I've been spending a lot of time checking out the scene in Jack London Square; restaurants, etc. My latest find is the Brooklyn West winery which had a wind tasting event last weekend sponsored by Aqua Via condos just a block away.
I met wine maker Stewart Epstein, originally from Brooklyn, New York, during the event and he gave me tons of information about the area I had never known before, e. g., I had known the area as Rancho San Antonio but he told me it was also called Brooklyn at one time; thus the name of the winery.

Rancho San Antonio, also known as the Peralta Grant, was a 44,800-acre (181 km2) land grant by Governor Pablo Vicente de Solá, the last Spanish governor of California, to Don Luís María Peralta, a sergeant in the Spanish Army and later, commissioner of the Pueblo of San José, in recognition of his forty years of service. The grant, issued on August 3, 1820, embraced the sites of the cities of San Leandro, Oakland, Alameda, Emeryville, Piedmont, Berkeley, and Albany. That's some grant!
The sons of Peralta established the first Spanish-speaking
communities in the East Bay. As the rancho prospered, the
brothers built newer and bigger houses. It became an established stop for
travelers along what was during the Spanish era the only camino real on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay.
Due to legal and familial dusputes, government taxes, etc., by 1879, there was little of the original land grant left and developer Henry Z. Jones laid out streets and parcels in the Brooklyn and Allendale Townships (both of which later became Oakland).
Back to the wine tasting event at Brooklyn West winery. There were two wines served that evening, a sauvignon blanc and a red. I chose the red.

It is a beautiful blend called Luce Solare which is Italian for "sun light". It is a hearty wine that would go perfectly with pizza or a roast beef.
