October 25 is the birthday of Georges Bizet (French: [ʒɔʁʒ bizɛ], who was born in 1838, with the name Alexandre César Léopold Bizet.

Bizet was a French composer of the Romantic era and is best known for his operas in a career that was cut short by his death on June 3, 1875, at the age of thirty-six. For most of his life, Bizet had suffered from a recurrent throat complaint. A heavy smoker, he may have further undermined his health by overwork during the mid-1860s, when he toiled over publishers' transcriptions for up to 16 hours a day. In 1868, he informed his music student and friend, Edmond Galabert, that he had been very ill with abscesses in the windpipe: "I suffered like a dog". In 1871, and again in 1874, while completing Carmen, he had been disabled by severe bouts of what he described as "throat angina", and suffered a further attack in late March 1875.

He achieved very little success before his final work Carmen, which has become one of the most popular and frequently performed works in the entire opera repertoire.

However, my very favorite piece of music by him is from his first significant opera, Les pêcheurs de perles. According to musicologist Winton Dean, "Although it has a dull libretto and a laborious plot, the music rises at times "far above the level of contemporary French opera".

From Wikipedia:
Its many original flourishes include the introduction to the cavatina Comme autrefois dans la nuit sombre played by two French horns over a cello background, an effect which in the words of analyst Hervé Lacombe, "resonates in the memory like a fanfare lost in a distant forest". While the music of Les pêcheurs is atmospheric and deeply evocative of the opera's Eastern setting, in La jolie fille de Perth, Bizet made no attempt to introduce Scottish colour or mood, though the scoring includes highly imaginative touches such as a separate band of woodwind and strings during the opera's Act III seduction scene. For me, the duet, (C'est toi!) Au fond du temple saint, sung by Nadir (Nicolai Gedda), a tenor role, and Zurga (Ernest Blanc), a baritone role, has to be the most sublime male duet in the entire operatic repertoire (link below).

The aria occurs in the first act of the opera; Nadir and Zurga have run into each other after many years. They reminisce about their friendship having been derailed because of their love for the same woman, Leila, sung by Janine Micheau, and how they had each renounced their love for this woman and had sworn to remain true to each other. Now reunited, accompanied by music that is intensely dramatic and emotional, they once again affirm that they will be faithful until death. Though nothing is stated (links below), the homo-erotic undertones are astounding!!!

The aria was used in the film Gallipoli, with Roberto Servile singing baritone, (Zurga) and Bruno Lazzaretti singing tenor (Nadir). It is an Australian war drama, directed by Peter Weir, about rural Western Australian young men who enlist in the Australian Army during the First World War (link below).

Gallipoli - 1981

Gallipoli starred Mel Gibson and Mark Lee; Gibson later said that Gallipoli is, "Not really a war movie. That's just the backdrop. It's really the story of two young men." The film studies the concept of Mateship which is regarded as an Australian military virtue.
The Australian Army Recruit Training Centre lists the "soldierly qualities" it seeks to instill as including "a will to win, dedication to duty, honour, compassion and honesty, Mateship and teamwork, loyalty, and physical and moral courage."
Au fond du temple saint, by Bizet, is heard playing on Major Barton's gramophone before the final attack, drawing a parallel between the bond shared by the ill-fated soldiers of the film and the fishermen in Bizet's opera. In spite of Gibson's animosity to the gay community, which is ironic since one of the large fan bases that brought him to stardom was gay, (links below), the aria is the perfect choice for the situation. The film helped to further Gibson's career; he won the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role from the Australian Film Institute.

In 1993 another film used music from Les pêcheurs de perles. Opéra imaginaire (translates as "an opera for the imagination"). It is a 1993 French live-action animated musical anthology film, made for television. It has been compared to films like Fantasia and Allegro Non Troppo, and consists of 12 different segments, most of which are based on different popular operas (link below).

The introduction as well as the end credits utilize the Je crois entendre encore from Les pêcheurs de perles while screenshots from each of the 12 segments appear; and segment six uses Au fond du temple saint also from Les pêcheurs de perles which is sung by Nicolai Gedda and Ernest Blanc in the film as well as this recording. It is a wispy, black-and-white, rotoscoped animation depicting a condensed version of the opera's plot to its famous aria. It is directed by Jimmy T. Murakami. Opéra imaginaire was nominated for best production at the CableACE Awards in 1994.

