Today is the birthday of Vincent Edward Zoino, better known as Vincent Edwards, who was born on July 9, 1928, in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York City, New York. His best claim to fame was as TV's Dr. Ben Casey; he also appeared in many films.

He was originally an athlete, a swimmer and a bodybuilder in the late 1940s and early 1950s and won a scholarship to Ohio State University.

He was discovered by Bing Crosby and his first acting role was the low-budget United Artists comedy Mr. Universe (1951; with Jack Carson and Bert Lahr), with Edwards portraying Tommy Tomkins, an honest wrestler who runs afoul of gangsters.

Harry Landers also was in Mr. Universe and would later appear in the Dr. Ben Casey series with Edwards.

During his acting career Edwards ventured occasionally into the recording studios and there were a number of singles released in his name. The most important one was never issued, and in 1959 Ray Peterson was credited with the first version of The Wonder of You which became an international hit for him and for Elvis Presley - however, the very first recording was made by Edwards.

Edwards recorded five albums in total but Vince Edwards Sings was the only one which charted and it spent several weeks on the top-20 Billboard LP charts in early 1962.

He was an excellent singer. with a great range and a powerful tenor voice that rang out clear and beautiful.

Vincent Edwards married actress Kathy Kersh in June 1965, but they split soon after the wedding. Their daughter was born following the divorce, and Kersh later married actor Burt Ward, 'Robin' on the ABC TV series Batman.

Darth Vader Speaks ~ David Prowse 1980 interview

“Some fans are curious about certain anatomical questions. They know I’m tall, big in stature, so they figure . . . Well, you get the idea, don't you?”

Today, July 1, is the birthday of David Prowse. In case you don't know who that is, he portrayed the physical Darth Vader in the film Star Wars.

In my life I have had many fictional heroes, Superman, Batman, Flash Gordon, James Bond, The Flash, etc. Not actually a hero, but still in this Pantheon, Darth Vader is one of them. My admiration extended to portraying Vader in my Love Act on Broadway (link below). Vader, also known by his birth name, Anakin Skywalker, is a fictional character from the Star Wars film series (link below).

Originally a Jedi prophesied to bring balance to the Force, he falls to the dark side of the Force and serves the evil Galactic Empire at the right hand of his Sith master, Emperor Palpatine (also known as Darth Sidious). He is also the father of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa, grandfather of Kylo Ren, and secret husband of Padmé Amidala.

Darth Vader was physically portrayed by David Prowse, MBE, in the original Star Wars prequel trilogy. The stunt performer Bob Anderson filled in as Vader in the lightsaber fight scenes, whereas James Earl Jones provided the voice for Vader (link below). Prowse claims he was originally told that he would be seen and heard at the end of Return of the Jedi when Vader's mask was removed. Instead, actor Sebastian Shaw was used.

Prowse was born on July 1, 1935, and is an English bodybuilder, weightlifter and character actor in British film and television. He had a role as Julian, the bodyguard of F. Alexander (Patrick Magee), in the 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. It was this film in which he was noticed by director George Lucas. His greatest fame, however, is portraying Darth Vader.

Lurking behind this sinister mask of super-villain, Darth Vader, who made a welcome reappearance in the Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, is a 6 foot, 7 inch one time British heavyweight weightlifting champion, now intent on recognition as an actor and not just a strong man.
David Prowse, who prefers to be called Dave, is a sort of mild-mannered monolith, the original gentle giant. “the trouble is,’ he said, “because of my size I get to play all sorts of weird parts, including two different monsters in two Frankenstein movies. Producers just don't think I can play an ordinary individual, even though I am married with three children.
Dave admits that the tall mysterious Darth Vader has his share of gay fans, and that several bars in London have featured a space-night during which patrons like to dress up in capes, leather and masks resembling the Vader mask. “It's what they call hi camp,” he smiles. “some gay fans write that Darth Vader is their ideal dream man, the Tall, Dark One. I guess that's because he's very powerful and forceful.

