On this day, April 22, in 1937, John Joseph Nicholson, was born in Neptune, New Jersey. He is better known as, Jack Nicholson.
To me, Nicholson's greatest role was in the 1975 film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which was based on the 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. So, out comes my vinyl LP recording of the soundtrack from the fiim to honor him.
The film was directed by Miloš Forman, with an incredible score by Jack Nitzsche, who has composed dozens of great film scores (link below). My favorite cut from the film is the closing theme. The theme starts with a slow drum beat then is joined by a musical saw played by Robert Amstrong. It is an eerie sound that is joined by an orchestra that builds then nicely resolves into a grand exultation near the end; it stops abruptly then the drum and saw take over again. It's quite a spectacular piece of music!
