposition to secular liberalism and to silence dissenters who were speaking in favor of communism or in opposition to the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.

During a live television broadcast on the evening of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, following addresses by then House and Senate leaders, Speaker Dennis Hastert (Republican) and Tom Daschle (Democrat), members of the United States Congress broke out into an apparently spontaneous verse of God Bless America on the steps of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

It has become common for it to be sung at major sport events: the National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, American football and the Indianapolis 500.

It has been recorded by Bing CrosbyConnie FrancisJackie EvanchoLeAnn Rimes, the Violent Femmes (this is a very strange cover) and two versions by Celine DionThe Firesign Theatre did parodies on two of their albums, Waiting for the Electrician or Someone Like Him in 1968 and How Can You Be in Two Places at Once When You're Not Anywhere at All in 1969.

And the 2011 film God Bless America, written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, is a dark comedy that satirizes present-day American values.

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free.
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

God bless America, land that I love.
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with the light from above.

From the mountains to the prairies,
To the oceans white with foam,
God bless America, my home sweet home,
God bless America, my home sweet home.

The Violent Femmes ~ Hallowed Ground lyrics

~
Country Death Song

I had me a wife, I had me some daughters
I tried so hard; I never knew still waters
Nothing to eat and nothing to drink
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think

Well, I'm a-thinkin' and thinkin', 'til there's nothin' I ain't thunk
Breathing in the stink 'til finally I stunk
It was at that time, I swear I lost my mind
I started making plans to kill my own kind
I started making plans to kill my own kind

"Come, little daughter," I said to the youngest one
"Put your coat on, we'll have some fun
We'll go out to mountains, the one to explore."
Her face then lit up, I was standing by the door
Her face then lit up, I was standing by the door

"Come, little daughter, I will carry the lanterns
We'll go out tonight, we'll go to the caverns
We'll go out tonight, we'll go to the caves
Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves
Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves."

I led her to a hole, a deep black well
I said, "Make a wish, make sure and not tell
And close your eyes, dear, and count to seven
You know your papa loves you; good children go to heaven
You know your papa loves you; good children go to heaven."

I gave her a push, I gave her a shove
I pushed with all my might, I pushed with all my love
I threw my child into a bottomless pit
She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit
She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit

Gather round, boys, to this tale that I tell
You wanna know how to take a short trip to Hell?
It's guaranteed to get your own place in Hell
Just take your lovely daughter and push her in the well
Take your lovely daughter and throw her in the well

Don't speak to me of lovers with a broken heart
You wanna know what can really tear you apart?
I'm going out to the barn; will I never stop in pain?
I'm going out to the barn to hang myself in shame

Jesus Walking on the Water

[Verse 1]
Oh my, oh my, oh my
What if it was true?
And oh my, oh my, oh my
Tell me, is it true?
Did he, did he, did he
Die upon that cross?
And did he, did he, did he
Come back across?

[Chorus]
Jesus walking on the water
Sweet Jesus walking in the sky
Sinking sand, took my hand
Raised me up and he brought me up
I can hold my, my, my head high

[Verse 2]
Will I, will I, will I
Be true to my birth?
And will I, will I, will I
Give what I'm worth?
Oh yes sir, yes sir, yes sir
I come when you call
And yes sir, yes sir, yes sir
Jesus, my all-in-all

I Know It's True, but I'm Sorry To Say

Yesterday's a day away
Nothing I could do to make it stay like that
Ain't that a fact

I know it's true, but I'm sorry to say
I just can't handle things this way
I know it's late, but I'd like to stay a while
See you smile

Will you meet me in the morning
With the sun fresh on the dew?
Will you meet me in the afternoon
Made just for me and you?
Will you meet me in the evening
When the night-time starts to crawl?
Will you meet me in the hall?
Will you meet me on the wall?
Will you meet me at all?

One more time, one more time
Shaking up and down my spine
Jump a rope or skip a line or two
What can I do?

