El Potrillo is a Mexican restaurant near my studio that has great Mexican style food that I enjoy and I go there to have lunch and dinner from time to time. Their specialty is birrieria, a Mexican dish from the state of Jalisco, one of its most famous dishes. Each of the 125 municipalities in the state of Jalisco is said to have its own version of this dish. The most famous are goat birria from Ameca and cow's head birria from Mascota. There's a link to the complete history of birrieria below.

The Spanish term "birria" is used to describe immaterial things without value or quality. It is a traditional ancestral soup or stew made from a combination of chili pepper-based goat meat adobo, garlic, cumin, bay leaves, and thyme, and cooked at a low heat. I prefer the stew which is dry compared to the watery soup.

With no connection to the restaurant whatsoever, there is a singer, Alejandro Fernández, who goes by the nickname "El Potrillo" (links below).

Also, there is a lively dance by the same name that was performed by Nuevo León in Tijuana, Baja California. (link below).

One of the perks is during Christmas time, most Mexican restaurants do decorations up big; El Potrillo is no exception to the rule. There's a link to how to get to El Potrillo below.

La Comida

And they serve my very favorite beer, Negra Modelo

Negra Modelo is from a large brewery in Oaxaca (heaven on earth), Mexico that exports beer to most countries of the world.

Its export brands include Corona, Modelo, and Pacífico. Grupo Modelo also brews brands that are intended solely for the domestic Mexican market and has exclusive rights in Mexico for the import and distribution of beer produced by Anheuser-Busch. Until the 1960s, Grupo Modelo used red poppy flowers in most of its advertising.

María Asunción Aramburuzabala, known as Mariasun, is Mexico's second wealthiest woman and inherited her stake in Grupo Modelo; she is a Mexican billionaire businesswoman and is chairperson of Tresalia Capital, a venture capital firm. She has a net worth of over US$5 billion.
