Loring Eutemey ~ vinyl LP illustrator/designer

The number of vinyl LPs I have purchased simply because of the album cover design is probably in the thousands! Loring Eutemey is one of the designers/illustrators responsible for that.

The number and variety of musicians he has designed covers for is truly amazing. At the top of the list, for me, is Iron Butterfly for their second album, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (link below). He designed the cover for My Favorite Things by John Coltrane. Then there was Wild Thing by the Troggs (originally called the Troglodytes); Sam Kinison did an absolutely hilarious send up of the song and the mood completely fits my first impression of it (link below).

One of my very favorite records is the second album by Bette Midler; Richard Amsel did the illustration, Eutemey did the design. I had never heard of Midler but when I saw the album cover, I bought it and loved the range of music on it (link below). Needless to say, I was not disappointed!

Eutemey did the cover design for the album of the Off-Broadway show,  The Golden Screw by Tom Sankey. A brilliant project but unfortunately, one few people know of (link below).

The list of the artists he has worked with goes on and on. Archie Bell & the Drells, The Young Rascals (later known as The Rascals), Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Ike Turner, Ben E. King, Herbie Mann, The Coasters, João Gilberto, Mel Torme, Acker Bilk, Solomon Burke, Esther Phillips, Leslie Uggams, Joe Tex, Eddie Harris, Donny Hathaway, Ornette Coleman, The Slow Slushy Boys, a French rock, soul, and R&B band that's been active on the underground scene from the early 90's (I love this group simply for the name) and dozens more.

Eutemey has done over four hundred album covers. Unfortunately, I do need to keep the list of the artists under control as it would be endless.

He also designed covers for books; in particular, the 1963 edition of The Black Jacobins by C. L. R.  James published by Vintage Books (link below).

I could not find the date of his birth nor an image of him but he grew up at Revere Place in Brooklyn, and graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School. After graduating from Cooper Union, where he trained as a graphic designer, he began his career at Push Pin Studios during its early days. Later he became a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, widely recognized for his distinctive album cover designs for Atlantic Records.

After a short illness, Loring Eutemey died in 2013 on the 22nd of September, in his apartment in Manhattan. He was 82 years old.

Goodbye, Little Richard!

~
date & photographer unknown

Richard Wayne Penniman (aka Little Richard) died today, Saturday, May 9, 2020. He is one of my "immortal" loves (link below) to pass on.

I will always remember hearing Tutti Frutti for the first time in 1955 when I was a teenager. What a fun and joyous song; never realized the original version of it was X-rated (John Waters link below)!

But it will always be Lucille, which came two years later in 1957, that will be my favorite song by him. However, it took me decades to find out it is, "I asked my friends about her but all their lips were tight" and not, ". . . all they did was fight", which never made sense to me! After Lucille my next favorite song by him is The Girl Can't Help It from the film of the same name. The film also introduced me to that blond bombshell, Jayne Mansfield.
He claims to be "the architect of rock and roll", and history would seem to bear out Little Richard's boast. More than any other performer – save, perhaps, Elvis Presley, Little Richard blew the lid off the Fifties, laying the foundation for rock and roll with his explosive music and charismatic persona. On record, he made spine-tingling rock and roll. His frantically charged piano playing and raspy, shouted vocals on such classics as "Tutti Frutti", "Long Tall Sally" and "Good Golly, Miss Molly" defined the dynamic sound of rock and roll.
—Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Little Richard was born on December 5, 1932, in Macon, Georgia, his father was a church deacon and a brick mason, who sold bootlegged moonshine on the side and owned a nightclub called the Tip In Inn. His mother was a member of Macon's New Hope Baptist Church.

Gifted with a loud singing voice, Penniman recalled that he was "always changing the key upwards" and that they once stopped him from singing in church for "screaming and hollering" so loud, earning him the nickname "War Hawk". As a child, he would "beat on the steps of the house, and on tin cans and pots and pans, or whatever" while singing, which annoyed neighbors.

While in high school, he got a part-time job at Macon City Auditorium for local secular and gospel concert promoter Clint Brantley. He sold Coca-Cola to crowds during concerts of star performers of the day such as Cab Calloway, Lucky Millinder, and his favorite singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

In October 1947, Tharpe overheard 14-year-old Penniman singing her songs before a performance at the Auditorium. She invited him to open her show. After the show, she paid him, inspiring him to become a professional performer.

He joined Dr. Hudson's Medicine Show in 1949; during this time he performed in drag under the name "Princess LaVonne." In 1950, he joined his first musical band, Buster Brown's Orchestra, where Brown gave him the name "Little Richard".

