Pink Floyd ~ Another Brick in the Wall (PartII)

 ~

Forty-six years ago today, on Friday, May 2, 1980, The South African government banned the Pink Floyd song Another Brick in the Wall (PartII). Written by Roger WatersPart 2 is a protest song against corporal punishment in schools, rigid and abusive schooling, and features a children's choir.

Part 2 was the second UK single for Pink Floyd, sold more than four million copies worldwide, topped singles charts in 14 countries, including the UK and the US, and was the UK Christmas No. 1 of 1979. It was nominated for a Grammy Award and ranked number 384 on the Rolling Stone list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

In Part 2, traumas involving abusive schoolteachers become bricks in the wall. In the sequence, children enter a school and march in unison through a meat grinder, becoming "putty-faced" clones, before rioting and burning down the school. The lyrics attracted controversy. The Inner London Education Authority described the song as "scandalous", and according to Renshaw, then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher "hated it". It was banned in South Africa in 1980 after it was adopted by supporters of a nationwide school boycott protesting instituted racial inequities in education under apartheid.

At the suggestion of the producer Bob Ezrin, Pink Floyd added elements of disco, which was popular at the time. When Ezrin heard the song with a disco beat, he was convinced it could become a hit but felt it needed to be longer and added two verses and two choruses. Engineer Nick Griffiths recorded children singing the second verse at Islington Green School, close to the Pink Floyd studio. Alun Renshaw, the head of music at the school, was enthusiastic, and said later: "I wanted to make music relevant to the kids – not just sitting around listening to Tchaikovsky. I thought the lyrics were great – 'We don't need no education, we don't need no thought control' ... I just thought it would be a wonderful experience for the kids." The children's choir in the recording featured 23 students, who practiced for about a week to prepare. Renshaw hid the lyrics from the headteacher, Margaret Maden, fearing she might stop the recording.  Maden said: "I was only told about it after the event, which didn't please me. But on balance it was part of a very rich musical education." When Ezrin played the children's vocals to Waters, "There was a total softening of his face, and you just knew that he knew it was going to be an important record."

The children of Islington School received tickets to a Floyd concert, an album and a single. Though the school received a payment of £1,000, there was no arrangement for royalties for the children. Following a change to the copyright law of the United Kingdom in 1996, they became eligible for royalties from broadcasts. After the royalties agent Peter Rowan traced the choir members through the social network service Friends Reunited and other means, they successfully lodged a claim for royalties with the Performing Artists' Media Rights Association in 2004. For later shows, Waters employed local school choirs to perform the song with him.

Gilmour recorded his guitar solo using a 1955 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top guitar with P-90 pickups.

A live version of Another Brick in the Wall (PartII), with Cyndi Lauper on vocals, recorded on 21 July 1990 at Potsdamer Platz, was released as a single on the 10th of September, 1990. Korn recorded a decent cover in 2004.

The Threepenny Opera & the Tango

   ~
Die Dreigoschenoper (The Threepenny Opera)

On August 31, 1928, Die Dreigoschenoper (The Threepenny Opera) by Bertolt Brecht with music by Kurt Weill, premiered in Berlin. The play has been represented on the Viewfinder (links below) several times. There have been hundreds of presentations of the work but there are two very interesting interpretations I have found fascinating.

The first was adapted by playwright Wallace Shawn and brought back to Broadway by the Roundabout Theatre Company at Studio 54 in March 2006 with Alan Cumming playing Macheath, Nellie McKay as Polly, Cyndi Lauper as Jenny, Jim Dale as Mr Peachum, Ana Gasteyer as Mrs Peachum, Carlos Leon as Filch, Adam Alexi-Malle as Jacob and Brian Charles Rooney as a male Lucy. Included in the cast were drag performers. The performances, set design by Derek McLane, costumes by Isaac Mizrahi and choreography by Aszure Barton are astounding! It is also heavy on LGBTQ references.

