20,000 vinyl LPs 308: Angel Heart ~ Mickey Rourke & Robert De Niro

~
Angel Heart movie poster

Today, September 16, is the birthday of Mickey Rourke, an actor who seemed to specialize in weird film roles but his weirdest role has to be as Harry Angel in Angel Heart, a 1987 American neo-noir psychological horror film which was an adaptation of the William Hjortsberg 1978 novel Falling Angel.

Written and directed by Alan Parker, the film stars Rourke in the lead role, with Robert De Niro, Lisa Bonet and Charlotte Rampling. Angel Heart is not for the timid, it is graphic, grim, grisly and gruesome but it is brilliant and profound.

De Niro himself is no stranger to bizarre roles as witness the paranoid Taxi Driver in 1976 and the self-destructive and obsessive boxer, Jake LaMotta (link below), in the 1980 film Raging Bull.

Robert De Niro appears as Louis Cyphre (read: Lucifer, the devil incarnate). He is suave, impeccably dressed, sinister, dangerous and completely evil.

American folk music and Piedmont blues singer and guitarist, Brownie McGhee, appears in the film as Toots Sweet. After Angel uses force to try to extract details of Favorite's last known whereabouts, Toots refers him back to Margaret Krusemark (Charlotte Rampling). The following morning, police detectives inform Harry that Toots has been murdered.

William Hjortsberg also wrote the screenplay for the 1985 Ridley Scott film, Legend, which starred Tom Cruise and Tim Curry. Now, there's a bizarre teaming!

Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford were originally considered for the role of Harry Angel. Parker began meeting with actors for the lead role of Harry Angel. After meeting Rourke and walking the streets of New York through the night with him, Rourke declared that Parker should stop looking for other actors, the role was his. Impressed by Rourke’s confidence, Parker made him his Angel.

Harry Angel (Rourke), a New York City private investigator, is hired to solve the disappearance of a man known as Johnny Favorite. His investigation takes him to New Orleans, where he becomes embroiled in a series of brutal murders. The key to everything is "heart" in every form of its meaning and perception. It is not a pretty film; it gets gritty and graphic in every way possible. But it is a great film and one not to be missed. I do not want to give away anything but there is a blog that tells all, if you are into spoilers (link below)

The score was produced and composed by Trevor Jones, with saxophone solos by British jazz musician Courtney Pine. Jones composed the score electronically on a Synclavier. In it director Alan Parker chose to reference the 1937 song, Girl of My Dreams by Glen Gray.

Saxophonist Pine utilized an Echoplex much as Stan Getz did on his 1978 song, Another World in which he referenced Alice Blue Gown by Joseph McCarthy and Harry Tierney.

Alan Parker also directed Bugsy Malone, a 1976 gangster musical comedy which featured only child actors playing adult roles. The cast included Jodie Foster, Scott Baio and John Cassisi. He also directed the 1978 film Midnight Express, written by Oliver Stone, based on the Billy Hayes 1977 non-fiction book Midnight Express. It featured Brad Davis and John Hurt.

Midway through the film there is a very weird scene with a sexy Louisiana Voodoo Queen, Lisa Bonet who has the female lead as Epiphany Proudfoot. Proudfoot had an affair with Johnny Favorite, the man Johnny Angel is searching for. Confused? Well, that's the aim of the film!

The book, Falling Angel, was also adapted into an opera by J. Mark Scearce to a libretto by Lucy Thurber. Titled Falling Angel, it premiered at the Brevard Music Center on June 30, 2016.

20,000 vinyl LPs 267: U. K. Squeeze ~ Take Me I'm Yours on red vinyl

Julian (Jools) Miles Holland was born on this date in 1958. He was an original member of the band Squeeze and has worked with many artists including Jayne County, Sting, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, George Harrison, David Gilmour, Magazine, The The and Bono.

I have hundreds of albums I have bought over the years only because of the album cover. This is one of them; well, also because it was pressed as a limited edition on red vinyl.

I took the record home and slapped it on the turntable. I liked the songs well enough but when it got to the last cut on the first side . . . I was dubfounded! Take Me I'm Yours started playing and I was completely blown away!

