Almost years ago today, September 6, 1982, Peter Gabriel released his Security album. I love all his albums  but to me this one is at the top of the list and it is on my "Desert Island" list (link below). Each and every song is a gem!

Security is one of my top New Wave album greats and I have it on my "Desert Island" list (link below). I love it so much I bought the German version of it, Deutsches Album (Security) (link below) and each is sensational in its own way.

One of my favorite songs on the album is The Family and the Fishing Net. It starts out with a very deep, almost fog horn sound then multiple snares start up a laguid beat. The lyrics are almost unintelligible. Gabriel has said of the song:
"It's basically a wedding song, but it's more an approach from the undercurrents of the wedding ritual. There are quite a lot of situations that we accept as perfectly normal and regular, traditional, that have this element of ritual that makes deep impressions on the psyche. And this is a somewhat impressionistic account of a wedding. I'd also been reading quite a lot of Dylan Thomas at the time, so there is that influence in the lyric writing."
Primus, an American funk metal band formed in El Sobrante, California in 1984, does a really great cover of the song (link below).

The image on the front cover of Security is from an experimental video Gabriel directed with sculptor Malcolm Poynter, with professional help from his editor, David Gardner.

Peter Gabriel said:
“The artwork on album 4 was something that I’d been working on with a sculptor called Malcolm Poynter, who’s work I thought was really strong. There was a book I’d seen on distortions, a little like fairground mirrors, and we started using Flexi Mirrors”.
Malcolm Poynter said:
“My memory of this project, which was crucially pre-Photoshop, was us dragging around Flexi Mirrors and Fresnel Lenses, and some sculptures, and then having a very creative (if chaotic) time. It was good!”

Security was recorded on Quiex II which was a pure vinyl formulation used in the 80's that was colored with dye rather than the more commonly used carbon black (which has coarse granules and creates noise).

A vinyl LP is usually "black," but Quiex II held up to light, some light can be seen coming through the vinyl; not precisely translucent, but it looks sort of glowy/brownish rather than blocking out all the light.

Security began with the rhythm. Always fascinated by textures, Gabriel had been digging deeply into folk drumming from Africa. He'd also become intrigued by early sampling technology.

"I think the rhythm is like the spine of the piece," Gabriel said on 1982. "If you change that, then the body that forms around it is changed as well. So, the style of writing which I was then attracted to put with it was very different from what I would have done with a normal rock rhythm."

Once he got the cadences down, Gabriel worked for a long period of time improvising over these basic skeletons of song and began to record at home on rented equipment.

I saw the group at the I Beam in the Haight in the late 80's. They were pretty good musicians; there is a great video of their song Horny Pig. (YouTube links below). Buck Naked was the favorite musician of Les Claypool, (Primus).