During a brilliant student career at the Conservatoire de Paris, Bizet won many prizes, including the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1857 and he was recognized as an outstanding pianist. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, during which Bizet served in the National Guard, he had little success with his one-act opera Djamileh, though an orchestral suite derived from his incidental music to the Alphonse Daudet play, L'Arlésienne, was instantly popular. This is a brilliant work that will be a topic in a future article.

The production of Bizet's final opera, Carmen, was delayed because of fears that its themes of betrayal and murder would offend audiences. After its premiere on 3 March 1875, Bizet was convinced that the work was a failure; he died of a heart attack three months later, unaware that it would prove a spectacular and enduring success.

After his death, his work, apart from Carmen, was generally neglected. Manuscripts were given away or lost, and published versions of his works were frequently revised and adapted by other hands. After years of neglect, his works began to be performed more frequently in the 20th century. Later commentators have acclaimed him as a composer of brilliance and originality whose premature death was a significant loss to French musical theatre.

20,000 vinyl LPs 184: Erik Satie ~ The Irreverent Inspirations

~

Today, May 17, is the birthday of Erik Satie. He is predominantly remembered for his solo piano works,  Gymnopédies written in 1888 and Gnossiennes, 1889 - 97. Though they are indeed beautiful, he explored other forms of music.

This album, The Irreverent Inspirations, showcases work for piano and voice that has never been recorded before as well as his work for comedic theater, Baron Medusa's Trap, which is the real gem on this album.

His music was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd. This recording includes Le piège de Méduse ("Medusa's trap") a short play of which Satie wrote both the text and the incidental music. The text of the play was written as a "comédie lyrique or Opéra comique" in one act, February-March 1913. In June of the same year Satie added the music, a set of seven little dances, originally composed for piano. The piano version of the music was first published in 1929, a few years after his death. The orchestral score was not published until 40 years later.

The comically surrealist plot involves the elderly (and very confused) Baron Méduse (his name means Medusa in French), his daughter Frisette (to whom the Baron actually refers as his "fille de lait", which would imply that the Baron was Frisette's wet-nurse), Frisette's young suitor Astolpho, and the Baron's recalcitrant valet Polycarpe. There is also a mechanical monkey, named Jonas, dancing to the intermittent music. The nine scenes of the play develop as a funny succession of non requiters and misunderstandings, ending in an amicable hug of the protagonists.

The play was privately staged a few months after its completion in 1913, in the salons of the parents of Roland-Manuel, who played Baron Méduse's role. Later live performances of the play would become rare, although a notable one, in an English translation by M. C. Richards, took place in the summer of 1948 at Black Mountain College in North Carolina: John Cage (link below) suggested the project and played the music; Buckminster Fuller played the role of the Baron Medusa; Merce Cunningham (link below) danced the part of the mechanical monkey; Willem de Kooning designed the set and Elaine de Kooning played Frisette; and the play was directed by Arthur Penn.

The performance is spoken and sung in French. If you understand French, you're ok. If you don't, not a problem, there is a 12" by 12" libretto included with the text in French and English.

Satie wrote his absurdist play some 15 years after the first Ubu play by Alfred Jarry had been premiered in Paris. Ubu Roi was later to become the most cherished and first example of surrealism in theatre (which would develop into the Theatre of the Absurd).

The original program for the performance on August 14, 1948, of The Ruse of Medusa: a lyric comedy in one act by Erik Satie included: Buckminster Fuller, Isaac Rosenfeld, William Shrauger, Elaine de Kooning, Merce Cunningham (link below), and Alvin Charles Few. The direction was by Helen Livingston and Arthur Penn. Dance was choreographed by Cunningham and music performed by John Cage (link below).

An eccentric, Satie was introduced as a "gymnopedist" in 1887, shortly before writing his most famous compositions, the Gymnopédies. Later, he also referred to himself as a "phonometrician" (meaning "someone who measures sounds"), preferring this designation to that of "musician."

With Jean Cocteau, whom he had first met in 1915, Satie started work on incidental music for a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare, resulting in the Cinq grimaces pour Le songe d'une nuit d'été. From 1916, he and Cocteau worked on the ballet Parade, which was premiered in 1917 by the Sergei Diaghilev Ballets Russes, with sets and costumes by Pablo Picasso, and choreography by Léonide Massine. Through Picasso, Satie also became acquainted with other cubists, such as Georges Braque, with whom he would work on other, aborted, projects.

