Goodbye, Columbus was covered by several artists: George Benson, Morty Lewis, Enoch Light and The CompanY, a Filipino vocal group still performing today. Barbara McNair covered the song, Love Has a Way, also from the film (links below).

Last month I wrote about an event that happened here in San Francisco and was also repeated in communities across the nation, the removal of the Christopher Columbus statue that stood in front of Coit Tower (link below). The article triggered a recollection of a soundtrack from the sixties film, Goodbye, Columbus.
Goodbye, Columbus is a 1969 American romantic comedy-drama film starring Richard Benjamin and Ali MacGraw, directed by Larry Peerce. The screenplay, by Arnold Schulman, won the Writers Guild of America Award. The film was essentially MacGraw's film debut, as she had previously had only a "bit part" in A Lovely Way to Die.
The story's title alludes to a phonograph record, Carmen Ohio (link below), played by the
brother of MacGraw's character, nostalgically recalling his athletic
career, with game announcer, at Ohio State (links to cast and plot below).

The title song, written by Jim Yester of The Association and the Modern Folk Quartet, was performed by The Association (link below).

In addition to the title song, The Association sang Brenda's Theme, So Kind To Me; both are in the easy listening style (link below).

The plot is simple, Neil Klugman, portrayed by Richard Benjamin, falls in love with Brenda Patimkin played by Ali MacGraw,
the daughter of a well-to-do family who object to the union because
Neil is not of the "proper" class and their objection to premarital sex,
thus the motif, "Every father's daughter is a virgin."

The film was based on the 1959 novella, Goodbye, Columbus, by Phillip Roth. It was his first book and was published by Houghton Mifflin.
It was a series of short stories, my favorite being, You Can't Tell a Man by the Song He Sings, which recalls the events surrounding the meeting with a troublemaker in high school (link below).

My copy of the soundtrack is a "promotional" version used by DJs for advertising the film or record album on radio broadcasting.
