Clint Eastwood is ninety-five today

 ~

Clint Eastwood has a milestone birthday today; ninety-five years old! Jeez! I really can't believe it! But give me another ten years and I'll be there as well!

The American actor and film director lives vividly in my memory as Rowdy Yates in the Western television seriesRawhide, which premiered on January 9, 1959.

Clint Eastwood  as Rowdy Yates in Rawhide

Of course, to say nothing of his role as the "Man with No Name" in the Sergio Leone Dollars Trilogy of spaghetti Westerns during the mid-1960s, which include A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) and  Hang 'Em High (1968).

"I wanted to play it with an economy of words and create this whole feeling through attitude and movement. It was just the kind of character I had envisioned for a long time, keep to the mystery and allude to what happened in the past. It came about after the frustration of doing Rawhide for so long. I felt the less he said, the stronger he became and the more he grew in the imagination of the audience."

Eastwood branched out to co-star in a musical, Paint Your Wagon (1969). Eastwood and Lee Marvin play gold miners who buy a Mormon settler's less favored wife (Jean Seberg) at an auction. The film was not a critical or commercial success, but was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Play Misty for Me, was the film that gave Eastwood the artistic control he desired, and his debut as a director in 1971. The script was about a jazz disc jockey named Dave (Eastwood), who has a casual affair with Evelyn (Jessica Walter), a listener who had been calling the radio station repeatedly at night, asking him to play her favorite song – Misty by Erroll Garner. When Dave ends their relationship, the unhinged Evelyn becomes a murderous stalker. Filming commenced in Monterey in September 1970 and included footage of that year's Monterey Jazz Festival.

Today, singer, song-writer Roberta Flack died. The news brought back a flood of memories for me and they triggered the Killing Me Softly album; it was not her first one but the first one I owned by her. I was in my early thirties, into very long songs and at almost 10 minutes, Suzanne fit that need nicely for me. Her cover was WAY longer than the Leonard Cohen version. I LOVED both versions!

As with every album I love I have favorite cuts; second to Suzanne is Killing Me Softly with His Song. The laid-back, dreamy and sensual tone of this song gets me every time I listen to it. It was featured in the 1971 Clint Eastwood film, Play Misty for Me, which made the song a number-one hit in the United States, Australia and Canada for Roberta Flack, and also reached number six on the UK Singles Chart.

The album has a wonderful fold out dye-cut cover by Queens Lithographing Corp. established in 1950 by Jack Hecht, Martin Kaltman and Max Verebay in Long Island City.

Today is the birthday of American comedian and satiristPat Paulson, who was born on July 6, 1927, in South Bend, Washington. He is primarily known or his roles on several of the Smothers Brothers television shows, and for his satirical campaigns for President of the United States between 1968 and 1996.

He only recorded three albums, Live At The IcehouseUnzipped and this one. Somehow, this one seemed to be the most appropriate at this moment in our history.

Paulson attended San Francisco City College and met the Smothers Brothers during an appearance in San Francisco. He made a guest appearance on The Monkees in the 1968 episode Monkees Watch Their Feet, playing the Secretary of National Defense. In 1968, he appeared as timid Federal Agent Bosley Cranston in The Night of the Camera in Season 4 of The Wild Wild West which starred Robert Conrad.

on The Smothers Brothers Show c. 1967

After CBS sold five minutes of airtime on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour for a political ad, the show's writers came up with a bit in which Paulsen disclaimed association with the ad and stating that the ad was unfair to him as a candidate. CBS refused to air the bit, but the incident became the impetus for the Smothers Brothers writers launching a Pat Paulsen presidential campaign. His campaign in 1968 and succeeding years was grounded in comedy, although not without serious commentary. He ran the supposed campaigns using obvious lies, double talk and tongue-in-cheek attacks on the major candidates, and he responded to all criticism with his catchphrase, "Picky, picky, picky". There're videos of him on the The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour that is incredibly right on target for almost every single issue we face today (link below).

Paulsen's name appeared on the ballot in New Hampshire for the Democratic primary several times. In 1996, he received 921 votes (one percent) to finish second to President Bill Clinton (76,754 votes); this was ahead of real politicians such as Buffalo mayor James D. Griffin. In 1992, he came in second to George Bush in the North Dakota Republican primary. In the 1992 Republican Party primaries, he received 10,984 votes total.

Shortly after Clint Eastwood was elected mayor of Carmel, California in 1986, the LA Times reported that Paulsen proclaimed himself "mayor" of Asti, the small town near his vineyard. The office was of his own invention.

In 1995, Paulsen was diagnosed with colon cancer, and doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to his brain and lymph nodes in 1997. He sought alternative medicine treatment for his cancer in Tijuana, Mexico, and died there from complications of pneumonia and kidney failure on April 25, 1997.
