L. Ron Hubbard ~ Mondo Bizzarro

 ~
date & photographer unknown

Today is the birthday of Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, better known as L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Scientology movement. I first was made aware of him and his movement in the early sixties which I wrote about in the Viewfinder (link below).

Born on March 13, 1911, in Tilden, Nebraska, Hubbard was the author of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health in 1950. Hubbard initially developed a set of ideas that he called Dianetics, which he represented as a form of therapy.

After Dianetics went bankrupt, he recharacterized his ideas as a religion, likely for tax purposes, and renamed them Scientology which is variously defined as a cult, a business, a religion, or a scam.

When Scientology came under increasing media attention and legal pressure in a number of countries during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Hubbard spent much of his time at sea as "commodore" of the Sea Organization, a private, quasi-paramilitary Scientologist fleet. He returned to the United States in 1975 and went into seclusion in the California desert after an unsuccessful attempt to take over the town of Clearwater, Florida. In 1978, Hubbard was convicted of fraud in absentia by France. In the same year, 11 high-ranking members of Scientology were indicted on 28 charges for their role in the Church's Snow White Program, a systematic program of espionage against the United States government.

Hubbard spent the end of his life in seclusion, attended to by a small group of Scientology officials. Following his death in 1986, Scientology leaders announced that Hubbard's body had become an impediment to his work and that he had decided to "drop his body" to continue his research on another plane of existence. The Church of Scientology describes Hubbard in hagiographic terms, though many of his autobiographical statements were fictitious. Sociologist Stephen Kent has observed that Hubbard "likely presented a personality disorder known as malignant narcissism."

Hubbard created art in various mediums; he was the author of Battlefield Earth in 1982 and composed an album, Space Jazz, to accompany the book. In 1984, the LP was retitled Battlefield Earth, the version I have, bassist Stanley Clarke and keybordist Chick Corea perform on it (link below). In 2000, director Roger Christian made the book into a film which starred John Travolta, Barry Pepper, and Forest Whitaker.

20,000 vinyl LPs 364: Grease with a corkscrew & a Duck's Ass

The first Broadway production of Grease opened on June 7, 1972; when it closed in 1980, the 3,388-performance run of Grease was the longest yet in Broadway history, it was surpassed by A Chorus Line on September 29, 1983.

Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, it was named after the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as greasers and set in 1959 at the fictional Rydell High School in Northwest Chicago (based on Taft High School in Chicago, Illinois, and named after rock singer Bobby Rydell), the musical follows ten working-class teenagers.

Having been a Greaser when I was in high school in the fifties, I related to Grease in a BIG way. I had a pompadour hairstyle complete with an Elephants Trunk in front (well, the best I could come up with was a corkscrew and I had never heard it called an Elephants Trunk until I researched this article) and a ducktail (commonly called a duck's ass or DA) in the back, all thanks to pounds of pomade. The hair was VERY heavily pomaded (greased, thus, the term Greaser), combed back around the sides, and parted centrally down the back of the head to create the DA. My mother was always furious about my greasy pillow cases.

Adrienne Barbeau appeared as Rizzo with Timothy Meyers as Kenickie who was a 1972 nominee for Tony Award Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

Replacements later in the run included Jeff Conaway as Danny, Candice Earley as Sandy who was also in Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar; Peter Gallagher as Danny, Richard Gere as Sonny, Ilene Graff as Sandy, Randee Heller as Rizzo, Marilu Henner as Marty, Judy Kaye as Rizzo, Marcia Mitzman Gaven as Rizzo, Patrick Swayze as Danny, John Travolta as Doody and Treat Williams as Danny.

Grease went on to become a West End hit, a successful feature film, two popular Broadway revivals in 1994 and 2007, and a staple of regional theatre, summer stock, community theatre, and high school and middle school drama groups. It remains Broadway's 17th longest-running show.

In 1978 Grease was adapted as a feature film also named Grease starring John Travolta (who had been in stage productions in a different role) and British-Australian singer and actress Olivia Newton-John. The film version changed some plot elements, characters, and songs while adding new songs and elaborating on some plot elements only alluded to in the musical.

