Yesterday was the summer solstice (link below). Because it is the longest it is my favorite day of the year and I celebrated it one way or another each year; this time by attending a marvelous performance of Quartet, a 1999 play about aging opera singers by South African-born British author, playwright, and screenwriter, Ronald Harwood.      

 

The setting is a retirement home for musicians. It opens with three former opera-singers, who worked together, sitting and talking. Reginald quietly reads a book, while Wilfred constantly makes erotic innuendos as he regards Cissy who is lying back and listening to music through her headphones. They are joined by Jean, who was a major star in her day and to whom Reginald was once unhappily and briefly married. All struggling to deal with the problems and realities of growing old.      

    

A gala concert is about to take place at the retirement home to celebrate the birthday of Giuseppe Verdi. Three of them are keen to recreate the third act quartet Bella figlia dell'amore from Rigoletto but Jean is not; the action involves convincing her to join in the quartet with hilarious incidents. The play concludes as Reginald and Jean have reconciled and the four are costumed and lip-synch to their own retro recording. The result is charming and I had a most enjoyable solstice!         

 

The show’s director, Stephanie Singer, is an actor, director, and an acting and improv teacher. She directed the 2023 multimedia musical play JFK a Remembrance at the Rossmoor Event Center and recently directed Doubt (link below) at the Town Hall Theaterr in Moraga.

The play features Tom Cassese, Neil Fiore, Lee Gale Gruen, Edward Kimak and Jean Wilcox. It closes today, June 22 with a matinee performance.

Dustin Hoffman said that Ronald Harwood was inspired by the 1984 documentary Tosca's Kiss (about Casa di Riposa the world's first nursing home for retired opera singers, founded in 1896 in Milan by composer Giuseppe Verdi) to write the original play and subsequent film (link below) on which Quartet is based.

Last month was the birthday of Robert Plant, which was August 20. Plant was the lead singer and lyricist of the rock band Led Zeppelin! How could I possibly have missed that? OK, I'll make up for lost time.            

 

This article is not so much about the music as it is about the record album cover, so, it belongs in my "Just the cover, Ma'am" category (link below).         

The title came from the strong presence the group felt as they worked together. The LP's artwork from Hipgnosis featured several photographs focused on a mysterious black object, called "The Object".

The first and only album by Blind Faith was released fifty years ago today on June 22, 1969. They were an English rock group comprised of Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech. The band was anticipated by the music press as a continuation of Clapton and Baker's former group Cream and Winwood's former group Traffic but they split after one album and a tour. 

The story of Blind Faith is not a pleasant one according to the memoir, Born Under a Bad Sign, by Johnny Black in Mojo Magazine and featured on the Ginger Baker website (link below). Black says the group should have been the "Golden Child" instead it was Rosemary's Baby. The group was doomed before it even started due to inexperience of the members and the indifference of Clapton.

The album drew controversy for featuring a photograph by Bob Seidemann of a naked prepubescent girl holding what appears to be the hood ornament of a Chevrolet Bel Air, which some perceived as phallic (what kind of phalluses were THEY referencing?), on the front cover, and it was banned in the United States.

The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one on both sides of the Atlantic and receiving mostly positive reviews.

On a list by Rolling Stone of "The 30 Greatest One Album Wonders", Blind Faith was at 14, while songs such as Can't Find My Way Home and Presence of the Lord were described as "incredible". Classic Rock Review spoke positively of the album, saying the critical acclaim it had received was "well-deserved". The German edition of Rolling Stone ranked the album as the 140th greatest of all time.

Blind Faith was released on Polydor Records in the United Kingdom and Europe and on Atlantic Records in the United States. It topped the album charts in the UK, Canada and US, and was listed at No. 40 on the US Soul Albums chart. It has been certified platinum by the RIAA.

The music

Winwood composed a lot of the music on the album. My favorite song is Had To Cry Today. It starts with a moderate speed tempo with a simple but dissonant feeling. As it progresses it gets more complicated with some fantastic guitar work by Clapton. At almost 9 minutes there is plenty of time to do some interesting experimenting.

Their cover of the Buddy Holly song, Well, All Right has some really nice piano and organ work by Winwood.

