101 Reel-to-Reel Tapes 70: Nazareth ~ Exercises

In addition to my vinyl LP record collection I'm selling, I have hundreds of reel-to-reel, pre-recorded tapes as well. This is an entry about one of them that was for sale on eBay (see link below). Interested? Contact me by email, please, not by a comment.

The group was originally called, The Shadettes, but in 1968, the band changed their name to Nazareth, inspired by the opening lyric from The Weight, a song by The Band

Exercises is the second studio album by the Scottish hard rock band Nazareth, released in 1972. Although their music is most accurately described as "blues-tinged hardrock", this album is quite far from the band's more standard fare, featuring a number of acoustic arrangements, several songs with orchestral strings, and traditional Scottish airs. The album's 1692 (Glen Coe Massacre) is about a real incident in Scottish history, namely, the massacre of Glencoe. The album is also significant for its Roy Thomas Baker production, only his third project, and well before his breakthrough works with Queen in the mid-seventies, and its oddly 'new wave' cover-art (designed by CCS Associates). An early version of their Razamanaz song, Woke Up This Morning, also makes an appearance on Side 1.

Pete Agnew, bass and acoustic guitar, is one of the original founders of Nazareth, and the sole remaining original member of the band.

William Daniel "Dan" McCafferty, born on October 14, 1946, in Dunfermline, Scotland, was the lead singer for Nazareth from its founding in 1968 to his retirement from touring with the band in 2013.

Darrell Antony Sweet, born on May 16, 1947, was the drummer for the Scottish hard rock band, Nazareth. He was a co-founder of Nazareth, which was formed in 1968. Sweet was born in Bournemouth, England. His early years were spent playing with The Burntisland Pipe band, also a member of the Shadettes. Sweet was a founding member of Nazareth playing drums from 1969 until his death on April 30, 1999. Sweet died of a heart attack as the band prepared to set out on the second leg of its U.S. tour in support of their latest album, Boogaloo. The band had arrived at Indiana's New Albany Amphitheater when the 51-year-old Sweet began to feel ill. Within minutes he had gone into cardiac arrest. He was taken to Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany, where doctors pronounced him dead. He played drums on Nazareth's first 20 albums.

Lee Agnew was born on January 13, 1971, in Dunfermline, Scotland. He is the son of Pete Agnew. Lee Agnew worked as a drum technician, drummer and percussionist for Nazareth, and when Darrell Sweet died in 1999, he became the permanent drummer of the band.

The music

I Will Not Be Led has an orchestral backup with a nice, bouncy beat with some pretty dramatic vocal moments by Pete Agnew.

Cat's Eye, Apple Pie is a down-home kinda song with some cool harmonica work by Jedd Lander that laments the loss of  a love but it doesn't sound like he's really all that broke up about it.

In My Time is a slow rock-waltz that glides nicely along reminiscing about the people in the singer's life and pondering about growing old. A mellow and beautiful song.

Woke Up This Morning has a fantastic steel guitar intro that leads into a moderate-speed hard rocker of a song that is perfect for dancing. The lyrics are hysterical; Agnew sings about his dog getting shot in the head, his cat is dying, his hog was stolen and the house burnt down but he's not the least bit perturbed. A GREAT dance song and a total riot!

Fool About You is a happy kind of song. It has a nice chorus back up and again, some good harmonica work.

Love Now You're Gone is a slow, I guess you could call it a dirge lamenting the loss of the loved one. The bass synthesizer by David Hentschel is a nice touch to the song.

Madelaine is a very slow melody that is dreamy and really beautiful with a really nice echo to the guitar that is quite lovely. A great love song in the tradition, hard rock style.

Sad Song has some really nice orchestral back up, string arrangements by Colin Fretcher, that is a quite nice accompaniment; it is slow, dreamy and beautiful.

1692 (Glencoe Massacre) has to be the gem of this album. It is the tale of an historical event that happened in Scotland. There is some really nice bagpipe work by Jedd Lander here. A very dramatic piece that fades out to a slow, funereal  snare drum.

Early in the morning of February 13, 1692, in the aftermath of the Glorious Revolution and the Jacobite uprising of 1689 led by John Graham of Claverhouse, a massacre took place in Glen Coe, in the Highlands of Scotland. This incident is referred to as the Massacre of Glencoe, or in Scottish Gaelic Mort Ghlinne Comhann (murder of Glen Coe). The massacre began simultaneously in three settlements along the glen—Invercoe, Inverrigan, and Achnacon—although the killing took place all over the glen as fleeing MacDonalds were pursued. Thirty-eight MacDonalds from the Clan MacDonald of Glencoe were killed by the guests who had accepted their hospitality, on the grounds that the MacDonalds had not been prompt in pledging allegiance to the new monarchs, William and Mary. Another forty women and children died of exposure after their homes were burned. It is astounding and sad what man can do to each another.

