Today is the birthday of cute as a button, 1960's teen idol, Bobby Vee, born on April 30, 1943, in Fargo, North Dakota. His father was a chef, pianist and fiddle player of Norwegian descent and his mother was of Finnish descent.

The career of Bobby Vee was born when he had to fill in after the 1959 plane crash that killed rock 'n' roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. (The Big Bopper) Richardson were killed in the crash of a V-tailed 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza airplane on February 3, 1959.

His single, Rubber Ball (1961, U.S. number six, Australia number one), made him an international star. The song was covered by Gary Lewis and the Playboys in 1966.

The album is a gatefold format designed by Kittyhawk Graphics, so there is plenty of room for graphics as well as information.

The songs are classic Motown, such as his cover of Beauty Is Only Skin Deep, written by Norman Whitfield and Edward Holland, Jr., and produced by Whitfield. It had been a big hit on the Pop and R&B charts by The Temptations two years earlier. Stubborn Kind of Fellow, written by Marvin Gaye, also fits in this category. It was Gaye's first big reaching the top 10 of the R&B chart and the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1962.

Can You Love A Poor Boy, written by Ivy Hunter and Stevie Wonder, is a gentle ballad; Wonder never recorded the song.

The Medley, I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) and It's The Same Old Song, both written by the Holland–Dozier–Holland team, had the same feeling of the originals with a great female chorus backup; it was a pretty good cover of the songs.

Run Like the Devil, written by Paul Leka and Irwin Schuster, has the typical 60's sound. Leka also wrote  Green Tambourine, recorded by the Lemon Pipers, and the classic, Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye (one of my all-time favorite songs) recorded by him, Gary DeCarlo and Dale Frashuer under the name Steam.

Fifty-three years ago today, April 29, 1968, the rock musical drama, Hair, opened on Broadway and the world of theater musicals would never be quite the same. Hair reflects the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the 1960s,

The Off-Broadway production of Hair had opened the year before in October of 1967 and I had purchased the vinyl LP of that production by the time the show hit Broadway, so, I was familiar with the music. To me Hair was the culmination of The Summer of Love as I perceived it, because it captured the innocence and the rage against injustice of that VERY short period, plus the show had a raw edge that appealed to me.

Hair ~ Original Broadway Cast poster - 1968

I was heavy into musicals at the time and had been since the forties (link below). One musical, West Side Story (link below), had broken new ground ten years earlier in 1958. Hair was like no musical I had ever seen. It is no big deal by today's standards but at the time it blew me away!

The show generated tons of controversy because of a scene in which the cast appears nude. I remember sitting in the audience anticipating that scene and then it finally happened. In the production I saw the cast formed a large circle and had a huge translucent fabric that they held over their heads and waved it up and down so that it billowed, the stage lighting went dim and while some held the fabric overhead, others got undressed underneath it. Between the dim lighting and the fabric casting a shadow over them you couldn't really see anything. I thought to myself, "Big Deal!"

The music was written by Galt MacDermot with lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado.  would go on to write the music for Two Gentlemen of Verona in 1971. The cast for Verona included Raul Julia, as one of the leads, with Stockard Channing and Jeff Goldblum (in his first Broadway performance) in the chorus.