There have been professional productions of Grease in Argentina, Austria, Canada and Mexico. A Spanish revival ran successfully at Teatre Victòria, Barcelona from October 3, 2006, to January 6, 2008. After a short national tour, the production was transferred to Teatro Nuevo Alcalá, Madrid, where it ran from October 14, 2008, to January 31, 2010, and then continued touring Spain until it finally closed on August 1, 2010, becoming one of Spain's all-time longest running musical productions, with 1,090 performances.

20,000 Vinyl LPs 120: Saturday Night Fever ~ Disco Daze 2

Well, I can't believe it's been forty years ago today, December 14, 1977, that the film, Saturday Night Fever, and the soundtrack that came from it, burst onto the world. This is the second article about the disco craze I've written for the Viewfinder. The first was on the Skatt Brothers (link below).

Saturday Night Fever instigated the resurgence, after a twenty year hiatus, of the dance film. Dance films had been the pacifier of the Great Depression in the thirties. It encouraged people to get up and dance to forget their worries. However, the bleak reality of the era was vividly recounted in the film, They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, which starred Jane Fonda, Michael Sarrazin, Susannah York, Bruce Dern, Bonnie Bedelia and Gig Young. The film ended with a grim hopelessness that was indeed, depressing.

Saturday Night does have its light moments, however; my favorite part of the movie is when the group is in the diner talking about rock artists of the period; in particular, David Bowie. At one point Tony (John Travolta) claims Bowie swings both ways, the scene ends with them barking as they leave. Now, what the . . . . ?        ;-)

On the surface, Saturday Night Fever, was light and fun but the story is almost but not as grim as Horses. It revealed the world of disco and the shallow people who populated it. Unlike Horses, it does end with hope, though.

The Bee Gees music, which propelled the action of the movie, was fun and captured the excitement of the dance clubs that proliferated in the late seventies. The music was totally different from their earlier work, which I loved dearly, and it was a shock! I thought, "They've gone Disco! What a sell-out!" However, the music is so infectious I fell for it anyway. Except for the clothes (oh, my gosh, bell-bottom hip-huggers and long-lapel polyester shirts!), the presentation of the epoch in the movie left me skeptical as to its veracity. Although there was usually a jammed dance floor, I never saw ANYONE sync-step or dance in a group nor did I EVER see anyone raise their arm over their head and point their finger.
John Travolta as Tony Manero

I wasn't totally knocked out by the star of the film, John Travolta, but he effectively captured the essence of Tony Manero, the arrogant, self-centered character he portrayed. The film made Travolta a superstar and he later went on to tout the teachings of the Scientology guru, L. Ron Hubbard (link below).

Of course, I have favorites from the album. From the Bee Gees, You Should Be Dancing, which is originally from the album Children of the World, released in 1976, and Jive Talkin' the lead single from the album Main Course which hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, get my vote. Then comes Stayin' Alive which was written for the film.

My very favorite song from the film is If I Can't Have You which featured the beautiful and dynamic voice of Yvonne Elliman. It was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. Barry is the sole survivor of the trio. Even though it is about a dissolving love affair, I love its bouncy, syncopated beat and it made for excellent dancing.

Pillow (link below) liked Calypso Breakdown by Ralph MacDonald and would dance to it when we weren't dancing together. I loved to watch her dance solo.

Another favorite of mine is Night On Disco Mountain, by David Shire, which was a cover of the tone poem by Modest Mussorgsky. Night is based on the theme of a witches' sabbath occurring on St. John's Eve, which Mussorgsky completed on that very night, 23 June 1867.There is a great review of the song on Financial Times (link below).

The gatefold format of the album allows room for lots of pix . . .

. . . and the record sleeve has tons of info, lyrics and more pix.

The film significantly helped to popularize disco music around the world and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack is one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time. Everyone, even symphonic conductors, got into the act as did Arthur Fiedler with his album, Saturday Night Fiedler (link below). Side one was devoted to music from the film with the Bachamania, based on the Bach Toccata and Fugue in d minor and the August Wilhelmj arrangement, Air for the "G" String, based on the the second movement of the Bach Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068 completing the flip side (YouTube links below).
