Love and Carnations: recordings of drag artists of Barcelona (1920s-1930s)

 ~

One of the joys I have of working on my blog is the unexpected and surprising paths my research opens for me.

I was researching for a blog I'm going to post tomorrow about Zhou Xuan a Chinese singer of the twenties when I came across an entirely unrelated but very interesting and fascinating blog, Love and Carnations: recordings of drag artists of Barcelona (1920s-1930s). If it's a topic of interest to you, I wholeheartedly encourage you to check it out (link below).

Paris Olympics 1924 (Jeux de la VIIIe olympiade)

 ~

The Summer Olympics are happening at the moment, 2024, in Paris, France, 100 years after it was held there in 1924. It was interesting and fun to research the Olympic events.

The 1924 opening ceremony was held on the 5th of July. It was the second time the city had hosted the event; it was also held there from the 14th of May to the 28th of October, 1900. They were held as part of the 1900 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair).

Women took part in the games for the first time. American-born Hélène de Pourtalès became the first female Olympic champion as part of the Swiss winning team in the 1-2 ton sailing event. Two months later, Charlotte Cooper (UK) became the first woman to win an individual Olympic event after winning the women's singles tennis competition. Charlotte Cooper was the first individual female Olympic champion.

Most of the winners in 1900 did not receive medals but were given cups or trophies. This was also the only Olympic Games in history to use live animals (pigeons) as targets during the shooting event.

1924 Summer Olympics

The selection process for the 1924 Summer Olympics consisted of six bids, and Paris was selected ahead of Amsterdam, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Prague, and Rome. The cost of these Games was estimated to be 10,000,000 F (equivalent to €10.1 million in 2022.

The Olympic motto Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger) was used for the first time at the Olympics. It had been used before by the Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques, a French sporting federation whose founding members included Pierre de Coubertin. These were the first Games to have an Olympic Village.

Today is the birthday of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis who was an American writer, book editor, and socialite who served as the first lady of the United States from 1961 to 1963, as the wife of former president John F. Kennedy.

Jacqueline Lee Bouvier was born on July 28, 1929, at Southampton Hospital in Southampton, New York, to Wall Street stockbroker John Vernou "Black Jack" Bouvier III and socialite Janet Norton Lee. Her mother was of Irish descent, and her father had French, Scottish, and English ancestry.

Bouvier and Kennedy married on September 12, 1953, at St. Mary's Church in Newport, Rhode Island, in a Mass celebrated by Boston's Archbishop Richard Cushing. The wedding was considered the social event of the season with an estimated 700 guests at the ceremony and 1,200 at the reception that followed at Hammersmith Farm.

Jacqueline Kennedy endeared herself to the American public with her devotion to her family, dedication to the historic preservation of the White House, the campaigns she led to preserve and restore historic landmarks and architecture along with her interest in American history, culture, and arts. During her lifetime, she was regarded as an international icon for her unique fashion choices, and her work as a cultural ambassador of the United States made her very popular globally.

For decades I have wondered if there would ever be another woman like her in my life time, but . . . I seriously doubt it.