Take Me I'm Yours was written by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook. Difford later named the song one of the only tracks on the album that was representative of Squeeze. The song has been covered several times, including a unique take by Tim Curry on his 1981 album Simplicity. Curry's version is the same tempo but it is more sensual with an almost jungle feeling to it. Andrea Corr covered it on her album Ten Feet High. Her version is a tiny bit slower in tempo but is more electronic rock. Both versions are great (links below).

Take Me I'm Yours

I've come across the desert
To greet you with a smile
My camel looks so tired
It's hardly worth my while
To tell you of my travels
Across the golden East
I see your preparations
Invite me first to feast

Take me I'm yours
Because dreams are made of this
Forever there'll be a heaven in your kiss

Amusing belly dancers
Distract me from my wine
Across Tibetan mountains
Are memories of mine
I've stood some ghostly moments
With natives in the hills
Recorded here on paper
My chills and thrills and spills

Take me I'm yours
Because dreams are made of this
Forever there'll be a heaven in your kiss

It's really been some welcome
You never seem to change
A grape to tempt your leisure
Romantic gestures strange
My eagle flies tomorrow
It's a game I treasure dear
To seek the helpless future
My love at last I'm here

Take me I'm yours
Because dreams are made of this
Forever there'll be a heaven in your kiss

Squeeze is an English rock band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording in the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. In the UK, their singles Cool for Cats, Up the Junction and Labelled with Love were top-ten chart hits. Though not as commercially successful in the United States, Squeeze had American hits with Tempted, Hourglass and 853-5937, and were considered a part of the Second British Invasion.

This, their first album, was produced by John Cale for A&M Records. Cale had been a member of Velvet Underground from whose album Squeeze took their name. However, the debut album's two hit singles, Take Me I'm Yours and Bang Bang were produced by the band themselves, as the label found Cale's recordings were not commercial.

Jools left the UK group, Squeeze in 1982 to pursue a solo career having released the album, Jools Holland & His Milionaires. Bumble Boogie was featured on the US release of this album in 1982. A UK 45 was released on A&M in 1981. Despite the writing credits on the label, the song was based on a theme by Rimsky Korsakov, Flight of the Bumble Bee which appeared in his opera, The Tale of Tsar Saltan in 1900. In the rock and roll era, B Bumble & The Stingers reached #21 on the Hot-100 with their version of Bumble Boogie in 1961 (link below).

The Rocky Horror Picture Show 15th Anniversary Box Set was a collection released by Ode Sounds and Visuals in 1990 that was distributed in the US by Rhino Records on CD and cassette for the 15th Anniversary of the release of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The collection containes 4 discs: The Rocky Horror Picture Show Original Soundtrack Album, The Original Roxy Cast Album plus two unique and new compilations that appeared only in the set. The box is in 12" x 12" format, and comes with a colorful booklet with liner notes, photos and a special note written by Richard O'Brien.

Rocky Horror International (A Collection Of Rocky Horror Tracks From Around The World) put together all the songs on the soundtrack in their original order, taken from other cast albums. At the time, much of the material was scarce. As a nod to fans, two songs that had been left off the original Movie soundtrack LP were included for the first time anywhere; The Sword of Damocles and Planet Schmanet, Janet plus the legendary, cut-from-the-movie Once In A While, performed by Barry Bostwick. Before the release of the 15th Anniversary Box Set, Once In A While was only rumored to exist. At the time of the set’s release, none of the songs included had appeared on CD.

Songs From The Vaults (A Collection Of Rocky Horror Rarities) is a compilation of rarities from the cast members. Songs from Shock Treatment are also included, as the LP was long out of print and had not yet been issued on CD. Four solo tracks recorded by Tim Curry in the mid-70s from what would have been his first LP, had it been released. The songs Baby Love and Just 14 had been released as a single on Ode Records, though had extremely limited reach. Early singles by Kimi and Ritz (Richard O’Brien and then wife, and Transylvanian, Kimi Wong) were intended to be included, but were denied by their license holders.

Lou Adler oversaw the project as Executive Producer. Howard Frank produced the set, and Lisa Kurtz Sutton served as Art Director for the package, and also wrote the liner notes and complied the two rarities collections.
The fishnet background on the box front and throughout the box were a Photostat of the first pair of fishnets that Sutton wore as a cast member of The Rocky Horror Revue and The Tiffany Troupe during the 1970's.

A large 12' x 12' image of the cover art was displayed in front of Tower Records on the Sunset Strip for close to two months in fall of 1990, to advertise the release.
