In the late '90's, I would go downtown from one of the Mission Street BART stations. In the cavernous underground entrance, street musicians would perform. This is where I first encountered Thoth. Each encounter was an amazing experience; he would sing, play the violin and with bells around his ankles, dance; all at the same time. Not only that but he sang in a language he created, the language of the Festad, a mythical people and land in his "Solopera", a one-man opera. And he sang all the roles including the female ones. His magnificent voice ranges from a deep baritone to a brilliant countertenor. It was a mind blower, to be sure.

I saw him perform many times and on one occasion I bought this CD album, Tone Poems of the Festad; it was just as amazing to listen to it as it was to watch him perform. I subsequently bought many of his other albums but the first one I bought, The Herma (see link below), is my favorite.

There is a review on Amazon of this CD by that does it far better justice than I can. I have included excerpts from his review but if you would like to see the complete one, there is a link to it below.

Review of Thoth ~ Tone Poems of the Festad by :
An amazing musician, an amazing, performer, an amazing dancer, an amazing street artist who performs in the tunnel in Central Park in New York! His music is a pure creation of his mixed roots and origins. His father was a Jewish doctor and his mother a Barbudan musician and dancer. That mixture of two ethnic origins, two cultures, two worlds in one man is fascinating.
He is all rhythm and he is all pitch and he is all tempo and he is all music. He is absolutely able to jump from his normal tenor voice to the falsetto voice of his infancy that he has kept intact in spite of the growing and maturing that kills that voice in a man. You will not understand the language because S.K. THOTH seems to have invented it from the various languages he used to listen to, hear and learn and he still knows. What he is trying to do is to build a full and different world only with music and a voice and that he can do, he knows how to do. His violin can compete with the best Bohemian or Yiddish violins on any skyscraper roof in any big metropolis-like universal global city.

The reverberation of some notes, the sobbing of some others, the two voices of one artist who is both man and woman, lover and lover, beloved and beloved, merge without disappearing, without being overflowed into the very sad and nostalgic musical landscape.

about Thoth

Thoth was born Stephen Kaufman in New York City around 1956. His father was a Russian Jew, and his mother was from Barbados. His mother was the first African-American timpani player for the New York City Opera, and Thoth was exposed to classical music at a young age. His mother's connections allowed him access to education from professional musicians, among them Harry Glickman, longtime violinist with the NBC Orchestra. Kaufman holds a degree in comparative literature from San Francisco State University

In 1987, he began busking under the name S.K. Thoth. In 1991, he formed a band called “THOTH” with Michael Chiaravelotti. After the band dissolved in 1998, Thoth began performing solo and created an original epic opera, THE HERMA: The Life and Land of Nular-in based on a mythical land called the Festad which he has been writing about since a child (see link below).

In 1999, Thoth moved to NYC where he continued writing and performing the opera at the Bethesda Terrace Arcade, a place he dubbed the Angel Tunnel. He claims that “THE HERMA” is the first new opera of the millennium having been created and recorded from 1999-2002. In 2001, director Sarah Kernochan made a documentary short about his life called  “THOTH” which won the 2002 Academy Award.

Thoth in Barcelona ~ Déjà vu all over again

CD cover detail

I have written several times of how many cycles of my life have come full circle in the last few years. Today, marks the fifth anniversary of one of those cycles not completing nor resolving anything but coming back to me with a fact I just discovered a few days ago. Life is strange, indeed.

In the late '90's, I would go downtown from one of the Mission Street BART stations. In the cavernous, usually not-quite-dim underground entrance, street musicians would perform. This is where I first encountered Thoth. Each encounter was an amazing experience; he would sing, play the violin and with bells around his ankles, dance; all at the same time. Not only that, in his "Soloperas", a one-man opera, he sang in a language he created, the language of the Festad, a mythical people and land. As if that wasn't enough, he sang all the parts of the opera: young, old, male and female. His magnificent voice ranges from a sonorous baritone to a rich countertenor. It was a mind blower to watch him perform, to be sure.

I saw his performances many times; the first time I bought one of his CD albums, The Herma. I got it home and discovered it is just as amazing to listen to it as it is to watch it performed. I subsequently bought several of his other albums each time I saw him but The Herma (see link below) is my love; perhaps that is because it was the first of his CDs I bought. Your first love is always the one you remember.

Flash forward 15 or so years later, five years ago today, on October 12th, 2010, I was in Barcelona rushing down Carrer de Bonsucces when I passed the entrance to Plaça de Vicenç Martorell . . .

. . . and to my complete astonishment, there was Thoth singing, playing his violin and dancing with all his heart!

This time an exotically beautiful woman was performing with him. What a superb team they made! Visually she was the total opposite of Thoth. I was delighted and excited to see he had found a fellow performer that matched his flair!

I was in a hurry and got these quick shots as I passed them but nothing more. It was in the middle of their performance; I didn't have time to wait for them to finish and I figured, as in San Francisco, he would make another appearance there or somewhere in Barcelona and I could get some better shots. Unfortunately, I never ran into them again so that didn't happened.

I found out just a few days ago (the cycle completing) who the woman with him was. She is Lila'Angelique, a coloratura soprano and an exceptional violinist. Lila'Angelique became Thoth's protege in 2009. They began traveling the world on November 17th 2009 and have been performing throughout the world ever since. They got married last year on May 17th, 2014.

I wish them a lifetime of love and happiness.

From the 70's to the '90's, I would use one of the Mission Street BART stations in San Francisco. In the cavernous underground entrances, street musicians would perform. This is where I first encountered Thoth. Each encounter was an amazing experience; he would speak, sing, play the violin and with bells around his ankles, dance complex rhythms; all at the same time. He sang in a language he created, the language of the Festad, a mythical people and land he also created and was the subject of his "Solopera", The Herma, a one-man opera. And he sang all the roles including the female ones. His magnificent voice ranged from a brazen, guttural baritone to a dazzling countertenor. It was a mind blower, to be sure.

The first time I saw him, I bought this CD album, The Herma; it is amazing and I was hooked. I subsequently bought several of his other albums but the Herma is my love; perhaps that is because it was my first album by him. Your first love is always the one you remember.

And, of course, this album has a cut that is my favorite. It is Homio from Scene 4. At not even 2 minutes, it is one of the most striking pieces of music I have ever heard. It is a lilting but robust waltz with violin, bells and Thoth vocals ranging up, down, over and everywhere in every vocal range imaginable from all the various roles. He performs an extended version of the song on YouTube (link to aria on YouTube).

Stephen Kaufman chose the name of Thoth, an ancient Egyptian deity because he perceived Egypt to historically be "the center for mixed races". Thoth began "prayforming" this one man opera in San Francisco, and then New York. Thoth was the subject of the Academy Award winning documentary Thoth. Kaufman holds a degree in comparative literature from San Francisco State University.

The Herma: Act One

The Herma: Act One is based upon metaphorical legends from the mythological world of the Festad - a land about which Thoth has been writing since he was a child.