Darth Vader has become one of the most iconic villains in popular culture, and has been listed among the greatest villains and fictional characters ever. The American Film Institute listed him as the third greatest movie villain in cinema history on 100 Years... 100 Heroes and Villains, behind Hannibal Lecter and Norman Bates. However, other critics consider him a tragic hero, citing his original motivations for the greater good before his fall to the dark side.

In 2008, Prowse was one of the cast members featured in Bring Back...Star Wars by Justin Lee Collins. In the film, Prowse commented that he had a dispute with George Lucas after he allegedly leaked reports of Darth Vader's death to the press. Prowse had previously suggested that Darth Vader could be Luke Skywalker’s father in a speech he gave to UC Berkeley in 1978. However, this was shortly after the release of Star Wars and nearly two years before The Empire Strikes Back (which he considers to be his favourite of the trilogy) was released, and the script had not even been written at the time. Gary Kurtz, the producer of The Empire Strikes Back, said in the 2015 documentary I Am Your Father that Prowse's apparent plot spoiler was simply "a good guess."

Prowse claims his contract for Return of the Jedi included a share of profits on the film, and although it grossed $475 million on a $32 million budget, Prowse explained in an interview in 2009 that he has never received residuals for his performance. Due to "Hollywood accounting", the actual profits are sent as "distribution fees" to the studio, leaving nothing to distribute to others.

In July 2010, Prowse was banned by George Lucas from attending official Star Wars fan conventions. Lucas has reportedly given Prowse no reason, other than stating that Prowse "burnt too many bridges" between LucasFilm and himself. This is the subject of the mockumentary, Behind the Mask (link below).

A 2015 Spanish documentary, by filmmaker Marcos Cabotá, entitled I Am Your Father (link below), details Prowse's current life and his blackballing by LucasFilm, which the documentary suggests is unjustified. The leaks featured in the documentary originated from a technician working on the films.
Since 2002 Prowse has been an Honorary Member / Honorary Leader of the 501st Legion, a fan group dedicated to Star Wars costuming.

20,000 Vinyl LPs 93: Batman, Adam West & the Whole Gang

William West Anderson, aka Adam West, died yesterday, June 9, 2017. He was best known for his portrayal of the title role in the 1960s ABC series Batman and its theatrical feature film. I remember watching the series and even though the acting was cheesy, the sets were funky and the music was bad 60's (although Batman Blues is a great slow, mellow and sexy song), the laughs and the guest actors kept me coming back.

Burt Ward co-starred as Robin, Batman's Sidekick. When he was 19, Ward auditioned for the role of Robin. He and West were up against Lyle Waggoner and Peter Deyell for the roles of Batman and Robin, respectively. West & Ward won the roles: as bad as the acting in the finished production was, when you watch the audition, you understand why (link below). Selected for the role of Robin, Ward thought people would find Gervis (his real name with the 'G' soft, as in gentleman) hard to pronounce and adopted his mother's maiden name, Ward. He also changed the spelling of Bert to 'Burt' to add "punch".

123 episodes aired on the ABC network from January 12, 1966, to March 14, 1968. In theory, it was a crime series, however, it was campy and tongue-in-cheek. The situations were exaggerated and generally played for laughs. This increased as the seasons wore on, with the addition of ever greater absurdity. The characters, however, always took the absurd situations extremely seriously – which added to the comedy. West once said that he played Batman “for laughs, but in order to do [that], one had to never think it was funny. You just had to pull on that cowl and believe that no one would recognise you.”

Great actors of the time appeared in the series, The Joker was played by Cesar Romero, Burgess Meredith was The Penguin, Frank Gorshin was confusing as The Riddler, George Sanders was chilling as Mr. Freeze. Catwoman was played by Julie Newmar AND Eartha Kitt. Others in that rarefied star field were David Wayne as Mad Hatter, Vincent Price as Egghead, Carolyn Jones as Marsha the Queen of Diamonds, Cliff Robertson as Shame, Anne Baxter as Olga the Queen of the Cossacks and none other than Milton Berle as Louie the Lilac.

