I normally don't write a negative article; I can usually find something positive about the subject I've focused on. This is the exception.

This has possibly got to be the schmaltziest film in cinematic history. And the music (by Francis Lai)! Oye vey! It almost drove me out of the theater.

Ali MacGraw was innocent and beautiful, and Ryan O'Neal was cute as a button but neither of them could bring life into the film for me.

Love Story is a 1970 romantic drama film written by Erich Segal, who also authored the best-selling novel of the same name. It was directed by Arthur Hiller and starred Ryan O'Neal, Ali MacGraw, John Marley, Ray Milland and Tommy Lee Jones in his film debut.

"Love means never having to say you're sorry" is a line from the film which is corny but memorable; it has been referenced ever since. In 2005 it was voted #13 in the American Film Institute's list AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes. The band Sounds of Sunshine had a Top 40 hit in the United States with a song titled Love Means You Never Have to Say You're Sorry in 1971. "Love means never having to say you're..." is the opening sentence in the popular song Can't Help But Love You by The Whispers, from their album named after the movie, issued in 1972 (links to the music on YouTube below).

A tragedy (too true), the film is considered one of the most romantic by the American Film Institute (#9 on the list) and one of the highest grossing films in U.S history. It was followed by a sequel, Oliver's Story (1978), starring O'Neal with Candice Bergen (never got over the original so I missed this one).

Oh, well, like Charlie the Tuna, "Sorry, Charlie, StarKist is not looking for tuna with good taste but tuna that tastes good. ."
