On September 4, 1986, the Dire Straits song, Money for Nothing, won the music television MTV award for Best Video. The 1985 Brothers In Arms album, which features this song, is one of my "Desert Island" (link below) picks.

The song was produced by Mark Knopfler and features a guest appearance by Sting singing background vocals, providing both the signature falsetto introduction and backing chorus of "I want my MTV."         

 

"Weird Al" Yankovic did a pretty good cover of the song that featured Buddy Ebsen and Irene Ryan from the television show The Beverly Hillbillies.

At midnight, forty years ago today, on Saturday, August 1, 1981, the MTV cable channel was launched and they broadcasted the very first music video from One Astor Plaza, 1515 Broadway, Times Square, Manhattan, New York where it is still based.     

 

The song they blasted out to the world was Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles from their second album, The Age of Plastic: the prophetic song would forever change the way we listened to and, indeed, watched pop music or any music for that matter.

Video Killed the Radio Star was written by Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes and Bruce Woolley in 1978. It was first recorded in 1979 by Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club (with Thomas Dolby on keyboards) for their first album and used again on their second album, English Garden. The later recording by British new wave/synth-pop group the Buggles, with just Horn and Downes, became the big hit version.

In those early days of broadcasting, MTV was desperate for video to show so they showed just about anything they could get their hands on (link below); I saw some truly fantastic stuff. I still remember the network's "VJ's" I liked the best, Alan Hunter, Nina Blackwood and my very favorite, Martha Quinn: I thought she was the cutest EVER!

I loved the song by Dire Straits, Money for Nothing, which references MTV with an iconic, echoey refrain (below).

There is a terrific video of the first two hours of the broadcast on YouTube with some of the greats of rock at the time, commercials included (link below). This is a valuable documentary of a major music event and a whole lot of fun to watch. The one downer is, April Wine and Cliff Richard were short-sighted and objected to the use of their videos so they were cut from the documentary; too bad, their loss!

Today is the anniversary of the release of the 12" single, Do They Know It's Christmas?, by Band-Aid; it was recorded by forty music artists (link below) assembled to aid famine relief in 1984.

The song was written by by Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats and Midge Ure of Ultravox fame in reaction to television reports of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia.                

 

It was first recorded in a single day on November 25, 1984, by Band Aid, a supergroup put together by Geldof and Ure and consisting mainly of the biggest British and Irish musical acts at the time. The group's name stemmed from the idea that the musicians were providing aid to the less fortunate and suggested that their project was likened to putting a band-aid on a wound. It depicts the poverty-stricken African scenery of the time. Lyrics of the song included a description of the country saying, "where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow, do they know it's Christmas time at all?"      

 

Geldorf wrote the lyrics and Ure wrote the music. The 12" version was mixed by Trevor Horn. The single was released in the United Kingdom on December 3, 1984.     

 

In 1986 the original music video from Do They Know It's Christmas? won Band Aid a Grammy Award nomination for Best Music Video, Short Form.         

 

The Band Aid project has inspired many other charity records around the world (link below).

This limited-edition "World Tour Pack" of Flowers In The Dirt, by Paul McCartney, sold in a facsimile trunk, was issued in Britain in October of 1989, and in the United States (with British catalogue numbers) in January of 1990. The set includes a bonus single of Party Party (link below) (mixed by Bruce Forest and released on a one-sided 7" single in vinyl editions of the "World Tour Pack" and a 3" CD-single in compact disc editions of the "World Tour Pack"). I have it for sale on Discogs (link below).

Flowers In The Dirt is a collaborative effort with Elvis Costello that included musical contributions from David Gilmour from Pink Floyd, and Nicky Hopkins of  the Rolling Stones.
