Band Aid ~ Do They Know It's Christmas? No longer powerful?

 ~
Band Aid - November 2016

After publishing an article earlier this month on the song, Do They Know It's Christmas? by the supergroup, Band Aid (link below), I came across a disappointing interview regarding the song.

The song was re-recorded and re-issued four times, Band Aid II in 1998, Band Aid 20 in 2004 and  Band Aid 30 in 2014. A German-language version of Do They Know It's Christmas? was released on November 21, 2014. It was produced by Vincent Sorg and Tobias Kuhn and features vocals from artists including 2raumwohnung, Andreas Bourani, Die Toten Hosen, Jan Delay, Joy Denalane, Max Raabe, Milky Chance, Peter Maffay, Silbermond, Thees Uhlmann, and Wolfgang Niedecken.

Four years ago, Midge Ure was interviewed by the multimedia news agency, Press Association (link below) and he said:
“I’m not sure music is the answer to it now. Thirty one years ago we did the Band Aid thing, it was the vehicle that people understood – you didn’t have videogames, you didn’t have mobile phones and you didn’t have all of the distractions that you have today”.

Back then “music was the be all and end all” he added, “so we used the medium at its peak. We used the power that music had at its peak. Maybe right now, the answer wouldn’t be a concert or a record – but I don’t know what the answer is”.

The world, times, people, fashion and fads change, not always for the better but in spite of it, we have to go on.

The song was written by by Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats and Midge Ure of Ultravox fame in reaction to television reports of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia.

It was first recorded in a single day on November 25, 1984, by Band Aid, a supergroup put together by Geldof and Ure and consisting mainly of the biggest British and Irish musical acts at the time. The group's name stemmed from the idea that the musicians were providing aid to the less fortunate and suggested that their project was likened to putting a band-aid on a wound. It depicts the poverty-stricken African scenery of the time. Lyrics of the song included a description of the country saying, "where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow, do they know it's Christmas time at all?"

Geldorf wrote the lyrics and Ure wrote the music. The 12" version was mixed by Trevor Horn. The single was released in the United Kingdom on December 3, 1984.

In 1986 the original music video from Do They Know It's Christmas? won Band Aid a Grammy Award nomination for Best Music Video, Short Form.

The Band Aid project has inspired many other charity records around the world (link below).

Today is the birthday of Midge Ure, one of the strongest and best male voices of the New Wave music era who sang in the groups Visage and Ultravox.

The Gift was his first solo album after Ultravox disbanded in 1988. on the Caribbean island of Montserrat using a Casio CZ-101.

I love this album and my favorite cuts are actually the three instrumentals. The Chieftain is fast, furious, a bit raucous but in a controlled New Wave way. I love it.

Of the instrumentals my very favorite cut is Edo; It is slow, sensual and dreamy but grand at the same time and the Japanese flavor provided by the koto is sublime.

Because of that flavor it was the perfect piece of music for one of the Obiko fashion shows I produced for Sandra Sakata (links below).

"I like instrumental music.
I find it very easy to listen to and it allows you to use your imagination
in a way that most pop music doesn't. It's refreshing."