Disillusioned by the record business, he returned to Macon in 1954 and, struggling with poverty, settled for work as a dishwasher for Greyhound Lines.

At the suggestion of Lloyd Price, Penniman (Little Richard) sent a demo to Price's label, Specialty Records, in February 1955. In September of that year, Specialty owner Art Rupe loaned Penniman money to buy out of his Peacock contract and set him to work with producer Robert "Bumps" Blackwell. Upon hearing Penniman's demo, Blackwell felt Penniman was Specialty's answer to Ray Charles, however, Penniman told him he preferred the sound of Fats Domino. Blackwell sent him to New Orleans where he recorded at Cosimo Matassa's J&M Studios, recording there with several of Domino's session musicians, including drummer Earl Palmer and saxophonist Lee Allen.

Blackwell and Penniman went to relax at the Dew Drop Inn nightclub. According to Blackwell, Penniman then launched into a risqué dirty blues he titled Tutti Frutti. Blackwell said he felt the song had hit potential and hired songwriter Dorothy LaBostrie to replace some of Penniman's sexual lyrics with less controversial words. Recorded in three takes in September 1955, Tutti Frutti was released as a single that November and, as they say, the rest is history.

Tutti Frutti became an instant hit, reaching No. 2 on Billboard magazine's Rhythm and Blues Best-Sellers chart and crossing over to the pop charts in both the United States and overseas in the United Kingdom. It reached No. 21 on the Billboard Top 100 in America and No. 29 on the British singles chart, eventually selling a million copies.

Little Richard appeared in some of the earliest rock-and-roll movies: Don’t Knock the Rock (1956) which starred Bill Haley & His Comets (link below) . . .

. . . and The Girl Can’t Help It, which introduced me to the blond, bombshell, Jayne Mansfield (link below), (1956) and Mr. Rock and Roll (1957).

Little Richard was among the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's first class of inductees in 1986. He received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy and performed at Bill Clinton's presidential inauguration in 1992. The Library of Congress added “Tutti Frutti” to the National Recording Registry in 2010.

He was in Tullahoma, TN when it was announced that his death was related to bone cancer. He was 87 years old.

Fats Domino ~ 1987 Lifetime Achievement Award

~
On February 24, 1987, Fats Domino received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 29th annual Grammy Awards. It was two days before his birthday; what a great birthday present.

We Are The World is a charity single originally recorded by the supergroup "USA (United Support of Artists) for Africa" in 1985.  It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. The single was recorded on January 28, 1985.

The song was released on March 7, 1985, as the first single from the album. I remember when the song came out; the uplifting felling I got from the message it delivered. We are a nation that welcomes the world to come and be one with us. It was one of the times in my life I was proud to be an "American." Van Cliburn was one of those times (link below).

A worldwide commercial success, topping music charts throughout the world and becoming the fastest-selling American pop single in history. The first ever single to be certified multi-platinum, We Are The World received a Quadruple Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America.

With sales in excess of 20 million copies, it is one of fewer than 30 retail singles to have sold at least 10 million copies worldwide.

The idea for the creation of an American benefit single for African famine relief came from activist Harry Belafonte. The historic event brought together some of the most famous artists in the music industry at the time: Al Jarreau, Anita Pointer, Bette Midler, Bill Gibson, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Bob Geldof, Bruce Springsteen, Chris Hayes, Cyndi Lauper, Dan Aykroyd, Daryl Hall, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Harry Belafonte, Huey Lewis, Issa Pointer, Jackie Jackson, James Ingram, Jeffrey Osborne, John Oates, Johnny Colla, Kenny Loggins, Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes, La Toya Jackson, Lindsey Buckingham, Lionel Richie, Mario Cipollina, Marlon Jackson, Michael Jackson, Paul Simon, Randy Jackson, Ray Charles, Ruth Pointer, Sean Hopper, Sheila Escovedo, Steve Perry, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Waylon Jennings, William Robinson, Jr., Willie Nelson.

The first take had a mysterious jingling in it, so had to be redone. It was discovered the jingling was caused by the jewelry Cyndi Lauper was wearing during the recording session; leave it to Cyndi!

The album includes a 1985 charity single, Tears Are Not Enough, recorded by a supergroup of Canadian artists, under the name Northern Lights (Canadian All Stars). It was recorded to raise funds for relief of the 1983–85 famine in Ethiopia.

Both songs were part of a series of such supergroup singles recorded between December 1984 and April 1985, along with Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid in the United KingdomCantaré, cantarás by a supergroup of Latin American and Spanish singers, Éthiopie by Chanteurs sans Frontières in France, and Les Yeux de la faim by Fondation Québec-Afrique in Quebec.
