Born Virginia Wynette Pugh on May 5, 1942, she was known professionally by her
stage name,
Tammy Wynett. She was called the "First Lady of Country Music".
Her best-known song,
Stand by Your Man, was released in September of 1968. It is one of the best-selling hit singles by a woman in the history of country music. Who will ever forget the heart rending lyrics and emotional delivery of the song by her. It hit #1 on the Country charts and #19 on the
Billboard pop charts. At the time, however, it was criticized by the feminist when the women's rights movement was beginning to stir in the U.S. It reached number one in the
UK when the record was finally released in Britain in May of 1975. It was her only
top 40 hit. The song became one of the top standards for performing
drag queens.
D-I-V-O-R-C-E was written and recorded in 1968; it was released in may of that year. It was a number one country hit. The lyrics begin with the parenting trick of spelling out words they hope their young children will not understand, they
(the children) being not yet able to spell or comprehend the word's
meaning, in order to shield the child from the cruel, harsh reality of
the ultimate breakup of it's mother and father. She went through five marriages.
She was married to country music singer
George Jones in 1969 but they were divorced in 1975. Tammy died on April 6, 1998.
