Easter is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus Christ, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.
The origins of Easter stem from the Middle Ages; it was forbidden to eat eggs during the Lenten fasting period, this left a lot of uneaten eggs. From the surplus emerged the tradition of decorated eggs.
The word is derived from the festival of the Anglo-Saxon Spring goddess Ēostre. Stories about the goddess Ostara were popular in newspapers at the turn of the twentieth century.
Passover eggs, commonly eaten during the Seder meal, inspired one of the most expensive traditions in history: the famous Fabergé eggs.
These eggs were created for the imperial family of Russia and decorated with the most precious materials. Fabergé's first egg was made when the Tsar Alexander III requested that the royal goldsmith Peter Carl create an egg to offer the Tsar’s young wife, Maria Fedorovna.

During the jeweler’s career, Karl produced a series of fifty imperial
eggs for the Tsar's family. These imperial eggs have since gone on to
auction for several tens of millions.
