On October 6, 1982, The musical Cats opened at the Wintergarden Theatre located at 1634 Broadway between 50th and 51st streets in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. In 1997 the show became the longest running show in Broadway history and as of 2019, it remains the fourth-longest-running Broadway show and the sixth-longest-running West End show.

The London production ran for 21 years and 8,949 performances, while the Broadway production ran for 18 years and 7,485 performances, making Cats the longest-running musical in both theatre districts for a number of years. There are many foreign productions which include a 15-year run at the Operettenhaus in Hamburg that played over 6,100 performances, as well as an ongoing run in a purpose-built theatre in Japan that has played over 10,000 performances since it opened in 1983.

Cats turned out to be an unprecedented commercial success, with a worldwide gross of US$3.5 billion by 2012.

Cats is a sung-through musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the 1939 poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. It tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make the "Jellicle choice" by deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside layer and come back to a new life.

One of the cats, Grizabella, “the Glamour Cat” who once led a more glamorous life and now that she is older, she struggles to be accepted back into the tribe of Jellicle cats. The role is played by Elaine Paige, who sings the show-stopper, Memory, written by Cats director Trevor Nunn and lyricist Richard Stilgoe; one of the most beautiful and bittersweet songs ever written (link below).

Memory

Daylight
See the dew on the flower
And a rose that is fading
Roses whither away
Like the sunflower
I yearn to turn my face to the dawn
I am waiting for the day . . .

Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Every streetlamp
Seems to beat a fatalistic warning
Someone mutters
And the streetlamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I musn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
The streetlamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning

Touch me
It's so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me
You'll understand what happiness is

Look
A new day has begun

45 RPMs 62: Michael Damian ~ Rock On with 12"

Today is the birthday of rocker, Michael Damian, born on April 26, 1962, in Bonsall, California. Damian did a FANTASTIC cover of one of my all-time favorite songs, Rock On by David Essex.

I have always loved covers of songs when they are done with thought and care, however, the original version is the one I always love the best. I guess it's a case of "First Love". But in this situation I actually love Damian's better! That's saying a whole lot! His bass guitar reverberating in the opening drives me wild then there's the subtle Reggae beat that emerges at times. WOW!

Rock On is a tribute to the early days of rock 'n' roll, with mentions of the 1956 Carl Perkins classic Blue Suede Shoes (which I love much better than Presley's) and the 1958 Eddie Cochran hit Summertime Blues. Twenty years later Cochran would be mentioned again in the New Wave song, Thank You by Chrisma.

Rock On was originally meant to be the "B" side but in an interview to Circus he stated:
"I said 'No!' I've had three years of people telling me what I should do.' But when 'Rock On' came out I was actually surprised it did so well. It was very sweet success because it was exactly what I wanted - the song, the production, the attitude - it's one of my favorite records, no matter whether I recorded it."
I have loved covers of songs when they are done with care, however, the original version is the one I always love the best; a "First Love" syndrome. In this case, I love the cover better! That's saying a lot about this song!

There have been many other covers of the Essex song, The Dave Howard Singers did a pretty outrageous, almost punk cover and Blondie came in with a really nice, laid back version of the song in 2012. Def Leppard did a bitchin' version of the song in 2005; it's the only cover they've done in concert. Then in 2017, Rickie Lee Jones and Madeleine Peyroux recorded a fantastic and politically charged video of the song in support of women's rights (links below).

After a 1981 appearance on American Bandstand in support of his debut single, a cover of the Eric Carmen tune She Did It, Damian was offered the part of struggling singer, Danny Romalotti, on the daytime television series The Young and the Restless in which he appeared for twelve years.

He also had the starring role in the 1993 Broadway production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Playbill - 1993

Damian has released five albums with eight top 40 hits, including his number-one cover of the David Essex song Rock On (from the Dream a Little Dream soundtrack), which was certified gold in 1989. He also won a BMI Song-writing Award for his hit single Was It Nothing at All.