After years of heavy drinking (including consumption of absinthe), Satie died at age 59, on July 1, 1925, from cirrhosis of the liver. After his death, Satie's friends discovered his apartment in squalor and chaos. Among many other unsorted papers and miscellaneous items, it contained a large number of umbrellas, and two grand pianos placed one on top of the other, the upper instrument used as storage for letters and parcels. They discovered compositions that were either thought to have been lost or totally unknown. The score to Jack in the Box was thought, by Satie, to have been left on a bus years before. These were found behind the piano, in the pockets of his velvet suits, and in other odd places, and included Vexations; Geneviève de Brabant and other unpublished or unfinished stage works; The Dreamy Fish; many Schola Cantorum exercises; a previously unseen set of "canine" piano pieces; and several other works for piano, many untitled. Some of these would be published later as additional Gnossiennes, Pièces froides, Enfantines, and furniture music.

101 Reel-to-Reel Tapes 110: Victoria de los Ángeles ~ Carmen

~ ~ ~

I started the Vinyl LP series because I have a collection of over 20,000 vinyl record albums I am selling; each blog entry is about an album from my collection. The 101 Reel-to-Reel Tapes series is an extension of that collection. Inquire for information here.

Victoria de los Ángeles was among the first Spanish-born operatic singers to record the complete opera of Carmen in June, 1958, at the Salle Wagram, Paris, France., with tenor Nicolai Gedda and the Orchestra of the RDF conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham, using the recitatives added by Ernest Guiraud after Bizet's death. This was the only audio recording by her of Bizet's Carmen.

Carmen (French pronunciation: [kaʁmɛn]; Spanish: [ˈkarmen]) is an opera in four acts by the French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, on March 3, 1875.

As with all things music, there is one song, melody, aria, whatever, that is my very favorite. Carmen is no exception and the two "Top Hits!" are not my favorite. Nope, my favorite is the Quintette from Act 2,  Nous avons en tête une affaire! (We have in mind a bargain!).

The song starts out like most opera songs do (ho-hum) then it quietly builds up to the speed of a run-away train; staccato, syncopated and rambunctious! The harmonic gymnastics of the singers is stunning! It does quiet down for a bit but takes off again with a vengeance. It is a cross between a French Can-Can, a Gilbert & Sullivan patter song, and a cumbia. Think on that a while. :-)
(Link to the song on YouTube here, if you'd like to listen to it while you read on)

The opera bombed because of its breaking of convention and controversial main characters, which shocked and scandalized its first audiences. In its initial run at the Opéra-Comique, Carmen provoked little public enthusiasm; Carmen was often performed to half-empty houses, even when the management gave away large numbers of tickets. Early on June 3, the day after the opera's 33rd performance, Bizet died suddenly of heart disease at the age of 36. It was his wedding anniversary. That night's performance was cancelled. He would never know of its outstanding success in Vienna later that year, or that it would win enduring international acclaim within the next ten years.

Camille Du Locle brought Carmen back in November of 1875, with the original cast, and it ran for a another 12 performances until February 15, 1876, to give a year's total for the original production of 48. Among those who attended one of these later performances was Tchaikovsky, who wrote to his benefactor, Nadezhda von Meck: "Carmen is a masterpiece in every sense of the word ... one of those rare creations which expresses the efforts of a whole musical epoch". After the final performance, Carmen was not seen in Paris again until 1883.

Carmen has since become one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the classical repertoire; the Habanera from act 1 and the Toreador Song from act 2 are among the best known of all operatic arias. There is a link below to YouTube for the Toreador song from the movie, Carmen, released on  March 14, 1984, with Julia Mingenes-Johnson as Carmen, Placido Domingo as Don Jose and Ruggero Raimondi as El Matador.

The libretto

The libretto is the same size printed for regular vinyl LP records. The box for the reel-to-reel tape was smaller, so, they just folded it in half then in half again. It makes for a messy libretto but, oh, well!
Set in Seville around the year 1830, the opera deals with the love and jealousy of Don José, who is lured away from his duty as a soldier and his beloved Micaëla by the gypsy factory-girl Carmen, whom he allows to escape from custody. He is later induced to join the smugglers with whom Carmen is associated, but is driven wild by jealousy. This comes to a head when Carmen makes clear her preference for the bull-fighter Escamillo. The last act, outside the bull-ring in Seville, brings Escamillo to the arena, accompanied by Carmen, there stabbed to death by Don José, who has been awaiting her arrival (link to complete synopsis below).
