Just over 40 years ago, on Monday, February 8, 1983, the single Little Red Corvette by Prince was released on a 7" 45 RPM record. I began collecting 45's in the early 50's and always has had a love for them. I was really happy when it did as that track was, and still is, my favorite cut from the album 1999. It was pre-digital, for me, and I was always aware of record wear.

The story goes that Prince came up with the opening lines - "I guess I should have known, by the way you parked your car sideways, that it wouldn't last" - after falling asleep in the back of a car owned by his keyboard player Lisa Coleman.

Little Red Corvette is one of my all-time favorite dance songs. And the lyrics are pretty hot, even if it's only in  my mind.

 I guess I should've known
By the way you parked your car sideways that it wouldn't last
See, you're the kinda person that believes in makin' out once
Love 'em and leave 'em fast

I guess I must be dumb
'Cause you had a pocket full of horses
Trojan and some of them used
But it was Saturday night, I guess that makes it all right
And you say, "What have I got to lose?"
And honey, I say

Little red Corvette
Baby, you're much too fast, oh
Little red Corvette
You need a love that's gonna last

I guess I should've closed my eyes
When you drove me to the place where your horses run free
'Cause I felt a little ill when I saw all the pictures
Of the jockeys that were there before me

Believe it or not, I started to worry
I wondered if I had enough class
But it was Saturday night, I guess that makes it all right
And you say, "Baby, have you got enough gas?"
Oh, yeah

Little red Corvette
Baby, you're much too fast (yes, you are)
Little red Corvette
You need to find a love that's gonna last (oh, oh)

A body like yours oughta be in jail
'Cause it's on the verge of bein' obscene
Now move over, baby, gimme the keys
I'm gonna try to tame your little red love machine

Little red Corvette
Baby, you're much too fast
Little red Corvette, oh
Need to find a love that's gonna last

Little red Corvette
Honey, you got to slow down (got to slow down)
Little red Corvette ('cause if you don't)
You're gonna run little red Corvette right in the ground

Little red Corvette
Right down to the ground (honey, you got to slow down)
You, I've got to slow down (little red Corvette)
You're movin' much too fast, too fast
Need to find a love that's gonna last
Oh-oh, ooh-ooh-ooh

Girl, you got an ass like I never seen
And the ride
I say, the ride is so smooth
You must be a limousine

Oh, baby, you're much too fast
Little red Corvette
You need a love, you need a love that's, uh, that's gonna last
(Little red Corvette)
Babe, you got to slow down (you got to slow down)
Little red Corvette
'Cause if you don't, 'cause if you don't
You're gonna run your body right to the ground

(Right to the ground) right into the ground
(Right to the ground) right into the ground
(Right to the ground)
Little red Corvette, oh

45 RPMs 92: Prince – Sign "O" The Times

  ~

photo of record cover by Styrous®

On February 18, 1987, Prince released Sign "O" The Times, the first single of his newest album by the same name a month before the album was released. The single's cover features band member Cat Glover posing with a large heart covering her face; on the back cover she is seen posing with Prince's guitar. A popular rumor insisted that the front cover showed Prince in drag. All photo images for Sign "O" The Times, including tour book, were photographed by Jeff Katz.

Sign "O" The Times is a fantastic dance song, unfortunately, the lyrics are a withering comment on the negative state of our world as it really is.

[Intro]
Oh, yeah

[Verse 1]
In France, a skinny man died of a big disease with a little name
By chance his girlfriend came across a needle and soon she did the same
At home, there are seventeen-year-old boys and their idea of fun is being in a gang called The Disciples, high on crack, totin' a machine gun
Time
Times

[Verse 2]
Hurricane Annie ripped the ceiling off a church and killed everyone inside
You turn on the telly and every other story is tellin' you somebody died
Sister killed her baby 'cause she couldn't afford to feed it
And we're sending people to the moon
In September, my cousin tried reefer for the very first time
Now he's doing horse; it's June
Times
Times

[Chorus]
It's silly, no?
When a rocket ship explodes
And everybody still wants to fly
Some say a man ain't happy
Unless a man truly dies
Oh, why?
Time
Time

[Verse 3]
Baby, make a speech, star wars fly
Neighbors just shine it on
But if a night falls and a bomb falls
Will anybody see the dawn
Time
Times

[Chorus]
Is it silly, no?
When a rocket blows up
And everybody still wants to fly
Some say man ain't happy, truly
Until a man truly dies
Oh, why?
Oh, why?
Sign o' the times
Time
Times

[Outro]
Sign o' the times mess with your mind
Hurry before it's too late
Let's fall in love, get married, have a baby
We'll call him Nate if it's a boy
Time, times
Times, time
