Norma Jeane Mortenson was born on Tuesday, June 1, 1926, to Gladys Pearl Baker (née Monroe) at the Los Angeles County Hospital.

On Thursday, February 23rd, 1956, Norma Jeane obtained an order from the City Court of the State of New York to legally change her name from Norma Jeane Mortenson to Marilyn Monroe.

As Marilyn Monroe, she made many films and I loved them all; but my two favorite movies of hers, one a drama the other a comedy, are Niagara in which she is, according to the movie poster, " . . . a raging torrent of emotion that even nature can't control!"

Niagara ~ movie poster

WOW!
Pretty heavy stuff!

I was actually torn between the The Misifts and Niagara as to her dramatic roles but as the theme is "forma" I figured the latter was the best and she's totally radiant with that bloom of youth look. Don't Bother to Knock is pretty intriguing as a mid-career dramatic role. It's my favorite film of hers as it was the first time I saw her and fell completely in love with her, so, first loves, . . . .

Don't Bother to Knock movie poster - 1952

In Niagara Monroe is Rose Loomis, the ultimate self-centered, conniving and totally irresistible Femme fatale . . .

"luring men to their ultimate destruction!"

However, she very tenderly, (un poco dramatic, if not a bit over the top), sings the song, Kiss, which is beautifully evocative of the sound of the 50's and accentuates the look of the film. It is a lovely ballad filled with unfulfilled promises and longing for . . . what?

Joseph Cotton is George Loomis, her jealous husband, with newly weds Polly Cutler (Jean Peters) and Ray Cutler (Max Showalter) her hapless husband who ogles Monroe through most of the film.

There is a video with the trailer for the film (link below) that contains the key points in the film so that you don't even have to see the film, but it's well worth seeing the complete move. As the trailer says, "Niagara and Marilyn Monroe, the two most electrifying sights in the world!"

My second favorite film by Monroe is the 1959 film, Some Like It Hot, (which she was, in Spades!) with two of the most perfectly cast actors, Tony Curtis as "Josephine" and Jack Lemmon as "Daphne". it's a delight to hear how they got the roles in the first place (link below). What a trio THEY made!!!!

As I always roar with laughter and never get tired of watching Some Like It Hot, I had not realized that Monroe was not so great to work with on the film and it was not a joy for the participants. There is an excellent video, The Making of Some Like It Hot, that is pretty revealing of Monroe during the filming (link below).

There have been stories about animosity between Curtis and Monroe because of something he said but that are not true. He has said that he got so tired of people asking him what it was like to kiss Monroe, that in irony he told a reporter, "Kissing Monroe was ‘Like Kissing Hitler’!" The phrase was then taken out of context.

A perfectly superfluous aside which has absolutely nothing to do with the film: there is a great song by the Power Station called Some Like It Hot with a powerful vocal by Robert Palmer, but it IS a hot song and I couldn't resist mentioning it! The video for it (link below) featured model Caroline Cossey (also known as Tula).

53 years ago today, on August 5, 1962, Norma Jeane Mortenson died and became one of the great legends of Hollywood; her death was cloaked in mystery and many theories as to its cause. Although her life was glamorous to the outside world and by the standards of our society, in private, her life was complicated and tragic. Norma Jeane had legally changed her name to Marilyn Monroe on February 23, 1956, in New York.

On March 25, 2015, World News Daily Report published an article titled "Retired CIA Agent Confesses on Deathbed: 'I Killed Marilyn Monroe.'" According to the article, former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operative Normand Hodges completed 37 assassinations during his career — among them the killing of the Hollywood legend and long-rumored mistress of President John F. Kennedy. Although the report was picked up and covered by many news sources, it was later shown to be false by Snopes; however, it illustrates the ferver to attribute the event to part of a conspiracy.

Who Killed Marilyn?

Nineteen years after Monroe's death, Glenn Danzig released the single, Who Killed Marilyn?, on a 45 RPM record. Other versions of this song have been released by the Misfts (Legacy of Brutality, the Boxset, etc.), but the Glenn Danzig version recorded on this 45, along with the B-side, Spook City USA, is only available on this 45 and has never been released on CD. There were only 5000 copies pressed.

Who Killed Marilyn? is classic punk at its best filled with effects backing the cheesy sounding, crashing tune racing along with a frenzy to match that of the Monroe conspiracy theories.

Marilyn is backed by the song, Spook City, but City could very easily have been an extension of Who Killed Marilyn?. The two songs are played one after the other on YouTube (link below).

These tracks were originally recorded with The Misfits in 1979, and they had one 12" "Who Killed Marilyn?" EP created on acetate; but this proved to be too expensive for them to produce at the time. In 1981 Glenn Danzig re-recorded two of the tracks, playing all the instruments himself, and released it as this solo 7" single.

An interesting note about the packaging of this recording is that the hole for the turntable spindle is on the nose of Monroe . . .

. . . this makes for a startling effect as when the spindle protrudes through the spindle hole, there is a bizarre result.

Glenn Danzig is an American singer, songwriter, musician and founder of the bands, the Misfits, Samhain, and Danzig. He was born Glenn Allen Anzalone on June 23, 1955, sixty years ago in Lodi, New Jersey.

Some Like It Hot!

Double WOW!

In the film directed by Billy Wilder, Monroe plays, Sugar "Kane" Kowalczyk, a singer who also plays a ukulele (a popular instrument in the '20's) in an all-girl band. Sugar is also a sucker for male sax players, whom she has sworn off because they have stolen her heart in the past and left her with "the fuzzy end of the lollipop".

Sugar "Kane" Kowalczyk (Marilyn Monroe

Joe (Tony Curtis), a sax player, and Jerry (Jack Lemmon), who plays bass, are running away from a gangster (George Raft) so they hide out in drag as Josephine and Daphne with the girl orchestra. Needless to say, the situations are hysterical!

The action of the film takes place in the 1920's during prohibition with all the follies that came with it. Most of the music, of course, is from that era as well. The songs include: Runnin' Wild, Sugar Blues, Down Among the Sheltering Palms, By the Beautiful Sea, La Cumparsita, Sweet Sue, Just You, Sweet Georgia Brown, and, of course, the tune that defined that era, I Wanna Be Loved by You, brilliantly sung by Monroe.

Loved by You is my favorite cut from the album/film. Her version of the song is exquisite; she has all the sex combined with innocence that only Monroe could have carried across (links below to the song on YouTube).

I Wanna Be Loved by You was first performed in the 1928 Broadway musical, Good Boy, by Helen Kane, who became known as the 'Boop-Boop-a-Doop Girl' because of her baby-talk, scat-singing tag line to that song. It was recorded right when Kane's popularity started to reach its peak, and became her signature song.

 Helen Kane (August 4, 1904 – September 26, 1966)

However, Kane had swiped the "Boop" scat singing style from an African American performer by the name of "Baby Esther".

In 1930, a cartoon character named Betty Boop was introduced in the animated film, Dizzy Dishes.

Betty Boop performs I Wanna Be Loved by You in the 1980s animated film The Romance of Betty Boop.

There were some pretty hefty lawsuits flying back and forth involving the three characters and they continue even to this day! Who owns Betty Boop?
