Fifty-three years ago today, on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1969, Jimi Hendrix introduced his group Band of Gypsies at a show at the Fillmore East in New York. Parts of that show and the following show on January 1 were recorded and later released as this live album, Band of Gypsys.

It the first and only album without his original group, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and featured Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums. Some of the songs represent a change in Hendrix's music from his Experience repertoire and became the basis of funk rock. Band of Gypsies contains previously unreleased songs and was the last full-length Hendrix album released before his death.

According to Sean Westergaard of AllMusic, Band of Gypsies is one of the best live albums of all time and an important recording for Hendrix.

Sputnikmusic's Hernan M. Campbell believed Machine Gun is one of Hendrix's most captivating performances. Miles Davis commented about the song that "Jimi liked what I had done with Kind of Blue and some other stuff and wanted to add more jazz elements to what he was doing. He liked the way Coltrane played with all those sheets of sound, and played his guitar in a similar way. Machine Gun is as much about the late 1960s American race riots as the war in Vietnam. Guitarist Vernon Reid describes it as "like a movie about war without the visuals. In many commentaries about Band of Gypsies, Machine Gun is singled out as the highlight of the album.

What a way to end the year!

On April 22, 1966, The Troggs released their single, Wild Thing and it landed like a lead balloon! Sometimes things need a little getting used to.

But it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart in 1966. Their version of the song was ranked at number 257 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Wild Thing was written by American songwriter Chip Taylor and popularized by The Troggs. The first studio version was recorded by the The Wild Ones, a band based in New York. They had contacted composer Taylor to ask him to write a song for them to release as a single. He composed it very quickly: within a couple of minutes, he had the chorus and a "sexual-kind-of-feeling song" emerged. On his demo version, Taylor banged on a tambourine while producer Ron Johnson "was doing this little thing with his hands", as Taylor related it. The result sounded "cool". Producer Gerry Granahan approved the song and then produced the Wild Ones' recording, with vocals by Chuck Alden. However, on its release in November 1965, the record failed to sell, and Alden later said that he regretted not performing the song in the same way as Taylor's demo. The solo in the middle of the song was performed by the recording engineer using his hands as a whistle. This sound was subsequently imitated by The Troggs in their version using an ocarina.

The Troggs were introduced to the song by their manager Larry Page, and they considered it "so weird and unusual that we just had to record it"

It was ultimately covered by many groups including The Jimi Hendrix Experience; they gave a performance of the song, at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967; in the documentary Monterey Pop, Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire at the song's conclusion (link below).

Wild Thing

Wild thing
You make my heart sing
You make everything groovy
Wild thing

Wild thing, I think I love you
But I wanna know for sure
So come on and hold me tight
I love you

Wild thing
You make my heart sing
You make everything groovy
Wild thing

Wild thing, I think you move me
But I wanna know for sure
So come on and hold me tight
You move me

Wild thing
You make my heart sing
You make everything groovy
Wild thing

Come on, come on, wild thing
Shake it, shake it, wild thing

I Got Lovin' If You Want It is one of my top songs from this album; it moves like a train out of control and it's got some great guitar work by Richard Moore.
