20,000 vinyl LPs 379: Giacomo Puccini ~ Puccini's Greatest Hits

A hundred and twenty years ago today, the premier of Madama Butterfly, an opera in two acts by Italian composer, Giacomo Puccini, had its premiere on February 17, 1904 at La Scala in Milan.

The libretto is by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on the short story Madame Butterfly (1898) by John Luther Long, which in turn was based on stories told to Long by his sister Jennie Correll and on the semi-autobiographical 1887 French novel Madame Chrysanthème by Pierre Loti. Long's version was dramatized by David Belasco as the one-act play Madame Butterfly: A Tragedy of Japan, which, after premiering in New York in 1900, moved to London, where Puccini saw it in the summer of that year.

I have several copies of the opera but I chose this version as it was the first copy of Butterfly I owned and became the one I listened to most of the time. The reason: it featured Leontyne Price as Butterfly; I have a long story about my love for her since I was in my late teens and I saw her in Aida (link below). The Humming Chorus is beautifully performed by the RCA Italiana Opera Chorus & Orchestra conducted by Erich Leinsdorf. The Butterfly excerpts also feature opera greats Richard Tucker, Anna Moffo and Rosalind Elias.

In addition, Leontyne Price sings the beautiful aria from Gianni SchicchiO Mio Babbino Caro and the intensely poignant Vissi D'arte from Tosca. Both performed by her brilliantly on this recording! There is a video of her at almost sixty years old singing the aria for the Feb 23, 1983, Grammy Awards and she is magnificent (links below)!

20,000 vinyl LPs 352: Mario Lanza ~ The Great Caruso

Today is the birthday of American tenor, actor, and Hollywood film star, Mario Lanza who was born on January 31, 1921.

The Great Caruso was Lanza's very best film. It was directed by Richard Thorpe and produced by Joe Pasternak who produced other Lanza films. I've published other articles about them (link below).

The screenplay, by Sonya Levien and William Ludwig, was suggested by the biography Enrico Caruso His Life and Death by Dorothy Caruso, the tenor's widow. The original music was composed and arranged by Johnny Green who produced other Lanza films (link below).

The Opera Montage are Metropolitan Opera stars, notably sopranos Teresa Celli, Lucine Amara and Marina Koshetz, mezzo-soprano Blanche Thebom, baritone Giuseppe Valdengo and bass Nicola Moscona.

Ann Blyth portrayed the Wife of Caruso.

Several of the characters and incidents portrayed in the movie are fictional. Because of this, members of the Caruso family in Italy successfully sued Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for monetary damages, and the studio was temporarily ordered to withdraw the film from exhibition in Italy.

The Great Caruso was a massive commercial success and the most profitable film for MGM in 1951. It set a record gross at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, grossing $1,390,943 in ten weeks. According to MGM records, it made $4,309,000 in theatrical rentals in the US and Canada and $4,960,000 elsewhere, resulting in a profit of $3,977,000. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards; at the 24th Academy Awards ceremony, Douglas Shearer and the MGM Studio Sound Department won for Best Sound and it was nominated for three Academy Awards; costume design and score.

The Great Caruso record album (not an actual film soundtrack) was issued by RCA Victor on the LP, 45 and 78 RPM formats. The album featured eight popular tenor opera arias (four of which were heard in the film) sung by Lanza, accompanied by Constantine Callinicos conducting the RCA Victor Orchestra. The album sold 100,000 copies before the film premiered and later became the first operatic LP to sell one million copies. After its original 1951 release, the album remained continuously available on LP until the late 1980s and was reissued on compact disc by RCA Victor in 1989.

78 RPMs 8: Giacomo Puccini ~ Butterfly = Licia Albanese

Two hundred and seventeen years ago today, on February 17, 1904, the premier of the opera, Madama Butterfly, by Giacomo Puccini, took place at the La Scala opera house in Milan, Italy.

Italian coloratura soprano, Rosina Storchio performed the title role of Cio Cio San at the 1904 premier of Madama Butterfly . . .

. . . but it was Italian-born American operatic soprano, Licia Albanese who made the role of Cio Cio San hers when she made her unofficial debut in Milan in 1934 when she replaced another soprano in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, the role for which she would be celebrated. For over 40 years, she sang more than 300 performances of Cio-Cio-San.

Although Albanese has been praised for many of her roles, including Mimì, Violetta, Liù and Manon Lescaut, it is her portrayal of the geisha which has remained her best known. Her connection with that work began early with her teacher, Giuseppina Baldassare-Tedeschi, a contemporary of Puccini, and an important exponent of the title role in the previous generation.

Albanese appeared with the San Francisco Opera where she sang between 1941 and 1961, performing 22 roles in 120 performances over 20 seasons, remaining in part because of her admiration for its founder and director, Gaetano Merola. I saw her in one of those performances; it was the reason I bought this album.

Although she specialized in Puccini and was associated with his Madama Butterfly more than with any other role, during her career Licia Albanese was one of the most beloved sopranos in the Italian repertoire, specializing in roles that suited her appearance. She was a leading singer with the Metropolitan Opera from 1940 to 1966. Her years at the Met included a number of Saturday afternoon broadcasts.