There is a video of the complete performance on YouTube; although the quality of it sucks royally, it is worth watching even with all it's imperfections. There is a good quality video of the Tango-Ballad performed by Lauper (as Jenny) and Alan Cumming (as Macheath) during the 2006 Tony Awards (link below).

While Cummings and Lauper sing the Tango-Ballad, they are joined by the cast dancing to the tango, men with men, women with women; this is appropriate as the dance originated in Argentina and was performed in the brothels of Buenos Aires where men danced with each other while they waited for the women who were busy with other clients. The anticipation aroused sexual tension between two male dancers. Eventually it developed into the aggressive movements and struggle for dominance that define the dance.

During tango’s early days, Argentina was largely populated by male, working-class immigrants. One statistic claims there were seven men to every woman in the country, making marriage and companionship both competitive and a prize awarded only to a few.

Due to Argentina’s draught of X chromosomes, even heterosexual brothers danced with one another. Same-sex dancing was simply a fun way to pass time, a chance to brush up on moves before a potential female suitor came along. It put two men chest to chest, moving strong hips to the alluring beat while fighting for dominance on the floor, just good fun.

In 1903, the very first photo of the tango was published in the magazine Caras y Caretas. The dancers were both men.

In 2001, the world’s first official queer milonga opened in Hamburg, Germany. Argentina’s inaugural International Queer Tango Festival sashayed onto the scene that same year.   These two simultaneous events marked the beginning of the Queer Tango movement—a distinct style deliberately tossing gendered movements aside in favour of giving and receiving ‘impulses.’

The second version by the Berliner EnsembleBerlinGermany, opened on September 27, 2007, by director Robert Wilson. It had all the wonderful qualities, but different, of the Roundabout production of the previous year (links below).

Six singles were released from the album, with Girls Just Want to Have Fun becoming a worldwide hit and her first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Time After Time became her first number-one hit on the chart and experienced similar success worldwide. Lauper found success with the next two singles as well, with both She Bop and All Through the Night peaking in the top five. This makes Lauper the first female singer to have four top five singles on the Hot 100 from one album.

I love every song on the album but, as usual I have a favorite or two, one is the wonderfully exuberant, She Bop. What a fantastic song to just let yourself go with and dance your head off.

My other favorite song was written by Prince; it is When You Were Mine. Lauper's cover is slower and not as frantic sounding. All Through the Night written by Jules Shear is a beautiful breath of fresh air. Time After Time is a sweet and romantic melody.

The album is primarily new wave-based, with many of the songs being influenced by synthpop and pop rock. Upon its release, the album received positive reviews from music critics, who noted Lauper's unique vocals. Lauper earned several awards and accolades for the album, including two Grammy Awards at the 27th Grammy Awards, one of which was for Best New Artist.

She's So Unusual peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 chart and stayed in the chart's top forty for 65 weeks. It has sold over 6 million copies in the United States and 25 million copies worldwide. This makes it Lauper's best-selling album to date and one of the best-selling albums of the 1980s. In 2003, The album was ranked at number 494 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and it subsequently placed at number 184 in a 2020 reboot of the list. In 2019, the album was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

We Are The World is a charity single originally recorded by the supergroup "USA (United Support of Artists) for Africa" in 1985.  It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. The single was recorded on January 28, 1985.

The song was released on March 7, 1985, as the first single from the album. I remember when the song came out; the uplifting felling I got from the message it delivered. We are a nation that welcomes the world to come and be one with us. It was one of the times in my life I was proud to be an "American." Van Cliburn was one of those times (link below).

A worldwide commercial success, topping music charts throughout the world and becoming the fastest-selling American pop single in history. The first ever single to be certified multi-platinum, We Are The World received a Quadruple Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America.

With sales in excess of 20 million copies, it is one of fewer than 30 retail singles to have sold at least 10 million copies worldwide.

The first take had a mysterious jingling in it, so had to be redone. It was discovered the jingling was caused by the jewelry Cyndi Lauper was wearing during the recording session; leave it to Cyndi!
