On Monday, August 3, 1970, the film Performance was released in the U.S. It was the first movie Mick Jagger acted in and it was a doozy of a performance by him.        

 

From Wikipedia:

Performance is a 1970 British crime drama film directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, written by Cammell and filmed by Roeg. The film stars James Fox as a violent and ambitious London gangster who, after killing an old friend, goes into hiding at the home of a reclusive rock star (Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones).       

The film was produced in 1968 but not released until 1970, as Warner Bros. was reluctant to distribute the film, owing to its sexual content and graphic violence. 

Ever notice how illicit items become so overwhelming attractive? Way to go Censors! Nothing like the scent of forbidden fruit! Of course the poster for the film subtly oozed a world of sin.

Then the trailer for the film amped it to Heaven! Or was it Hell? It's frenetic, bizarre & violent at times. Decide for yourself; it's on YouTube llink below).              

 

Performance is a very dark tale about swinging London as the 60s began to decay and explores the relationship between sex and violence that revolted critics and the public. Marlon Brando was originally chosen to play the gangster role that Fox took over.            

The music personnel for the soundtrack is amazing! It featured Ry Cooder, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Bernard Krause, Jack Nitzsche, Randy Newman and many more. Coder is at his very best.

The lyrics of "Memo From Turner" were re-written for this film and therefore different than on the Rollings Stones' Metamorphosis LP from 1975.
According to Colin McCabe (in his book "Performance"), the Moog synthesizer was so new that none were commercially available and a prototype was used for these recordings in 1968 by Bernie Krause.

Today, July 26, is the birthday of Mick Jagger. My, oh, my! I remember when he was just a skinny kid; he's still skinny but he's no kid, he is 80 years old today! He was born and grew up in Dartford, England, and studied at the London School of Economics before abandoning his studies to join The Rolling Stones.     

Jagger is the frontman and one of the founder members of the Stones. He and guitarist Keith Richards have written most of the band's songs together; their songwriting partnership is one of the most successful in history. His career has spanned over six decades, and he has been widely described as one of the most popular and influential frontmen in the history of rock music. His distinctive voice and energetic live performances, along with Richards' guitar style, have been the Stones' trademark throughout the band's career. Jagger gained notoriety for his romantic involvements and illicit drug use, and has often been portrayed as a countercultural figure.              

 

The 1967 album, Between the Buttons, was considered largely unsuccessful commercially but up to that point, I thought it was fantastic! Keith Richards claims in his 2010 memoir Life that “none of us wanted to make [Satanic Majesties], but it was time for another Stones album, and Sgt. Pepper’s was coming out, so we thought basically we were doing a put-on.” Even Rolling Stone Magazine does not give it high value (links below) but I loved it!         

In the 2000s, Jagger co-founded a film production company, Jagged Films, and produced feature films through the company beginning with the 2001 historical drama Enigma. In the late 1960s, Jagger starred in the films Performance (1970) and Ned Kelly (link below) (1970), to mixed receptions. Beginning in the 1980s, he released a number of solo works, including four albums and the single Dancing in the Street, a 1985 duet with David Bowie that reached No. 1 in the UK and Australia and was a top-ten hit in other countries.        

In 1989, Jagger was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and, in 2004, into the UK Music Hall of Fame with the Rolling Stones. As a member of the Rolling Stones and as a solo artist, he reached No. 1 on the UK and US singles charts with 13 singles, the top 10 with 32 singles and the top 40 with 70 singles. In 2003, he was knighted for his services to popular music. The genus Jaggermeryx naida and the type species Aegrotocatellus jaggeri are named for him.

As with all albums I have loved, I have favorites. Topping the list is In Another Land. It features an electronic-watery sounding vocal that is very trippy. The follow up is 2000 Light Years from Home. Now THIS is definitely in the trippy category!           

The album, the strange result of a bizarre set of personal, professional, and cultural circumstances, was reissued for its 50th anniversary in 2017 (link below).       

 

Of course, they couldn't be content with labeling the record as side 1 and side 2; they are labeled 'front side' and 'back side'.

On May 12th in 1972, the Rolling Stones released their album, Exile on Main St. It was the band's tenth studio album released in the United Kingdom, as well as their twelfth American album.

Recording for the album began in 1969 in England during sessions for Sticky Fingers (link below) and continued in the summer of 1971 at a rented villa in the South of France named Nellcôte.

A collage of various images, the album's artwork, according to frontman Mick Jagger, reflects the Stones as "runaway outlaws using the blues as its weapon against the world", showcasing "feeling of joyful isolation, grinning in the face of a scary and unknown future"; forty-nine years later the future is even more scary and unknown.

The photographs used on the album were by Swiss-American photographer and documentary filmmaker, Robert Frank. His most notable work, the 1958 book titled The Americans (link below), earned Frank cudos for his fresh and nuanced outsider's view of American society.

Richards' substance abuse frequently prevented him from attending the sessions that continued in his basement, while Jagger and Wyman were often unable to attend sessions for other reasons. This often left the band in the position of having to record in altered forms. A notable instance was the recording of one of Richards' most famous songs, Happy. Recorded in the basement, Richards said in 1982, "'Happy' was something I did because I was for one time early for a session. There was Bobby Keys and Jimmy Miller. We had nothing to do and had suddenly picked up the guitar and played this riff. So we cut it and it's the record, it's the same. We cut the original track with a baritone sax, a guitar and Jimmy Miller on drums. And the rest of it is built up over that track. It was just an afternoon jam that everybody said, 'Wow, yeah, work on it'."

Working with a mobile recording studio, the loose and unorganised sessions went on for hours into the night, with personnel varying greatly from day to day. The recording was completed with overdub sessions at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and included additional musicians such as pianist Nicky Hopkins, saxophonist Bobby Keys, drummer Jimmy Miller and horn player Jim Price. The resulting music was rooted in blues, rock and roll, swing, country and gospel, while the lyrics explored themes related to hedonism, sex and time. These newly recorded tracks were combined with some tracks recorded at earlier sessions from 1969–1971, resulting in the Stones' first double album.

The album was originally met with mixed reviews before a positive critical reassessment during the 1970s. It has since been viewed by many critics as the Rolling Stones' best work and a culmination of a string of the band's highly critically successful albums, following the releases of Beggars Banquet (1968) (link below), Let It Bleed (1969) and Sticky Fingers (1971) (link below). Rolling Stone has ranked Exile on Main St. number 7 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003 and 2012, and dropping to number 14 in the 2020 edition, the highest Rolling Stones album ranked on the list. In 2012, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the band's fourth album to be inducted.
