Loring Eutemey ~ vinyl LP illustrator/designer

The number of vinyl LPs I have purchased simply because of the album cover design is probably in the thousands! Loring Eutemey is one of the designers/illustrators responsible for that.

The number and variety of musicians he has designed covers for is truly amazing. At the top of the list, for me, is Iron Butterfly for their second album, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (link below). He designed the cover for My Favorite Things by John Coltrane. Then there was Wild Thing by the Troggs (originally called the Troglodytes); Sam Kinison did an absolutely hilarious send up of the song and the mood completely fits my first impression of it (link below).

One of my very favorite records is the second album by Bette Midler; Richard Amsel did the illustration, Eutemey did the design. I had never heard of Midler but when I saw the album cover, I bought it and loved the range of music on it (link below). Needless to say, I was not disappointed!

Eutemey did the cover design for the album of the Off-Broadway show,  The Golden Screw by Tom Sankey. A brilliant project but unfortunately, one few people know of (link below).

The list of the artists he has worked with goes on and on. Archie Bell & the Drells, The Young Rascals (later known as The Rascals), Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Ike Turner, Ben E. King, Herbie Mann, The Coasters, João Gilberto, Mel Torme, Acker Bilk, Solomon Burke, Esther Phillips, Leslie Uggams, Joe Tex, Eddie Harris, Donny Hathaway, Ornette Coleman, The Slow Slushy Boys, a French rock, soul, and R&B band that's been active on the underground scene from the early 90's (I love this group simply for the name) and dozens more.

Eutemey has done over four hundred album covers. Unfortunately, I do need to keep the list of the artists under control as it would be endless.

He also designed covers for books; in particular, the 1963 edition of The Black Jacobins by C. L. R.  James published by Vintage Books (link below).

I could not find the date of his birth nor an image of him but he grew up at Revere Place in Brooklyn, and graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School. After graduating from Cooper Union, where he trained as a graphic designer, he began his career at Push Pin Studios during its early days. Later he became a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, widely recognized for his distinctive album cover designs for Atlantic Records.

After a short illness, Loring Eutemey died in 2013 on the 22nd of September, in his apartment in Manhattan. He was 82 years old.

Today, June 1, is the 50th anniversary of the first album released by Black Sabbath in 1970. WOW! It seems so hard to believe it was THAT long ago.

Black Sabbath was an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1968 by guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. They are often cited as pioneers of heavy metal music. The band helped define the genre with releases such as Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), and Master of Reality (1971).

Black Sabbath is considered the first heavy metal album. Additionally, the opening track of the album, Black Sabbath, has been referred to as the first doom metal song. Both music and lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom; the album cover does a very good job of that as well.

(links to all music mentioned at end of article)

The first song, Black Sabbath, opens with a crash of thunder followed by the slow peel of a church bell, the lugubrious dirge intro that quiets down with a tortured vocal by Ozzy Osbourne. At four & a half minutes it breaks into a fast gallop which was a surprise on first hearing. Once the intro is finished Black Sabbath rams forward with no holds barred speed with blazing guitar work by Tony Iommi which breaks to a sudden end. It is considered to be the first heavy metal song.

Wasp / Behind The Wall Of Sleep / Bassically / N.I.B are a sort of medley. A driving beat that moves the feet but not for dancin'! Behind the wall has an Iron Butterfly, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida feeling to it but, they were all influencing each other at that time. It does have some GREAT guitar riffs.

The Wizard opens with a really cool harmonica played by Osbourne that sounds like the whistle of a train. The story goes it is a paean to the band's drug dealer. But Iommi cleared things up in his book Iron Man: My Journey through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath, where he explained that Osbourne and Butler were wandering around stoned and saw some guy leaping around being silly outside of a club. He looked like some kind of elf to them. Thus, The Wizard was born.

Wicked World starts off with hi-hats then goes into a fast number with lots of drum work by Ward for about 45 seconds then goes into a slower syncopated, deliberate beat. Gets slow & almost trippy before going back to the faster beat with a guitar note end that seems to go on forever.

The last cut, which comes in at 14 and a half minutes, is, once again, a sort of medley, A Bit of Finger / Sleeping Village / Warning. The intro, is a beaut! Finger (appropriately named) features a quiet Jew's harp  in a trio with guitar and a beautiful vocal by Osborn. It is slow and trippy; even though it is just 54 seconds in duration, it totally sold me on Heavy Metal. Now THAT'S what I call a song!

 "Sleeping Village/A Bit Of Finger"

Red sun rising in the sky
Sleeping village, cockerels cry
Soft breeze blowing in the trees
Peace of mind, feel at ease

Sleeping Village is moderately slow and deliberate up to just short of four minutes when it goes right into Warning. What a piece of work this cut is! Some incredible gutar work by Iommi who wails away during the instrumental breaks and good vocals by Osborne. At seven minutes it goes into a sensational intrumental brake! Great back and forth with guitar drums. At eight minutes, it rocks on again until another break that is a sonic dream! Picks up again at ten minutes to the a jivey, bouncy beat that is really nice. But that's not the end of it. ANOTHER break with MORE sonic wonders from Iommi; then on to the origianl beat, which even after FIFTY YEARS, I still can't remember how it started!

