The first Broadway production of Grease opened on June 7, 1972; when it closed in 1980, the 3,388-performance run of Grease was the longest yet in Broadway history, it was surpassed by A Chorus Line on September 29, 1983.

Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, it was named after the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as greasers and set in 1959 at the fictional Rydell High School in Northwest Chicago (based on Taft High School in Chicago, Illinois, and named after rock singer Bobby Rydell), the musical follows ten working-class teenagers.

Having been a Greaser when I was in high school in the fifties, I related to Grease in a BIG way. I had a pompadour hairstyle complete with an Elephants Trunk in front (well, the best I could come up with was a corkscrew and I had never heard it called an Elephants Trunk until I researched this article) and a ducktail (commonly called a duck's ass or DA) in the back, all thanks to pounds of pomade. The hair was VERY heavily pomaded (greased, thus, the term Greaser), combed back around the sides, and parted centrally down the back of the head to create the DA. My mother was always furious about my greasy pillow cases.

Adrienne Barbeau appeared as Rizzo with Timothy Meyers as Kenickie who was a 1972 nominee for Tony Award Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

Replacements later in the run included Jeff Conaway as Danny, Candice Earley as Sandy who was also in Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar; Peter Gallagher as Danny, Richard Gere as Sonny, Ilene Graff as Sandy, Randee Heller as Rizzo, Marilu Henner as Marty, Judy Kaye as Rizzo, Marcia Mitzman Gaven as Rizzo, Patrick Swayze as Danny, John Travolta as Doody and Treat Williams as Danny.

Grease went on to become a West End hit, a successful feature film, two popular Broadway revivals in 1994 and 2007, and a staple of regional theatre, summer stock, community theatre, and high school and middle school drama groups. It remains Broadway's 17th longest-running show.

In 1978 Grease was adapted as a feature film also named Grease starring John Travolta (who had been in stage productions in a different role) and British-Australian singer and actress Olivia Newton-John. The film version changed some plot elements, characters, and songs while adding new songs and elaborating on some plot elements only alluded to in the musical.

There have been professional productions of Grease in Argentina, Austria, Canada and Mexico. A Spanish revival ran successfully at Teatre Victòria, Barcelona from October 3, 2006, to January 6, 2008. After a short national tour, the production was transferred to Teatro Nuevo Alcalá, Madrid, where it ran from October 14, 2008, to January 31, 2010, and then continued touring Spain until it finally closed on August 1, 2010, becoming one of Spain's all-time longest running musical productions, with 1,090 performances.

Today is the birthday of Nigerian jùjú singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, King Sunny Ade who is regarded as one of the first African pop musicians to gain international success and has been called one of the most influential musicians of all time. He was born on the 22nd of September, 1946, in Osogbo to a Nigerian royal family from Ondo and Akure, thereby making him an Omoba of the Yoruba people.

I discovered King Sunny Ade in the early eighties during the time I worked for Bill Schweitzer and Bill Donovan, the owners of the Record Finder. I discovered many artists while working there but I finally had to quit because almost all my salary went to buying records; not a great business plan.

The music of King Sunny Ade is characterised by, among other instruments, the talking drum – an instrument indigenous to his Yoruba roots, the guitar and his peculiar application to jùjú music. His music is in the age-old tradition of singing poetic lyrics ("ewi" in Yoruba) and praise singing of dignitaries as well as components of Juju (traditional African belief) called the Ogede (casting of spells). Hence, Sunny Adé's music constitutes a record of the oral tradition of his people for posterity.

Sunny Adé introduced the pedal steel guitar to Nigerian pop music. He introduced the use of synthesizers, clarinet, vibraphone, tenor guitar into the jùjú music repertoire such as dub and wah-wah guitar licks. Sunny Adé said he used these instruments not as an attempt to innovate, but as a substitute for traditional jùjú instruments which were too difficult to find and/or impractical for touring. The pedal steel guitar, for instance, was added to his repertoire as a sound-alike for an African violin.

Sunny Adé with his band invented his unique sound and instrumental which he mostly uses as an entrance song during live performances. The sound was made with a phalanx of electric guitars that functions like a percussion section and talking drums that sound like a gossipy Greek chorus.

Stevie Wonder adds his disticitve sound as he plays harmonica on Ase, the opening song on the album. Most of the songs have the same rhythm and tempo and are great songs to dance to with the exception of, Ogunja which is slower, syncopated, almost dreamy, the male vocal harmonies are wonderful; unfortunately, it's the shortest song on the record.

The steel guitar played by Ademola Adepoju on some of the songs is outstanding; he also played it on Ade's album, Juju. Tony Allen does a great job on the talking drum.

20,000 Vinyl LPs 123: Edward Hopper ~ The House by the Railroad in film

~

The House by the Railroad - 1925
by Edward Hopper

Art has always had a major influence on film; possibly the most famous example has been The House by the Railroad, by Edward Hopper. It is a fanciful portrait of the Second Empire Victorian home at 18 Conger Avenue in Haverstraw, New York.

The House by the Railroad has been cited as being an influence on the home in the Terrence Malick 1978 film Days of Heaven. It featured Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard and Linda Manz. The photograpy is stunning and the film won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

The score for Days of Heaven was written by Ennio Morricone who received his first Academy Award nomination in his soundtrack composing career for his work on this film. It astounds me that this is his first nomination (think Spaghetti Western or Dollars Trilogy) and that he has never received an award, period (link below).

In 1910, a Chicago steel worker accidentally kills his supervisor and flees to the Texas panhandle with his girlfriend and little sister to work harvesting wheat in the fields of a stoic farmer. It has been translated in many languages.

Days of Heaven has been translated into french and spanish . . .

The look of the Bates house in the Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho was inspired by The House by the Railroad. The film starred Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh. There are two excellent analyses of the film and the film score, Understanding Psycho and How Music Tells The Story, on YouTube (links below).

Psycho has been translated into almost every language on Earth and there is a soundtrack recording of the film (link below).
