Today is the birthday of New Wave musician Robert Görl who, with Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López, was a member of the German electropunk/Neue Deutsche Welle band formed in 1978, from Düsseldorf, Germany, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF).

Although this is their third studio album, it is the first one of theirs I heard and it blew me away! Sato Sato kicks it all off and I remember so well my hearing it for the first time! Funny how so many songs have "Remember where I was?" attachments.   
       
 

 
The album was released in 1981 and was the band's first album on Virgin Records. It includes the hit single Der Mussolini. The album was a massive hit in Germany, where it charted for 46 weeks.          

I loved Der Mussolini as well. The deep vocal by Delgado-López is wonderfully sinister and the percussion by Görl is so much fun to watch. For sound, I go with the sax; for motion, I've always enjoyed watching the drummer in a group more than the other members. As opposed to the jerky, erratic movements of the other musicians, the repetitive, graceful and dynamic motions of the drummer is like a dance and a joy to behold.           
 
Giorgio Moroder did a re-mix of the song and the video for it is SO much fun to watch (link below)! You have to pay close attention, though, as the visuals are VERY subtle but brilliant! However, electrifying Delgado-López's vocal waters it down so it's almost sterile and it doesn't have the raw sound of his vocal that I love in the original.         
  



Rote Lippen is a REAL doozy! After figuring out it meant "Red Lips" I was expecting something erotically tinged but I was not ready for this! It is really NASTY sounding! But then the vocal with an almost disgusting guttural clearing of the throat and sinister overtones whirles around you and it becomes the height of romanticism! Punk/New Wave at its best!!!!

i.e Something like "my precious" or "dear".)

Robert Görl was born on June 15, 1955, in Munich, Germany and started his life in an orphanage. At the age of 18, Görl got drum lessons from the jazz musician Freddie Brocksieper. In 1974 he started a classical music education at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg and in 1976 at the University of Graz, also devoting himself to jazz. In 1978, he interrupted his studies, went to London and became interested in punk rock. In the same year, he met Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López in Düsseldorf and formed DAF. Görl also played in other bands such as Der Plan.            
 



In 1984, Robert Görl recorded his first solo album Night Full of Tension (Mute Rec), working with New Wave Diva Annie Lennox.            
 
   


Görl also played drums on the 1981 Eurythmics (Annie Lennox, David Stewart) album, In the Garden.

The album Alles ist gut (all is good) received the German Schallplattenpreis award by the Deutsche Phono-Akademie (The German Phono-Academy), an association of the German recording industry in 1982.     
 
The D.A.F. track Alle Gegen Alle was remade by Laibach in 1994. Der Mussolini was remade by Atrocity in 1997 and by KMFDM in 2006. The Patrik Sampler 2017 novel The Ocean Container makes reference to Greif Nach Den Sternen.

45 RPM 29: Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF) ~ Der Räuber Und Der Prinz

Of all the astonishing New Wave songs that I love, Der Räuber Und Der Prinz, by the German group, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF)  has to be up at the very top of my list.

Räuber is on their very first album, Alles Ist Gut, as well as this 12" 45 RPM single. The song is actually on the "B" side of the single; Der Mussolini is the "A" or featured side, which happens to a lot of really great music.

The tune is moderately fast with a bouncey beat that gives it the feeling of being faster than it really is; you can almost feel the galloping of the men on horses as they travel through the woods. The instrumentation is exquisite with a tinkling, metallic synth, lots of electronic effects and many surprises (link below).

Der Räuber was covered by G.Rag & Die Landlergschwister; it is a faster acoustical version, accordion, tuba, trumpets, etc. and it is a lot of fun to watch as the people dance to it (link below).

Der Räuber Und Der Prinzr is a simple song that tells the tale of a group of robbers who find a prince, lost in the woods, and take his possessions. The prince falls in love with one of his robbers; the gender of both is masculine, as indicated by the article, "der".