One more time, one more time
Color flashing neon signs
Advertising a friend of my distraction
Latest attraction

Oh my body has been punished
Lord, I think I've had enough
Oh my body has been punished
With too much and not enough
Oh my body has been punished
And my mind can no longer bluff
My mind is so unkind
My mind is so unkind
It keeps me crying all the time

I know it's true, but I'm sorry to say
Yesterday's a day away

Hallowed Ground

My soul can't be sold
Shake me cold, shake me cold
That's hallowed ground
That's hallowed ground

My spirit never told
Break my bone, break my bone
That's hallowed ground
That's hallowed ground

That's hallowed ground, yeah yeah
That's hallowed ground
That's hallowed ground, yeah yeah
That's hallowed ground

Do your dirt, make your mark
My heart is a church of scars
That's hallowed ground

Break my skin, crack my skull
My holy land still grows
That's hallowed ground

That's hallowed ground, yeah yeah
That's hallowed ground
That's hallowed ground, yeah yeah
That's hallowed ground

Nothing's sacred, if it's wasted
We'll be safer, buried it alive
But I still taste it
Hate but this won't turn me blind
Won't turn me blind
That's hallowed ground
That's hallowed ground

That's hallowed ground, yeah yeah
That's hallowed ground
That's hallowed ground, yeah yeah
That's hallowed ground

Black Girls

I dig the black girls
Oh so much more than the white girls
I was so pleased to learn they were faster
Can you guess, guess, guess, guess, guess, ooh what I'm after?

Along comes a little faggot white boy
He's look, look, looking for some kind of joy
They come around so queer and quiet
But inside, rebel and riot
Say, I dig the white boys
Oh so much more than the black boys
I was so pleased to learn they're not smarter
Go on, give, give, give, give it to me harder
Harder
Harder, just say
Harder!

You know I love the Lord of hosts
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost
I was so pleased to learn that he's inside me
In my time of trouble he will hide me

I dig the black girls
I dig the black girls
I dig the black girls
I dig the black girls

20,000 vinyl LPs 227: The Violent Femmes ~ Hallowed Ground

 ~

Today, June 7, is the birthday of Gordon Gano a member of the hard to pigeon-hole group, The Violent Femmes. He was born in 1963 in Connecticut to actor parents Norman and Faye Gano.

Gano joined Violent Femmes in Milwaukee in 1981 with bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Victor DeLorenzo. They developed a following thanks to songs such as Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off and Add It Up (all included on their self-titled debut album). The band has experimented with a variety of sounds over the course of its career, such as country and western (Hallowed Ground) and pop-rock (The Blind Leading the Naked). Gano plays guitar, sings and writes most of the band's songs.

I was first snagged by the album front cover artwork which is a photo of a sculpture created by Mary Nohl, the daughter of a Milwaukee attorney, and his wife Emma. After the death of her parents, a sizable inheritance left Nohl the chance to create artworks. She used concrete and found objects such as driftwood, wire and glass to build sculptures, one of which was used for the cover of the album.

Musician John Zorn plays Alto Saxophone and Woodwind on the album. He incorporates diverse styles in his compositions, which he identifies as avant-garde or experimental. Zorn was described by Down Beat as "one of our most important composers".

Country Death Song is a real shit-kickin' country western song that is bouncy, happy and just made for dancing (YouTube link below).

I Hear the Rain starts with an a-cappella duet; is short, only one and a half minutes but it moves like a banshee; with the use of what sounds like a xylophone puts me in mind of a faster version of the British post-punk, Au Pairs song, Tongue in cheek (link below).

My favorite song from the album has to be Jesus Walking on the Water. It's a fast, Appalachia gospel sounding tune that moves with great lyrics and it's lots of fun (link below).

I really love I Know It's True But I'm Sorry To Say. It's a slow ballad that is truly beautiful with insightful lyrics (link below).

Black Girls, my second favorite song (link below), starts out with a very hesitant snare drum then goes into a fast Radar Love by Golden Earring type of beat. John Zorn wails on sax in this song then is joined by a Jew's harp. The song is a great study in dissonance and improvisation with fantastic drumming by Victor DeLorenzo.

It's Gonna Rain is another shit-kicker with a great beat that makes you want to move whether you want to or not, it's irresistible (link below).

During a Violent Femmes hiatus in the late 1980s, Gano formed a gospel-punk group called The Mercy Seat with vocalist Zena Von Heppinstall, bassist Patrice Moran, and drummer Fernando Menendez.
