On January 3, 1957, Antoine "Fats" Domino Jr. recorded I'm Walkin'. Written in collaboration with  Dave Bartholomew, it became a huge hit peaking at No. 4 on the pop singles chart! There is a terrific sax solo played by Herbert Hardesty, Frank Fields is on bass and Earl Palmer is on drums.

I loved the bouncy, happy and joyous sound of I'm Walkin'. In spite of the circumstances of the song, the lyrics promise a positive resolution, so, almost always gives me an uplifting feeling.

Ricky Nelson did a crossover cover of the song on an episode of The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet; the single was released on Verve Records and reached No. 4 on the pop chart and No. 10 on the R&B chart. It was good but it didn't have the gusto of the Domino version.

In 1961, Nancy Sinatra performed the song on a television show and the song was later released on the album Bubblegum Girl Vol. 2 in 2005. Her version is pretty laid back and cool, none of the fire of the Domino version.

I'm in the Mood for Love is a popular song published in 1935. The music was written by Jimmy McHugh, with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. The song was introduced by Frances Langford in the movie Every Night at Eight released that year. Louis Armstrong also recorded this song and Julie London sang it on her album Julie Is Her Name; I love her version of the tune, it's slow, romantic and fantastically beautiful.

Chickens on Wood String Band ~ MOOvin' 'n GROOvin'!

I had some fantastic luck last weekend; I caught the Chickens on Wood String Band at The Local, a coffee shop on Park Street in Alameda. C.O.W.S. is a new string band group just starting out and it was their second, ever, public performance. Their first was the week before at the Fireside Lounge (link below). They don't even have a website yet, that's how new they are! You can find them on Facebook, however (link below).

The Local is situated on a corner with huge windows looking out on to the street, so, in turn, you can look in and see the performers playing in the window; a brilliant idea to entice walker-bys to come in!        

  

And what a great time I had! The group is really good with an earthy, down-home feeling that made me just want to get up 'n dance! It reminded me of some of the great sounds Roy Acuff put out in the late forties. It's his birthday comin' up in a few days, by the way.

I had gone because I wanted to hear what sculpture artist, Alison Limoges (link below) was up to. I was not in the least disappointed; she may have a new career ahead of her. 

Their music is a mix of blues, modern country music and bluegrass; you could throw in a little jazz. They did a terrific cover of These Boots Are Made for Walkin' made famous by Nancy Sinatra as one of the finale pieces and it brought the house down.

This may be one of the most under appreciated albums of all time. Of course, this is just my opinion. Each song on it is a delightful slice of real life: happy, sad, wistful, uproariously hilarious and just a lot of good 'ol fun. 

Who will ever forget, These Boots Are Made For Walkin'? What a brilliant paean to the "Hit-the-road dude! I've had it with you!" I remember Fruggin' and Ponying to this song in the '60's. Boots is paired with, Jackson, which gives both sides of the story, from "Hotter than a pepper sprout!" to "Ever since the fire went out!" in hysterical fashion with it's bouncy, syncopated rhythm. I love 'em!

My least favorite song, You Only Live Twice, from the James Bond film, was dramatic with it's orchestral backing but it was popular. Equally as dramatic but much more powerful was Lightning's Girl which was as close as she got to anything remotely psychedelic.

Then there are the beautiful songs, Some Velvet Morning (Lord, I remember being totally ripped and listening to it) and Summer Wine, a moderately fast and bouncy but lovely, almost country western feeling song with it's lush orchestral background.

Friday's Child is gloriously bluesy with it's female chorus backup and guitar accompaniment. A wonderful ballad that made good use of her voice. Sugartown is a delightful throwback to the innocent days of the '50's; a mellow stroll down memory lane.

The uncomfortable situations of life are represented by the wonderfully joyful, Did You Ever, a tribute to the Lily Tomlin-like almost but never completed train-of-thought conversations. There is the almost awkward but romantic feeling of Something Stupid with her father, Frank Sinatra. The two harmonize beautifully together.

Most of the songs were written by Lee Hazelwood, a great song writer and brilliant with words. Most of the humor is just down to earth happiness. What a joy to listen to the songs. Near the bottom of this post there are links to the songs mentioned on YouTube so you can hear them for yourself, if you'd like.
