Today is the birthday of musician and record producer, Rupert Hine, born on September 21, 1947, Wimbledon, London, the son of a timber merchant who also played drums in a jazz band when he was young. His mother was a Red Cross nurse and an amateur ballet dancer.

He has a sparkling career producing albums for the best of the best; Rush, Kevin Ayers, Tina Turner, Howard Jones, Saga, the Fixx, Bob Geldof, Thompson Twins, Stevie Nicks, Chris de Burgh, Suzanne Vega, Underworld, Duncan Sheik, Formula and Eleanor McEvoy! 

        

Hine has recorded six solo albums as well as many albums with other artists. He produced the soundtrack for the film, Better Off Dead and The Deep End.          

Of all the projects he has been involved with, his gem of New Wave music, the 1981 studio album, Immunity; it is at the pinnicle of them for me and is on my "desert island list"!       

     

Of course, I have a favorite song on the album which is Samsara. There's more to the song than music; it has great depth. The title is a Pali/Sanskrit word that means "wandering" as well as "world," wherein the term connotes "cyclic change" or, less formally, "running around in circles." The "cyclicity of all life, matter, and existence" is a fundamental belief of most Indian religions.        

 

The word in Buddhism and Hinduism is the beginningless cycle of repeated birth, mundane existence and dying again. Samsara is considered to be dukkha, suffering, and in general unsatisfactory and painful, perpetuated by desire and avidya (ignorance), and the resulting karma.

Samsara has a quiet but speedy beat that slows for a time, a melody that is dreamy and beautiful with marimba backing at times. It is New Wave at its finest (link to lyrics below)!

 

 

 

 

The personel for the album is extraordinary! Phil Collins plays percussion on the title song, Immunity, and Marianne Faithful sings backup in the first cut on the album, I Hang On To My Vertigo, I can relate to this song (link below).             

 

 

 

 

Trevor Morais plays drums on the album; he is a session player who has recorded with Tina Turner, David Essex, Howard Jones and Björk. Geoffrey Richardson is a British viola player and multi-instrumentalist best known for his work with Caravan, Murray Head and the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.  

 

 

Hine suffered from a number of medical problems, including renal cancer and arrhythmia. He died at his home in Wiltshire on the 4th of June, 2020. He was 72 years old.

Tina Turner, "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll", died last week; Tina was one of my "Immortal Loves" (link below) and, of course, I was devastated.           

 

 

 

When I heard about her death it brought back to mind the wonderful tales Kaisik Wong told me about his fashion adventures, which were many. He worked with such music icons as Betty Davis, wife of jazz musician Miles Davis, Leila And The Snakes, and there was his encounter with Tina and Ike Turner which was at the top of my favorite tales by him.     

I chose this CD to honor her because it's one of my favorite albums by her, she is wearing one of the fashions similar to the those Kaisik designed for her . . .

  . . . one of the songs on the album was produced by Rupert Hine who also worked with Turner on her Private Dancer album, the packaging for the album was totally cool and the music is pretty good as well.

Limited Edition Passport Edition.

TINA TURNER Foreign Affair (1989 UK limited edition 12-track CD album including The Best and Steamy Window, in special 7" x 5" (appr. 17 x 13 cm) passport pack with integral 16-page booklet and gold embossed artist/title/logo on the cover).

This edition of Tina Turner's Foreign Affair album is limited. It has the Original album "foreign Affair".
The Presentation of this Limited Edition: It comes in a custom passport design with a designed Tina Turner Coat Of Arms on the cover.

Inside we get the wavy background that reads Tina Turner Foreign Affair, which is repeated just like inside a real passport. No detail is left out here, the passport cover is a Navy Blue/Indigo colour with Gold Colour printing for the titles and Emblem. The back of the front cover has Tina Turner's album Logo in a blasted rosy pink colour, which turns purple towards the right. It also features some lyrics from the title track, in a handwritten style. After the song credits we get a passport details page for Tina Turner with a nice photo and a printed signature. The following pages contain the photographs from the Foreign Affair album artwork shoot.

The complete set is resented here in a scrapbook/photo album feel way. The Middle Page contains the Iconic Image by Herb Ritts that appears on the Foreign Affair Tour Programme and the Steamy Windows Single Cover. The back page has a full-page photograph of Tina. Detail is that the song titles appear over the each of the pages in a passport stamp nature. All individually designed with the credits for the writers, composers and producers within each unique shape.

The Disc comes in a white slip cloth that is housed inside a pocket at the back that you slide the Disc into... So basically a Limited Edition that goes well with the Foreign Affair Concept. An Collector's item that is becoming increasingly rare to find as it has been deleted for many years.

