Berkeley Art Museum ~ Barbara Chase-Riboud - The Malcolm X Steles

An outstanding exhibition by Barbara Chase-Riboud, entitled, The Malcolm X Steles, is showing at the Berkeley Art Museum until Sunday, April 27, 2014. The exhibition was originally presented by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it was sponsored by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The Steles (a stone or wooden slab erected as a monument, often for funerary or commemorative purposes) were created in homage to the human rights activist, Malcolm X.

Barbara Chase-Riboud was born on June 26, 1939. She is an internationally acclaimed visual artist, award-winning poet and bestselling novelist. She attained international recognition with her first novel, Sally Hemings, in 1979. Her iconic Malcolm X steles was created between 1969-2008.

Her incredibly beautiful sculptures are silk and bronze dreams that undulate and flow without even moving.