While researching for this article I discovered Damian is a fan of actress/singer Julie London who introduced the 1953 song, Cry Me A River, written by Arthur Hamilton. I'm with him on that!

Rock On lyrics

[Intro]
Ooh
Shoow

[Verse 1]
Hey kid, rock and roll
Rock on, ooh, my soul
Hey kid, you boogie too, did ya?
Hey shout, summertime blues
Jump up and down in them blue suede shoes
Hey did you rock and roll?
Rock on

[Bridge]
And where do we go from here?
Which is the way that's clear?

[Verse 2]
Still looking for that blue jean, baby queen
Prettiest girl I ever seen
See her shake on the movie screen
Jimmy Dean
James Dean

And where do we go from here?
Which is the way that's clear?

20,000 vinyl LPs 164: archy, mehitabel & Carol

~
Carol Channing died this morning; once again, it was a shock to me to realize that one of my idols was not going to live forever!

My first awareness of her was in the late fifties with this recording, archy and mehitabel - a back-alley opera

archy and mehitabel - a back-alley opera, began in 1954 as a Columbia Records concept album with Marquis' original title, featuring Eddie BrackenCarol Channing, and David Wayne. The use of lower case for the names is intentional as the character, archy, is a cockroach who can only type one letter at a time by jumping from the top of the typwriter to the key typing one letter at a time; forget using the shift key for capital letters.

archy and mehitabel are the names of two fictional characters created in 1916, by Don Marquis, a columnist for The Evening Sun newspaper in New York City. Archy, a cockroach, and Mehitabel, an alley cat, appeared in hundreds of humorous verses and short stories in Marquis’ daily column, "The Sun Dial". Their exploits were first collected in the 1927 book archy and mehitabel, which remains in print today, and in two later volumes, archys life of mehitabel (1933) and archy does his part (1935). Many editions are recognized by their iconic illustrations by George Herriman, the creator of Krazy Kat.

Channing is at the beginning of her career; she is young, pretty and delightful as the ever upbeat (usually), frivolous and forever optimistic, Mehitabel; her leit motif is,”toujour gai”, always happy! Which she sings several times, even when things are not really so very  happy!

A musical version, this recording, of the Archy and Mehitabel materials was recorded July 7, 1953 and April 9, 1954, entitled archy and mehitabel with Carol Channing as Mehitabel and Eddie Bracken as Archy, and narrated by David Wayne, with Percival Dove as Bill, the fierce tomcat. It was followed by echoes of archy, narrated by David Wayne, recorded August 31, 1954. The credits read: Words - Joe Darion, Music - George Kleinsinger. It was originally released as Columbia Masterworks ML 4963 in 1955.

The opera is recorded on one side, with a sequel, Echoes Of Archy, was recorded on side 2. It tells the tale of life after archy has gone.

That same year a concert version was presented by the Little Orchestra Society at The Town Hall in New York City. With an expanded book, the addition of several lengthy ballet sequences, and a cast of animal characters, the rechristened Shinbone Alley preceded Cats by a couple of decades and was a precursor of the far more successful Andrew Lloyd Webber hit. It was one of the first Broadway shows to feature a fully integrated cast.

On May 16, 1960, an abridged version of the musical was broadcast under the original title archy & mehitabel as part of the syndicated TV anthology series Play of the Week presented by David Susskind. The cast included Bracken, Tammy Grimes, and Jules Munshin.

The story was made into an animated film musical in 1970, entitled, Shinbone Alley (link below),  about a suicidal poet Archy (Eddie Bracken) who tries to end his life by jumping off a bridge, but awakens to find he has assumed the life of a cockroach and has become a part of a community of creatures living in a newspaper office. He also discovers that he can still write poetry, using a typewriter, and begins to enjoy his new life. Archy develops deep feelings for the lovely but self-destructive cat Mehitabel (Carol Channing), but will have to fight to win her from bad-boy tomcat Bill (Alan Reed, who was later to become, Fred Flintstone).
