Screamin' Jay Hawkins was an American singer-songwriter, musician, actor, film producer and boxer who was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and wanted to be an opera singer (Hawkins cited Paul Robeson as his musical idol in interviews), also included were Mario Lanza, Enrico Caruso, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie and Charles Brown. When his initial ambitions failed, he began his career as a conventional blues singer and pianist.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins recorded I Put a Spell on You on February 12, 1956. It was co-written with Herb Slotkin, became a classic cult song and was Hawkins' greatest commercial success, reportedly surpassing a million copies in sales, even though it failed to make the Billboard pop or R&B charts.

From Wikipedia:
Hawkins had originally intended to record I Put a Spell on You as "a refined love song, a blues ballad". However, the producer Arnold Maxin "brought in ribs and chicken and got everybody drunk, and we came out with this weird version ... I don't even remember making the record. Before, I was just a normal blues singer. I was just Jay Hawkins. It all sort of just fell in place. I found out I could do more destroying a song and screaming it to death."
The hit brought Hawkins together with Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed who added him to his "Rock and Roll Revue". Up to this time, Hawkins had been a blues performer; emotional, but not wild. Freed suggested a gimmick to capitalize on the "demented" sound of I Put a Spell on You: Hawkins wore a long cape, and appeared onstage by rising out of a coffin in the midst of smoke and fog. The act was a sensation, later bolstered by tusks worn in Hawkins' nose, on-stage snakes and fireworks, a cigarette-smoking skull named "Henry" and, ultimately, Hawkins transforming himself into "the black Vincent Price". This theatrical act was one of the first shock rock performances.

I Put a Spell on You was selected as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. It was also included in Robert Christgau's "Basic Record Library" of 1950s and 1960s recordings—published in Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies (1981)—and ranked No. 313 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

During his career he opened for Fats Domino, Tiny Grimes and the Rolling Stones. This exposure in turn influenced rock acts such as Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, the Cramps, Screaming Lord Sutch, Black Sabbath, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Arthur Brown, Led Zeppelin, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, and Glenn Danzig.

There have been some great covers of the song: Nina Simone, John Fogerty, Annie Lennox, Bryan Ferry, Haley Reinhart, Nick Cave, Tim Curry, The Animals and, of course, Marilyn Manson and Diamanda Galas to name but a few. With the exception of Manson and Galas, most of the covers treat the song seriously; few attempt to duplicate the  over-the-top performance by Hawkins.

Today is the birthday of New Wave musician Robert Görl who, with Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López, was a member of the German electropunk/Neue Deutsche Welle band formed in 1978, from Düsseldorf, Germany, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF).

Although this is their third studio album, it is the first one of theirs I heard and it blew me away! Sato Sato kicks it all off and I remember so well my hearing it for the first time! Funny how so many songs have "Remember where I was?" attachments.

The album was released in 1981 and was the band's first album on Virgin Records. It includes the hit single Der Mussolini. The album was a massive hit in Germany, where it charted for 46 weeks.

I loved Der Mussolini as well. The deep vocal by Delgado-López is wonderfully sinister and the percussion by Görl is so much fun to watch. For sound, I go with the sax; for motion, I've always enjoyed watching the drummer in a group more than the other members. As opposed to the jerky, erratic movements of the other musicians, the repetitive, graceful and dynamic motions of the drummer is like a dance and a joy to behold.

Giorgio Moroder did a re-mix of the song and the video for it is SO much fun to watch (link below)! You have to pay close attention, though, as the visuals are VERY subtle but brilliant! However, electrifying Delgado-López's vocal waters it down so it's almost sterile and it doesn't have the raw sound of his vocal that I love in the original.

Rote Lippen is a REAL doozy! After figuring out it meant "Red Lips" I was expecting something erotically tinged but I was not ready for this! It is really NASTY sounding! But then the vocal with an almost disgusting guttural clearing of the throat and sinister overtones whirles around you and it becomes the height of romanticism! Punk/New Wave at its best!!!!

Dein kleid ist so rot. dein mund ist so rot. mein
Schatz. deine lippen sind so rot. mein schatz
Die ganze welt ist rot fuer mich. ich sehe deinen
Mund. mein schatz

(Red Lips Your dress so red. your mouth so red. mein
Schatz. your lips so read. mein schatz. the whole
World is red. i see your mouth. mein schatz
("mein Schatz" means literally "my treasure",
i.e Something like "my precious" or "dear".)

Robert Görl was born on June 15, 1955, in Munich, Germany and started his life in an orphanage. At the age of 18, Görl got drum lessons from the jazz musician Freddie Brocksieper. In 1974 he started a classical music education at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg and in 1976 at the University of Graz, also devoting himself to jazz. In 1978, he interrupted his studies, went to London and became interested in punk rock. In the same year, he met Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López in Düsseldorf and formed DAF. Görl also played in other bands such as Der Plan.

In 1984, Robert Görl recorded his first solo album Night Full of Tension (Mute Rec), working with New Wave Diva Annie Lennox.

Görl also played drums on the 1981 Eurythmics (Annie Lennox, David Stewart) album, In the Garden.

The D.A.F. track Alle Gegen Alle was remade by Laibach in 1994. Der Mussolini was remade by Atrocity in 1997 and by KMFDM in 2006. The Patrik Sampler 2017 novel The Ocean Container makes reference to Greif Nach Den Sternen.