Presence of the Lord is a slow, stroll down a dreamy lane that picks up speed and gets a bit rowdy before settling back down again.

Side two consists of just two songs, one of them a 15-minute jam entitled Do What You Like. The violin playing by Grech in Sea of Joy is a very nice breath of fresh air.   

The band was able to produce two hits, Winwood's Can't Find My Way Home and Clapton's Presence of the Lord.

The other day I was working with Lon (link below) on the vinyl LP collection and he pulled out my old recording of All the Young Dudes, by Mott the Hoople; the song began to play in my mind and it triggered many wonderful memories of that time in my life.  
       

All the Young Dudes is the fifth studio album by Mott the Hoople, released in 1972. It was their initial album for the CBS Records label (Columbia Records in North America), and was a turning point for the then-struggling British band. The group was about to break up when David Bowie stepped in and gave them the song All the Young Dudes. Bowie also produced the album, which took Mott "from potential has-beens to avatars of the glam rock movement".

I have always loved the title track, All the Young Dudes, which was released as a single prior to the album and charted worldwide, becoming the "ultimate '70s glitterkid anthem". Sweet Jane, a cover of the Velvet Underground song from their 1970 album Loaded, was issued as a single in Canada, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United States, though not in their home market of the UK. One of the Boys, originally the B-side of All the Young Dudes, was also released in North America and Continental Europe.

A "dude" is a "fop or dandy" who lives in a big city. The word was first used in print in 1870, in Putnam's magazine. The illustraion by George Underwood on the album cover is from a black and white 1917 ad for Society Brand Clothes.

Other songs that incorporate the word "dude" in their title are Dude (Looks Like a Lady) by Aerosmith, Do It Like a Dude by Jessie J and Party At a Rich Dude's House by Kesha.

With its dirge-like music, youth suicide references and calls to an imaginary audience, the song bore similarities to Bowie's Rock 'n' Roll Suicide, the final track from Ziggy Stardust. The lyrics reference contemporary stars T. Rex and contain references to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. NME editors Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray have described the track as "one of that rare breed: rock songs which hymn the solidarity of the disaffected without distress or sentimentality".    

Bowie once claimed that the song was not intended to be an anthem for glam, that it actually carried a darker message of apocalypse. According to an interview Bowie gave to Rolling Stone magazine in 1973, the boys are carrying the same news that the newscaster was carrying in the song Five Years from Ziggy Stardust; the news being the fact that the Earth had only five years left to live. Bowie explains: All the Young Dudes is a song about this news. It's no hymn to the youth, as people thought. It is completely the opposite." All the Young Dudes is also thought of as a gay anthem. Lou Reed said "It's a Gay Anthem! A rallying call to the young dudes to come out in the streets and show that they were beautiful and gay and proud of it."

The original release of the song had to be changed lyrically in order that it might be played on UK radio and TV. The line in the second verse: "Wendy's stealing clothes from Marks and Sparks" was a reference to UK retailer Marks & Spencer, also known by that colloquialism. As such, air play of the song in its original form would have breached broadcasting regulations relating to advertising in force at the time. The line was replaced with: "Wendy's stealing clothes from unlocked cars". Today, both versions are freely aired (link to lyrics below).

All the Young Dudes has been covered by Bruce Dickinson (of Iron Maiden), Ozzy Osbourne and Tesla. Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby reference the song, along with a number of other glitter-era hits, in Another Drive-In Saturday on their self-titled 2008 album.

Before moving to the CBS Records label, the group was with Island Records in the UK and Atlantic Records in North America for three years. Speculation has persisted over the years that, although All the Young Dudes was released by CBS/Columbia Records, the group may have recorded part or all of the album while still under contract to their original label, Island Records – a situation that, if proven true, might give Island ownership rights to the recordings. Fuel was added to this speculation in 2006 with the re-release of Young Dudes in remastered form, including several bonus tracks.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 491 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. In 2012, the album listed at No. 484 on a revised list by the magazine.    

In 2004, Rolling Stone rated All the Young Dudes No. 253 in its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and on its 2010 update was ranked at number 256. It is also one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
