On March 1, 1968,
fifty years ago today,
were married.
Johnny Cash met singer
June Carter, of the
Carter Family, backstage at the
Grand Ole Opry
while on tour and the two became lovers. In 1968, 13 years after they
first met, Johnny proposed to June during a live performance in
London, Ontario. How romantic is THAT?! There is a scene depicting the proposal in the film,
Walk the Line, which featured
Joaquin Phoenix and
Reese Witherspoon as the couple (
link below). They married on March 1, 1968, in
Franklin, Kentucky.
"Carl Perkins' songs personified the rockabilly era, and Carl Perkins' sound personifies the
rockabilly sound more so than anybody involved in it, because he never changed."
Perkins's songs were recorded by artists (and friends) as influential as
Elvis Presley, the
Beatles,
Jimi Hendrix, and
Johnny Cash, which further established his place in the history of popular music.
Paul McCartney claimed that "if there were no Carl Perkins, there would be no Beatles."
June died in
Nashville,
Tennessee, on May 15, 2003, at 73 years old, of
complications following heart-valve replacement surgery, in the company
of her family and her husband of 35 years, Johnny Cash. Johnny died four months after June's death.
