Today is the birthday of New Wave musician Robert Görl who, with Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López, was a member of the German electropunk/Neue Deutsche Welle band formed in 1978, from Düsseldorf, Germany, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF).
Although this is their third studio album, it is the first one of theirs I heard and it blew me away! Sato Sato
kicks it all off and I remember so well my hearing it for the first
time! Funny how so many songs have "Remember where I was?" attachments.
The album was released in 1981 and was the band's first album on Virgin Records. It includes the hit single Der Mussolini. The album was a massive hit in Germany, where it charted for 46 weeks.
Giorgio Moroder did a re-mix of the song and the video for it is SO much fun to watch (link below)!
You have to pay close attention, though, as the visuals are VERY subtle
but brilliant!
However, electrifying Delgado-López's vocal waters it down so it's
almost sterile and it doesn't have the raw sound of his vocal that I
love in the
original.

Rote Lippen
is a REAL doozy! After figuring out it meant "Red Lips" I was expecting
something erotically tinged but I was not ready for this! It is really
NASTY sounding! But then the vocal with an almost disgusting guttural
clearing of the throat and sinister overtones whirles around you and it
becomes the height of romanticism! Punk/New Wave at its best!!!!

Robert Görl was born on June 15, 1955, in Munich, Germany and started his life in an orphanage. At the age of 18, Görl got drum lessons from the jazz musician Freddie Brocksieper. In 1974 he started a classical music education at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg and in 1976 at the University of Graz, also devoting himself to jazz. In 1978, he interrupted his studies, went to London and became interested in punk rock. In the same year, he met Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López in Düsseldorf and formed DAF. Görl also played in other bands such as Der Plan.

In 1984, Robert Görl recorded his first solo album Night Full of Tension (Mute Rec), working with New Wave Diva Annie Lennox.

The album Alles ist gut (all is good) received the German Schallplattenpreis award by the Deutsche Phono-Akademie (The German Phono-Academy), an association of the German recording industry in 1982.
The D.A.F. track Alle Gegen Alle was remade by Laibach in 1994. Der Mussolini was remade by Atrocity in 1997 and by KMFDM in 2006. The Patrik Sampler 2017 novel The Ocean Container makes reference to Greif Nach Den Sternen.

Last week was the birthday of David Ian "Joe" Jackson. He was born on August 11 in 1954. To celebrate this event, I've selected the I'm the Man album and because of its layout design, I have entered it in the “Just the cover, ma’am!” vinyl LP category (link below).
On the album cover, Jackson appears in the guise of a particular type of petty criminal known in the United Kingdom as a spiv, a character who, in Jackson's own words, "always wears a gross polka-dot tie and a pencil-thin mustache, and he's always trying to sell you a watch or something like that real cheap. I think people always want to put a label on what you do, so I thought I'd be one step ahead of them and invent one myself - spiv rock." Jackson later explained, that the spiv character is "a silly image that I thought appalling. It's not intended to be a new musical revolution
The interesting thing is the sleeves of each of the 5 45s has a different image on it . . .

This
is the second vinyl LP album by Jackson released in 1979. There was
also this 45 RPM (box set) version which is the complete vinyl LP album
released
as 5 x 7"-singles in a 7"-box.
The box set included a 12¼" x 18¾" poster with an elongated Jackson image.
The interesting thing is the sleeves of each of the 5 45s has a different image on it . . .
When they are arranged in the proper order they form the image on the
poster. Pretty cool, eh? The packaging is ALL this article is about. So,
this is the reason why even though it is a 45 RPM, it's going in the “Just the cover, ma’am!” vinyl LP category.