In 1966, Batman: The Exclusive Original Soundtrack Album was released on LP, featuring music by Nelson Riddle and snippets of dialogue from Adam West, Burt Ward, Burgess Meredith, Frank Gorshin, Anne Baxter (as Zelda the Great) and George Sanders (the first Mr. Freeze). The Batman Theme was included, along with titles like Batusi A Go! Go!, Batman Thaws Mr. Freeze and Batman Blues - my favorite song on the album (link below).

The Batman character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, In 1997, TV Guide ranked the episodes "The Purr-fect Crime" and "Better Luck Next Time" #86 on its list of the 100 Greatest Episodes. In 2009, "Better Luck Next Time" was ranked #72.

Batman Theme, the title song of the 1966 Batman TV series, was composed by Neal Hefti. This song is built around a guitar hook reminiscent of spy film scores and surf music. It has a twelve bar blues progression, using only three chords until the coda.

The eleven cries of "Batman!" are sung by a chorus of four tenors and four sopranos (performed by The Ron Hicklin Singers). A myth purports that the chorus is actually a group of horns. Adam West's book Back to the Batcave also fuels this rumor by claiming the chorus is instrumental, not vocal. However, Hefti stated that the chorus was made up of eight singers, one of whom jokingly wrote on his part, "word and music by Neal Hefti".

Adam West (born William West Anderson on September 19, 1928, in Walla Walla, Washington) was an American actor whose most famous role was as Batman in the 1960s ABC series Batman and its theatrical feature film. His career spanned seven decades.

He began acting in films in 1959, playing opposite Chuck Connors in Geronimo (1962) and The Three Stooges in The Outlaws Is Coming (1965). He also appeared in the science fiction film Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964), and performed voice work on The Fairly OddParents, The Simpsons, and Family Guy, playing fictional versions of himself in all three.

West participated on the speech and debate team at  Whitman College in Walla Walla. He was drafted into the United States Army where he served as an announcer on American Forces Network television. After his discharge, he moved to Hawaii to pursue television. While in Hawaii, he was picked for a role as the sidekick on a children's show called El Kini Popo Show, which featured a chimp. He later took over as star of the show; I found this very amusing. In 1959, he moved to Hollywood, where he took the stage name Adam West. In his autobiography Return to the Batcave, he explains he chose "Adam" simply because he liked the way it looked and sounded with "West", his middle name.

West made two guest appearances on Perry Mason in 1961 and 1962. His first role was in "The Case of the Barefaced Witness". His other role was as folk singer Pete Norland in "The Case of the Bogus Books". He starred in an episode of the ABC Outer Limits series titled The Invisible Enemy. He made a brief appearance in the film Soldier in the Rain with Jackie Gleason and Steve McQueen. He starred as Major Dan McCready, the ill-fated mission commander of Mars Gravity Probe 1 in the 1964 film Robinson Crusoe on Mars. In 1965, he was cast in the comedy Western The Outlaws Is Coming, the last feature film starring The Three Stooges. He played Christopher Rolf in the episode Stopover of ABC's The Rifleman, which aired on April 25, 1961.

The original Batmobile from the 1960s TV series was a concept car promoted by Ford's Lincoln brand. It was designed by Ford stylists Bill Schmidt and John Najjar and hand-built by Ghia in Turin, Italy at a cost of $250,000 (equivalent to $2,200,000 in 2017). It auctioned on January 19, 2013, at the Barrett-Jackson auction house in Scottsdale, Arizona, for $4.2 million, the second highest auction price for an auto by the house.

On June 9, 2017, Adam West died in Los Angeles, California, after a battle with leukemia. He was 88 years old.

photographer unknown

At 9pm on Thursday, June 16th, Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck joined special 'bat-guests' on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall to light the Bat-Signal in tribute to West's portrayal of millionaire and secret crime fighter Bruce Wayne.