The record sleeve that came with the album is pretty cool as well. As with most record sleeves it lists the artists that record for the label.  In this case, Warner Bros.

On March 7, 2017, Black Sabbath announced their disbandment through posts made on their official social media accounts.

~ ~ ~

Metamorphosis is the fourth studio album by Iron Butterfly, released on August 13, 1970. Iron Butterfly's album, Metamorphosis, was the new line up with Mike Pinera on Guitar and Vocals and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt on Guitar. Ron Busy on drums, Lee Dorman on Bass, Doug Ingle on vocals and Keyboards. Though it was not as successful as its predecessor Ball (1969), it reached number 16 on the US charts. Erik Brann, who left because of band disputes, was replaced by four session guitarists. Two of them, Mike Pinera and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt (called El Rhino on the sleeve), would become members of Iron Butterfly shortly after the album's release. Officially, the album is credited not to Iron Butterfly, but to "Iron Butterfly With Pinera & Rhino", in reference to the two aforementioned guitarists. The album is noted for having one of the earliest uses of the Talk box on a rock album.

As with all my other albums, there are favorites of mine on this one also. This time, they all happen to be on the second side.

Soldier in Our Town starts out with with a slow drum & hi-hat beat and goes into a torpid rock ballad love sung by Doug Ingle that is stunning.

Easy Rider (Let The Wind Pay The Way) starts moderately fast but quiet before breaking out into an aggressive syncopated sort of tom-tom beat hard rock tune that totally rocks out. Easy Rider reached number 66 on the Billboard chart, making it the band's biggest hit aside from In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

Of the three songs on this album I mentioned that I like, my very favorite is, Butterfly Bleu, what an amazing song it is.

Butterfly Bleu is another epically long song by Iron Butterfly (the other one being, of course, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida). It is slow, with a great bass guitar and drum beat intro. The vocal by Mike Pinera is superb. At a little over four minutes it goes into a fantastic instrumental break that ruptures into a faster beat at four & a half minutes. Then alternates with some great drum work by Ron Bushy.  At seven & a half minutes it speeds up even faster with a great guitar instrumental with trippy vocal effects. At ten minutes there is a great 'scat' duet with voice and guitar. There are very quiet parts that gives one time to catch ones breath. At almost eleven minutes it goes back to the original beat with the vocal. What an amazing exercise in music pyrotechnics!

Soldier In Our Town Lyrics

track #7 on the album Metamorphosis

There's a soldier here today
But she don't bear steel in anyway
She's like a bow
Seeking a wooden arrow
Pointing the way to love

We all know how we can hate
Just as strong as we could ever love
We can love, we can love
God bless you, God
For Sending me a woman
Pointing the way to love

We gotta love a woman

There's a statue in the square
But the things they hadn't
It ain't fair, it ain't fair, Lord
The things they hadn't
Cause beneath the stone
The greatest Man is all alone

Without a woman to love
Without a woman to shove
Without a woman to point the way to love

We gotta love a woman

Easy Rider (Let The Wind Pay The Way) Lyrics

track #8 on the album Metamorphosis

Pegs of people line the street
A ball and chain around their feet
Waitin' for a weekend treat
But Easy Rider's got 'em all beat 'cause

(chorus)
Easy rider, he's a glider
(Easy) Freedom, every day
(Rider) Easy rider, easy glider
Lettin' the wind pay the way
(that's all he ever does)

Freedom!
Freedom!

Puts a rocket in his pocket
At the dawn of day
Needs a goodbye kiss in the mornin', mist
You know the man can't stay.

(chorus)

solo

(who'm I talkin' 'bout)
Easy, easy, easy rider
Easy, easy, easy rider

Goin' easy, where you goin'
Gettin tired of being all alone
Oh, the roads are calling you
Back to where you belong
Oh, ride on!

Talkin' bout Easy........

Butterfly Bleu Lyrics

track #9 on the album Metamorphosis

I found me a little butterfly
As blue as the sky
With just a touch of gold
I knew I had to hold
My butterfly fly away with me

Every time I reached for her
She managed to slip away
Takin' my breath away from me
How can I make her stay?
My butterfly, fly away with me, yeah

My heart was beatin' faster
She started to come near
Spread her wings around me
And cast out all my fears
My butterfly, fly away with me, yeah

Now the bright light of her eyes show
She never was leavin' me
Got in me by my efforts to reach her
Leadin' me to be free
My butterfly, fly away with me
(Yeah, yeah, oow)

Butterfly, fly away

Allmusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine rated Metamorphosis three out of five stars. He explained that "the group continued its musical explorations, adding a layered production to its sound." He also stated that "[the] ambition [...] makes for an interesting listen.
