~ Johnny Nash died yesterday. I will always remember his voice as he sang his most famous song, I Can See Clearly Now. It filled me with hope for the future; it soothed me and gave me a sense of comfort.
The reggae-influenced song sold over one million copies, it was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in November 1972. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 4, 1972, and remained on the chart for four
weeks, spending the same four weeks on the adult contemporary chart.
Nash had collaborated with Bob Marley earlier, and his approach drew from Marley's reggae style.
Jimmy Cliff covered the song abd re-recorded it for the motion picture soundtrack of Cool Runnings, where it also reached the Top 20 at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Willie Nelson covered it but instead of with a reggae beat he used a gentle, almost samba beat. It's totally different and a bit strange.