Passport has release number CDP 7 93129 2 and  states "Printed in UK".
Disc has number CDP 7 91873 2 with artwork similar to the regular UK release. CD states "Made in Austria", although it is said there is also a disc with matching passport artwork.

Capitol Records ~ the inner sleeve: The Capitol Tower

Sixty-five years ago today, April 6, 1956, Capitol Tower, the home of Capitol Records was dedicated. It was the first circular office tower designed in America.

That day is crystal clear in my mind as it was at the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Sci-Fi, I was deep into it and the building was right out of one of the books and pulp magazines I devoured. I thought to myself it was the future coming to life right in front of me. Little did I know my life would witness MANY Sci-Fi fantasies come true.      

 

Located at 1750 North Vine Street in Hollywood, a neighborhood in the central region of Los Angeles, California, it is thirteen stories tall and 92 feet in diameter. The photo below shows the Capitol Records Building seen from the Hollywood and Vine intersection near sunset on June 30, 2009.

Designed by Welton Becket with Louis Naidorf, a young architect from Becket's office, serving as project designer the earthquake-resistant Capitol Records Tower is the world's first circular office building. Home to several recording studios, it is one of Hollywood's most distinctive landmarks. Although not intended as a tribute to record players, its wide curved awnings and tall narrow tower mimic the appearance of a stack of gramophone records atop a phonograph. The building was commissioned by EMI after its acquisition of Capitol Records in 1955 and was completed on April 6, 1956.

According to Atlas Obscura (link below), the light at the top of the tower on the Capitol Records Building sends out a secret message. It was the former president of Capitol Records, Alan Livingston, who got the idea to have the light on top of the building send out a signal in Morse code. The word chosen for this secret message was “Hollywood.” When the building opened in 1956, Samuel Morse’s granddaughter Leila Morse had the honor of turning the light on.

Photographer Ted VanCleave has done a series of very dramatic and beautiful black and white images of the Capitol Records Building. Phaidon has issued a book, California Captured which features the tower. According to Slipped Disc, the tower has been shut down and its staff laid off; and Moses Avalon says it has been converted to condos (links below).

Today is the birthday of Ike Turner who was born in 1931 in Clarksdale, Mississippi to Creole parents. When Turner applied for his first passport in the 1960s, he discovered that his name was registered as Ike Wister Turner. By then both of his parents were deceased, so he could not verify the origin of his name.             

In 1957, Turner met Ann Bullock (Tina Turner) at Club Manhattan in East St. Louis, Illinois. Turner and Bullock eventually began having an affair and she became pregnant in January 1960. Following the formation of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue and the birth of their son Ronnie in October 1960, they were married in Tijuana in 1962.

In his 1999 autobiography, Turner claimed that he was still legally married to Alice Bell when he married Tina; Turner states that he located Bell in Chicago and divorced her. Turner claimed on more than one occasion that he had never been officially married to Tina. They divorced in March, 1978. Tina retained songwriter royalties from songs she had written, but Ike got the publishing royalties for his compositions and hers. She also kept her two Jaguar cars, furs and jewelry along with her stage name. Tina gave Ike her share of their Bolic Sound recording studio, publishing companies, and real estate, and he kept his four cars.

He has been hailed as a "great innovator" of rock and roll by contemporaries such as Little Richard and Johnny Otis. Rolling Stone magazine editor David Fricke ranked Turner No. 61 on his list of 100 Greatest Guitarists and noted, "Turner was one of the first guitarists to successfully transplant the intensity of the blues into more-commercial music." Turner won five Grammy Awards, including two competitive awards and three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards. Turner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Tina Turner in 1991. He is also inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame, the Clarksdale Walk of Fame, the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, and the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.

Bad Dreams is a studio album by musician Ike Turner released on United Artists Records in 1973. The album cover was illustrated by W. T. Vinson and designed by Mike Salisbury who also created the cover for the Ike & Tina Turner album Live! The World of Ike & Tina.

As with every album I like, I have a favorite song; on this one it is Don't Hold Your Breath which starts out fairly quietly with him humming; it's a moderate speed tempo that builds to a driving beat.

Rats is a strange song; the music is fast and staccato but Turner speaks the lyrics as opposed to sing them. I believe he is talking about people, actually.

On December 10, 2007, Turner told Falina Rasool that he believed he was dying and would not live until Christmas. As he predicted, he died two days later, on December 12, at the age of 76, at his home in San Marcos, California, near San Diego.
