Ellen Fullman @ the BAM L@TE series

A couple of days ago I had the pleasure of hearing, seeing and photographing Berkeley based, Ellen Fullman, during the Berkeley Art Museum's L@TE series presentation. Her performance was as riveting and visually dazzling as ever. Once again, she constructed her Long String Instrument (an instrument tuned in just intonation and played with rosin-coated fingers) to fit the space, however, this time it was even longer than when I saw her in concert in 2009 (see link below), also at one of the BAM L@TE series presentations.

Performing with Ms. Fullman on the Long-String in the first work of the program, Study for "Mary 1 and Mary 2", (first movement of Dyad, a work in 13 movements) was Ryan P. Jobes. It was a brilliant exploration of acoustic/electronic transcendental meditation.

Jobes then performed on a mechanically played electric guitar, invented by Konrad Sprenger (aka Jörg Hiller), with Ms. Fullman on the second work which was untitled. This piece ratcheted the evening up a notch very nicely.

Luciano Chessa (on Đàn bầu) and Theresa Wong (playing the Expendable Cello with Gramophone/Integrated Empathetic Bridge invented by Sung Kim) performed with Fullman in the third work, Trio Improvisation.

Ms. Wong performed with Ms. Fullman in the concert I saw in 2009 at the BAM (she used a regular cello that time).

New York Times photo by Styrous®

I was pleased when one of my photographs was used in the Art and Design section of The New York Times. It was a photo I'd taken for the Berkeley Art Museum during a concert by Ellen Fullman performing her, "Compositions for the Long String Instrument". Mrs. Fullman is an avant guard artist who works with instruments she constructs. This was one of several concerts at the museum I was asked to photograph to advertise the Friday night, L@te series.

Ellen Fullman concert @ the BAM/PFA

Last week I had the pleasure of experiencing and photographing the performance of "Compositions for the Long String Instrument" by Ellen Fullman at the Berkeley Art Museum.

The Long String Instrument is an installation of dozens of wires fifty feet or more in length, tuned in "Just Intonation" and bowed with rosin-coated fingers. Fullman began developing the instrument in 1981. She has also developed a unique notation system to choreograph the performer's movements, exploring sonic events that occur at specific nodal point locations along the string-length of the instrument. The sonic results are amazing.

The performance began in darkness with only her hands lit with small video cameras mounted on each hand. The images from the cameras were then projected on the walls of the museum.

The long, sensuous drones produced by the instrument were trance inducing, nicely accommodating the blanket & bean bag fitted audience.

When the first piece was finished, she was joined by Emily Packard on violin & Theresa Wong on cello. A trio par excellence.

Fullman was joined in the next selection by Gretchen Jude and Dave Douglas.

Attending the performance was dancer Anna Halprin whose dance troupe performed "Parades and Changes," in celebration of the inaugural opening of the Berkeley Art Museum in November 1970, almost forty years ago.