This June was a pretty good month for seeing art. Amongst many of the venues in the offing, there was the exhibition by Suzy Barnard in Palo Alto (see link below) and a week ago the Oakland Pro Arts association held it's annual East Bay Open Studios with the JABC representing Jingletown in Oakland.

It was a hectic time in my life so I was limited to just two venues in the 2014 Jingletown Open Studios. The first was the Gray Loft Gallery

Here's who & what  I saw there:

Then I headed over to the 420 Gallery

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Beatles invasion of the US

. . . continued from The Beatles ~ Rubber Soul

the Beatles on the tele

On February 9th, 1964, the Beatles appeared on television on the Ed Sullivan Show; the appearance released pandemonium in the audience and the rest of the U. S. It opened a new door in the world of music and changed the face of it forever. In 2002, The Ed Sullivan Show was ranked #15 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.

(from Wikipedia)

Four and a half months later, on the 25th of June, 1967, 47 years ago today, All You Need Is Love was first performed by The Beatles on Our World; the first live, international, satellite television production. Watched by 400 million in 26 countries, the program was broadcast via satellite. The BBC had commissioned The Beatles to write a song for the United Kingdom's contribution. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at #362 in their 500 greatest songs of all time. All You Need Is Love was written by John Lennon and credited to Lennon/McCartney.

Opera singer, Maria Callas, and painter, Pablo Picasso, were amongst the many others representing nineteen nations that were invited to perform or appear in separate segments featuring their respective countries as well.

The Beatles were asked to come up with a song containing a simple message to be understood by all nationalities. "It was an inspired song and they really wanted to give the world a message," said Brian Epstein. "The nice thing about it is that it cannot be misinterpreted. It is a clear message saying that love is everything." According to journalist Jade Wright, "Lennon was fascinated by the power of slogans to unite people and never afraid to create art out of propaganda. When asked in 1971 whether songs like "Give Peace a Chance" and "Power to the People" were propaganda songs, he answered: 'Sure. So was All You Need Is Love. I'm a revolutionary artist. My art is dedicated to change.'"

The day before the Our World broadcast, The Beatles decided that the song should be their next single. Released in the UK on 7 July 1967, it went straight to number one and remained there for three weeks. It was similarly successful in the United States after its release on 17 July, reaching number one for a week.[citation needed] It was also included on the American LP version of Magical Mystery Tour in November.

The interviews on The Beatles Anthology documentary series reveal that Paul McCartney and George Harrison were unsure whether the song was written for Our World. However, George Martin and Ringo Starr assert it was. When asked, McCartney replied:

For the bollo, The Beatles were (except for Starr) seated on stools, accompanied by a small studio orchestra. They were surrounded by friends and acquaintances seated on the floor, many of whom were among the leading stars of the British pop scene, who sang with the refrain during the fade-out, including Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, Keith Richards, Keith Moon, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash, Pattie Harrison, Jane Asher, Mike McCartney, Gary Leeds and Hunter Davies.

The performance was not completely live: The Beatles, the orchestra, and guests were overdubbing onto a pre-recorded rhythm track mainly consisting of piano, harpsichord, drums, and backing vocals. The full Our World segment opens with the band and company listening to the raw backing track, as commentator Steve Race explained the process in voiceover. The live overdubs seem to include not only lead vocals, orchestra, and the improvised call-and-response, but also bass guitar, Harrison's guitar solo, and a second drum track — which seems to go out of time with the original track during the first few bars. At the beginning of the song, under "La Marseillaise," a tambourine is shaken, but this was mixed out and replaced with a drum roll before the single was released.

Lennon, affecting indifference, was said to be nervous about the broadcast, given the potential size of the international TV audience. Dissatisfied with his singing, he re-recorded the solo verses for use on the single. Starr also overdubbed drums before the single was released, fixing the aforementioned timing problems and adding the drum roll.

The programme was broadcast in 'black-and-white' (colour television had yet to commence broadcasting in Britain and most of the world). The Beatles' footage was colourised, based on photographs of the event, for The Beatles Anthology documentary.

All You Need is Love lyrics
 (Love, love, love)
(Love, love, love)
(Love, love, love)

There's nothing you can do that can't be done
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung
Nothing you can say but you can learn to play the game
It's easy

There's nothing you can make that can't be made
No one you can save that can't be saved
Nothing you can do but you can learn to be you in time
It's easy

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

(Love, love, love)
(Love, love, love)
(Love, love, love)

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

There's nothing you can know that isn't known
Nothing you can see that isn't shown
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be
It's easy

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

All you need is love, all together now
All you need is love, everybody
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need

Except for All You Need Is Love (because it is the focus of this once in a life-time event) and the information about it, I'm not going to talk about any more of the music by this once in a life-time group. There has  been so much written about this album and them, there is nothing new I can possibly add. As has been said so many times, the whole equaled more than the individual parts.
